Schieffer: "Excuse me, but when has the President ever had good relations with Congress?"

Are you kidding? He had a rubber-stamp Congress for years. Note that he did not seriously push this legislation during that time. All he did was give it lip service. For all his rhetoric, it doesn't appear that he really wants this to pass. He just wants to pander to the immigrants' vote.

I am considered liberal in a lot of circles! But, I don't like this immigration law in the slightest! It reeks of another Amnesty deal. Which we all know isn't going to work. This article is as wet as most Mexican's who have crossed the Rio Grande river! I don't know of one person who is for it! Most American's see the beginning of the end with this 'guest worker program'! It's only designed to destroy what's left of middle class America. So, I think this article is pure Bush propaganda.

If this is not a big lie I don't know what is. CBS is so wrong, it makes me sick.

I'm a hispanic American. I have one question. First of all. Whats wrong with everybody??? I know these illegal immigrants want a better life; who doesn't? We seem to have lost sight that this is America with its laws and rules. These people knowingly broke the law. The former administration did very little about the problem if anything, and now this administration is stuck with the mess. It has gone on unattended too long and now its a big problem. While these people want amnesty, we Americans (hispanic or otherwise), are getting slapped in the face! They should be tried for back taxes that they owe; they broke the laws of this country, so either send them back, make them pay fines, or put them in jail for it. Come on!!! How about all the thieves and robbers that snuck across? Are they getting 'amnesty' too? Are the 'leaders' of this country going around with blinders on their eyes, or have we elected the wrong people? AMNESTY??? WHAT A JOKE! WHAT AN INSULT!!!

The problem with CBS news is that it is owned by a corporate giant and it isn't in tune with what the "center" wants. I don't talk to any average, run-of-the-mill American who is for a byzantine, uneforceable, amnesty-for-illegal-squatters piece of legislation. Only Bob Schieffer seems to think so.

Americans want to see our laws enforced. The federal government for years has turned a blind eye to immigration and migrant employment violations. Without absolute control of our borders, all the new legal illegals will be replaced by the NEXT batch of illegals who will work for less, living lives of servitude, almost like slavery. We aren't a Nation and we don't need congress or a federal government, if neither will work to protect our borders. There's nothing to demonstrate any intention of border enforcement given the federal government's dismal record. Finally, the fact that Ted Kennedy is a major author of the bill should indicate how ridiculous it is. He was a major contributor to both the 1965 Bill and the 1986 AMNESTY bill.

There is no "liberal mainstream media". All of our mainstream media is neither liberal nor conservative, it is CORPORATE. All of it is driven only by corporate interests.

This tactic that Bob Schieffer is using has been proven to work especially by the GOP and Faux News: repeat a lie enough times and people will believe it. It saddens me that Schieffer has stooped to that level, I previously had respect for him as an actual journalist.

Great comments guys...A few more points you could make about the Immigration/Amnesty bill are: 1. The United States had very few social programs with our past mass immigrations. No matter how it's spun, this bill will be a vast net loss in taxes in the long run. 2. Possibly as a result of our social programs, a portion of these "immigrants" are not motivated to learn English or assimilate. Do we want a "Quebec" in our southern states? 3. With "chain" immigration, the percent of immigrants to the general population could be greater than any mass immigration in our past. Do we want to risk importing the failed Latin America culture/politics?
