WANNA BET.?????

Obama and Congress have been avoiding every issue that reflects badly on them or that will improve or solve the crises here in the US since January 1,2009.

What ever makes you think anything will change now.?

The more calls for misdirected gun control laws and bans on specific types of firearms, the more stimulus is being provided for individuals to go out and purchase numerous firearms, in particular the specific firearms targeted for ban, and the more ammunition will be stockpiled.

Those calling for such bans and controls are creating the demand. If they want to begin to "solve" the problem of random shootings and mass murder, the place to start - the hard and difficult mechanism to do so - is with a way to identify those who pose a threat to society instead of knee-jerk "solutions" that don't provide a solution to anything.

Now it turns out that the "tactical vest" Holmes was wearing was not a bullet proof vest at all, just lots of pockets for magazines. This means that had there been a courageous armed citizen in the theater, there is a good chance that this killer could have been stopped.

bmallen, while I agree that this is an example of how gun control laws only ensure that law abiding citizens are unarmed when the chips go down, it's a fact that in a tactical situation, unless you are trained for it, the casual gun owner is more apt to shoot themself or an innocent bystander than their intended target, if they can even see the target, take aim and hit a moving target, off balance, in the dark, with their night vision blown by exploding incendiary devices, in the midst of a screaming, panicked mob. All this after they have correctly processed the situation, located the target, flipped off the safety, moved within striking distance and verified a clear field of fire behind the target. Of course to do so they would have to jump over some rows of seats and several bodies - some living and some not, slip on some diet coke and JuJubees, and remain unaffected by the horror of the situation. And of course, unmindful of the immediate danger to their loved ones cowering nearby and probably being shot at (what percentage of those people were there not alone but with a friend or family member?).

Considering that scenario, are they more likely to shoot themself in the leg or take out the target? For this reason, I don't see the "what if more people were armed" argument as a particularly compelling one.

if obama can publicly declare approval of same sex marriages, publicly announce stopping deportations of illegals why can't obama, right now, announce his support for the ban on assault weapons? find it odd that obama is so silent on the issue of assault weapons. where does he really stand on the issue of assault weapons? we know how he feels about same sex marriages and illegals neither of which are issues up before congress to any degree.

When you can legislate the evil out of peoples hearts or as someone else commented eliminate mental illness in humans please let us know. Any person with a malevolent desire to kill doesn't necessarily need a firearm to achieve their goal. My opinion is that if denied access to guns and ammunition a person bent on killing a large number of people would not be deterred but simply challenged to find the means to carry out their plan. The defect in the human psyche of the mass killer is something no one will ever be able to mitigate. You can use legislative actions to make yourself feel better but you are only fooling yourself.

Gun rights, like Social Security and Medicare, is a third rail of politics, and neither Congress or the president are going to lay a finger on it. The number of guns owned by individuals in the US is put at somewhere around 100 million. Even if someone wanted to somehow control them, it would be an impossible task. For better or worse, we are pretty much stuck with things they way they are. The good news is that your chances of being shot by a looney is far less than your chance of being killed by a texting driver.

As passed by the Congress:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
As ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State:
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

OK, were in the second amendment does it say that assault weapons cannot be banned?

In a split second...5 died from an idiot running a 2 red lights. Where's the 12,000 media stories covering this?

(AP) - 50 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) An SUV smashed into a concrete pillar and flipped over before bursting into flames early Sunday, killing three women and two children and reducing the vehicle to a mangled mess.

The driver, along with another adult and a child inside the vehicle, were hospitalized.

The 2008 Mercedes Benz SUV was traveling east on Atlantic Avenue in the New York borough of Queens around 3:15 a.m. when it hit a pillar supporting the AirTrain to John F. Kennedy International Airport, authorities said.

The vehicle was speeding and blew through two red lights, police and witnesses told the Daily News.
