Comments on: Colo. Rep.: Congress can't avoid gun issue

- I'm a gun rights person who believes in reasonable restrictions on gun ownership based on logic! The Second Amendment supports gun ownership, but not the quantity, type, or by certain people: even the SCOTUS finding recognized the possibility of restrictions.

- First of all, nobody is talking about taking guns from people, stop with the alarmism! What the American people are asking is: how can we devise a system that could help prevent senseless atrocities like the one in Aurora, Columbine, Virginia Tech, and many others. The question now is, should the NRA, a group composed of only 0.005 percent of the US population, sense of entitlement continue to be bigger than the sorrow caused in our communities by assault weapons and the indiscriminate and unregulated sale of ammo? Not if we believe and act on what is right for the majority of people in this country.

- A total ban on assault weapons is perfectly reasonable. Only the rabid NRA and its rabid members defend the right for people to own assault weapons. Could a gun rights person give me ONE good reason why someone, other than the police and military, should own an assault weapon?

- This could have been avoided or minimized had Colorado not made their ccw laws with such a stupid restriction to law abiding ccw holders. If there had been some ccw people there the gunman wouldn't have been able to kill and injure so many people. The type of gun is NOT the issue. Guns are a tool, in the hands of law abiding citizens, they are no threat. In the hands of bad guys, they are a very grave threat. Gun control isn't the issue. Gun Free Zones make any area so designated as open season on innocent people.

- I have, just now, written to Congressman Perlmutter pledging my support for this initiative. I have also written to my own Congressman as well as two Senators, asking them to join with him on this issue.
No citizen NEEDS to own assault rifles with 100-round clips. - Reply to this comment
- Sorry. I am not willing to give up my rights under the US Constitution because someone committed a despicable act. If you are that afraid of those who exercise their rights as Americans then move somewhere where everything is banned and the government will take care of you from cradle to grave. And no whining about your lack of freedom either. You willingly gave it up.

- The assault weapon ban should be a no brainer. The problem is the tea party , right wing republicans have no brains.

- The repubs are banking on the fact that most folks have very short memories and the NRA is hoping that this "incident" will blow over in a short while. Then the dummies will vote for whomever they think will protect their gun rights!

- Some things to keep in mind, while all of the talking heads proceed to jabber:
Though Colorado allows concealed carry, the movie theater is just one of several such places that do not allow permit holders to bring in their firearms. There has yet to be any reporting on how many CCW permit holders were in the audience when the shooting occurred. That is the elephant in this room, people made prey by the law.
When considering policy and legislation with regards to weaponry, one thing needs to be kept in mind: Assume the bad guys can get guns. Buy them from the black market, borrow from a friend, steal from a house, be the person you thought was the good guy. If violence and murder are intended, the legality of any lesser act is probably irrelevant to them.
The police cannot be everywhere, so in order to prevent these sort of events from running away you need to create a system that empowers citizens that understand and are willing to accept the responsibility that comes with concealed carry. Being willing to invest the time to practice and maintain a level of skill, courage to face the fact that they may have to use deadly force in the defense of themselves and others, that others may be forced to use it on them, and the discretion to know when it's time to act. - Reply to this comment
- What non-sense! By your logic, America, the only country with as many guns as it has citizens, should be the safest, right? Well, is it?
