It's Not A Question Of Facts, But Perceptions, Says CBSNews.com's Dick Meyer
- the earth will flush itself of all the trash humans put it through, including our species,we concern ourselves too much when the earth has the ability to rejunivate itself on its own mind you.may not be in our lifetimes but it will happen.an inconsistent truth is scary indeed, but I think about species eradicated everyday because of our selfish needs.ride a bike for christ's sake, sell that *** SUV...

- I think the problem is really Global Darkening. You see, the true cause of global warming is we used too many dark colors on our roofs, asphalt is black - we should use concrete. We have too many dark-colored automobiles. We should abolish all colors except yellow, white, pink and chartreuse. People with dark hair should be bleached and it should be against the law to tan the skin. Those people with dark skin tones would have to given pigment-reducing drugs. I realize that the evil sunglasses industry would receive a windfall-profit from this. We could tax them at 90% to keep them in line. Please help stop Global Darkening! What's new this year is the "little white dress"
If you think that's absurd then watch Al Gore's "An Inconsistent Truth"

- Children are more sensitive than adults; they are the ones suffering the consequences in the years to come.
And as an adult, I was educated that these changes needed to happen years ago, or we would be discussing them in the future, and what are we doing now?
By dumping trash and tires into the ocean is doing what to it? Not properly disposing our trash is doing what to the landfills? And by pure laziness of those throwing trash out their car windows such as plastic, beer cans, newspapers and cigarette buds is doing what to the ground?
Pray ethics is place back into our thinking of our selfish society, and hatred seizes because it%u2019s destroying the Peace and Joy each of us should be feeling, on this earth something Free to all of us.

- When the exploration and search for water on Mars was the buzz, there was a science article circulating that discussed the inhabitable zone that circled the sun. This is a radial orbit zone that encompasses a region where life could be supported on planets whose orbit lies within that zone. The article went on to explain that planets experience orbital decay, which means that as time goes on, the distance between a planet and its sun will shrink. The article also mentioned that millions of years ago Venus and the Earth were within that zone, Venus at the inner edge and the Earth at the outer edge. Now, Venus is no longer in the zone, the Earth has moved closer to the middle of the zone and Mars is approaching the outer edge of the zone. If location within this zone is critical to conditions necessary to support life, doesn't it make sense that global climate (i.e. global temps) will definitely be impacted by a decaying orbit over hundreds and thousands of years? Man may have some impact but not nearly as much as natural conditions and phenomena.

- A new report from the Union of Concerned Scientists offers the most comprehensive documentation to date of how ExxonMobil has adopted the tobacco industry's disinformation tactics, as well as some of the same organizations and personnel, to cloud the scientific understanding of climate change and delay action on the issue. According to the report, ExxonMobil has funneled nearly $16 million between 1998 and 2005 to a network of 43 advocacy organizations that seek to confuse the public on global warming science.

- The media should be ashamed of themselves. They are going around spreading mass panic on the THEORY of global warming and scaring the bejesus out of the children from this BS.
Drudge Report Article today.
Global warming concerns are keeping children awake at night. Half of young children are anxious about the effects of global warming, often losing sleep because of their concern, according to a new report today. A survey of 1,150 youngsters aged between seven and 11 found that one in four blamed politicians for the problems of climate change. - Reply to this comment
- OK ice is melting, people are only hard wired to see danger right now, Government and Media only tell us what they want us to know, our industrial pollution and greedy use of CO and CO2 emitting vehicles are the direct cause of global warming?
I have to assume that when a Chinese naval squadron sailed around the Artic in 1421 and found little ice it must have been because they were using coal powered water craft for the previous 500 years which obviously heated the planet enough to melt all the ice that is currently there. The Romans were growing figs in the UK and ancient Vikings were farming Greenland (which is now under permafrost); I can only assume they were all using Massey Ferguson tractors and combines in order to emit enough greenhouse gasses during their brief moment in time. The world climate cycles and is caused by greater forces than mankind. In 1000 years we will be told by our Government and Media to go outside and start as many fires as possible to heat up the planet because things are getting icy. - Reply to this comment
- "Of course the climate is changing, it always has and always will change. As someone quoted on here yesterday regarding the experts, 'Educated beyond their intelligence' It's all a scam to hike up air fares and gas, just another stealth tax on the way. Forget it !!"

