Re: "...keep the housekeeper, but use her every other week instead of every week."

What a clueless, selfish, elitist. This reminds me of something that Katie Couric might say.

These are the kind of folks that stand to suffer the most from our pending painful economic contraction, and deservedly so.

lol, Sam, I know, as I get somewhat older I''ve become much more frugal, but it''s easy for me alone. I have started using coupons also, and I find myself spending a little on one piece of quality clothing, rather than a bunch of cheap stuff to be thrown away next season. And I tend to pick a good quality product, save for it, and then do my best to care for it and make it last longer.

I also have a daughter who has three children that can stretch a dollar like you wouldn''t believe. But she doesn''t spend a lot of money on kids clothes, because they grow out of them so fast, and you just wind up giving them away. I''ve taught her also to pick a good product and save for it, rather than to rush down with a credit card and pay a lot of interest on money that you didn''t have in the first place. I''m beginning to think that''s really the key. So much of our money is wasted paying interest.

We need to learn to live on our incomes and to make our dollars count for something.

A little wonky secret of mine is that I detest silk flowers, rofl! What a useless bunch of krap! When you can pinch of a bit of a plant, grow it and have the real thing! But I realize that''s just me.

You must live in the middle of North Dakota if you think you can find a 1-bedroom apartment to rent for $300.

Spend Less And Still Live Well

The corporate elites are sending a message to societies peeons. Spend less because soon you will have less to spend.

"Have a clear, single purpose guiding you

I would say buying food and putting a roof over your children''''s head is about as single purpose as you can get. Plus buying gas at $3.00 a gallon to get to work.

But hey, let''''s all go buy sweaters at Macy''s!"

LOL Rowdy :D

These ''tips'' are like cost-cutters for the upper-class who bought into the idea that they were going to get rich quick investing in the real-estate boom. Safari fund? Splurge on cashmere and dry cleaning? Buy just two $3 latte''s a week rather than five? ''Skimp'' on face creams?

These suggestions must be worth about $6000 a year. The coffee alone is over $1000. You can make high quality coffee at home for about $5/month.

$5000 invested in XOM three years ago would already be worth $9000.

Also, I hardly ever see people use coupons except for me. Some places like Cala-Bell double coupons. Walmart and Rite-aid have cosmetics and hair colour half-price all the time, and also have generous rebates on necessities - deododorant, toothbrushes, shampoo, etc.

It hardly takes any effort to save this kind of money, just a little planning and organization. And most people actually seem impressed to hear how much money I save rather than judging me negatively for it.

Living simply is great advice and the key to happiness. The government could use this advice best of all. US government spending has increased 75% in the last 7 years.

As for the comments from prairiefox1, all I can say is that you are clueless. What exactly is exorbitant rent and high interest rates? Apparently you think landlords got their properties for free. You must also be assuming that those with high interest rates have good credit. Probably not. In any event, everyon has the ability to say no to bad offers.

I PURCHASED LAND IN 1995 AND PUT A MOBILE HOME ON IT! I LIVE 10 MILES FROM TOWN! MY TOTAL INDEBTEDNESS IS $1100 AT O INTEREST! I PUT AWAY SAVINGS EVERY MONTH! AND I LIVE ONLY ON SOCIAL SECURITY!
I LIVE VERY COMFORTABLY AND EAT WELL!
I KNOW HOW TO MANAGE MONEY AND I HAVE PROVEN SO!
I HAVE NOTICED RENT RUNNING CLOSE TO A THOUSAND DOLLARS A MONTH FOR SOMETHING THAT SHOULDN''T BE FOR MORE THAN THREE HUNDRED! JUDGING FROM YOUR RESPONSE YOU MUST BE A LANDLORD!