You must be joking.
No sane person would ever say that global warming is "a scam to hike up air fares and gas."
Unless that person had the proof? So, where is yours? Or are you too 'educated beyond [your] intelligence' to tell us? - Reply to this comment

Ahhh, it is so great when someone makes an intelligent comment and actually knows what they are talking about. (unlike your comment OlGreyGhost) Anyways pixelslinger, your last paragraph couldn't be more true! - Reply to this comment
- You have to be able to visualize the threat for it to be real. If you can't understand the ramifications of a change in climate than it's not important to you.
Those people in charge of our government capable of eliciting and directing change don't have the intellectual capacity to understand the dire warnings of the VAST majority of scientists involved in studying climate change. Instead they hide their heads in the sand and hope it will all go away.
Those of you who voted for the present Regime because "he's the kind of guy I could have a beer with" rather than the other guy who was "an intellectual elite", I can only hope that when the floods come and wash your children into the gulf that you see the light right before the cold waters close over your heads. - Reply to this comment
- I agree totally - this is good Meyer writing.
I used to think people commonly formed opinions based on what they read or heard, but now I know they actually choose the sources that will give them more of what they already believe.
This is also very, very true about political opinions, too. I have heard many spout science this and science that, but the same person didn't actually know much about science when questioned.
Wait until someone makes a strong statement about something political, like Bush is a liar, or the gov't is reading all your Emails, etc. Then ask them how they know this. Regardless of whether it is true or not, what you invariably find is that they are harboring a resentment, an anger of some kind, and when they heard something that fueled it, they latched hold of the item and then merely repeated it and repeated it until they felt validated. Not good. Seems more like hysteria. - Reply to this comment
- At last a subject I'm published in.
Unfortunately, the assessment is just about accurate. It is nearly undisputed in the climatological or meteorological realms that GW is real, it is having an amplified affect (like compound interest) in recent decades, it 'is' somewhat reversable, and it is causing wild variences in weather models.
And while these things are incredibly real, and the dangers are self-evident (i.e. 7 degree annual temperature average in the Arctic Circle, something that normally takes hundreds of years), it is easier for the current realm of man not to notice or care much because GW isn't going to be the problem that makes you late for work tomorrow morning.
No, unfortunately, this generation of man, possibly through no fault of his own, is far too stupid as a collective to act ethically, and won't be around to see the consequences of their actions when the stuff really does hit the fan. 130 degree heat in Chicago Junes are too much of a dream, another life, to concern us 'now'.
It's not a Republican thing or a Democrat thing. It's a people thing. More specifically, it's an American thing. American's are way too self-righteous, selfish, and ill-responsive to anything that may infringe upon their sense of self-entitlement to realize or care. China is no better. - Reply to this comment

- Well I don't buy Meyer's Psychology. The adherents to GW religion are motivated by the desire for control; by them of course, you don't need esoteric explanations. There's too many 800 pound gorillas in the GW scene. Mann's "hockey stick" graph is NOT global; a Northern Hemisphere anomaly. (says so on the original graph, even then it shows no hint of verifiable facts; the Little Ice Age (LIA) and the Mediaeval Warm Period (MWP).
Then there's the problem with measurement of the atmospheric temperature over 70% of the earth's surface; the oceans. Prior to about 1980 they measured the temperature of the sea water; often retrieved by bucket off a ship from some arbitrary depth. That changed in 2001 when the results of about 20 years of simultaneous measurements of water and air temperatures from oceanic buoys, proved that the air temperature and the water temperature are not correlated. Translation; prior to 1980 we don't know what the air temperature was for 70% of the earth's surface. Corals grow in water; not air, so forget that proxy for air temperature.
So we don't know what the global mean temperature was before about 1980, and our accurate CO2 measurements go back to about 1958.
So if you want to believe we are one degree warmer than we were 100 years ago; when the temperature on earth can range over 265 deg F on the same day, be my guest.
The experts now say we can't do anything about it anyway; which doesn't gybe with we are doing it. - Reply to this comment
- And by the way, I actually have read more. Lots more. I have read everything available on this subject for the past 15 years, and have a solid understanding of the science involved.
That is why I am not posting hairbrained ideas like you are :) - Reply to this comment

- triassic Why is it so hard to grasp that there are also other causes for our problem and you have obviously not read more than what the media is telling us on the subject so that is your opinion which has been taken from the media push on global warming and a portion of scientists, and I have my opinion taken on what I read from many scientists who do not have an alternative agenda.....can you tell me what caused the ice ages, or what caused the last heating of the earth...
Yes there is definitely a change in the weather, and whether it will keep going and get worse or whether in a couple of years our climate will switch back, just like we have seen since the 1940's, or get much colder no one knows as there are other causes other than CO2's for climate change which the media does not talk about, thus my posts which I suggest you go back and read again...
There is also another cause as I have said before, the sun is also heating up. Mars may be in the midst of a period of profound climate change, according to a new study that shows dramatic year-to-year losses of snow at the south pole, and it is melting away at an alarming rate.
..plus..To determine the Sun's role in global warming, Dr Solanki's research team measured magnetic zones on the Sun's surface known as sunspots, which are believed to intensify the Sun's energy output. - Reply to this comment

- I have read that With global warming, greenhouse gasbags can argue that auto emissions in Ohio threaten people in Paris, and that only global government can tackle such problems.
National sovereignty? Democracy? Forget it: global warming has now brought the Left closer to global government, statism, and the eradication of individual rights than it has ever been before. - Reply to this comment
