Senate Majority Leader Says He Tried To Move Forward, Wants Troops To Come Home
- No he didn't. You are very right. What those polls are finding is that there are a few democrats out there willing to answer the phone, and say they aren't happy that Congress hasn't gotten us out of this terrible mess. And they are finding republicans who will say anything about congress since it's in the democratic majority now. The low congress approval is basically because Bush won't work with Congress and we aren't able to get much done.

- mudrose,
Congress cut funding to Saigon after 12 long years of full funding and 5 years after Nixon was elceted on the promise of ending the war( remember the "I have a plan" soundbite?).
If Saigon couldn't stand on its own feet after 12 years it was because it was too corrupt to do so.
The south was bound to fall one way or another and most historians agree that the turning point was the Tet Offensive which occurred 6 years before the funding was cut. The funding was still at 700 million per year after being cut and this was during a ceasefire.
We continued to allow our service personnel to die for years after the cause was lost becuase Nixon was searching for the elusive "peace with honor".
Rather than a phased and orderly withdrawal, we neded up with peace with an abrupt retreat.
Hopefully, we will be smarter this time and accept the fact that this ill-timed and planned occupation was doomed to failure from the beginning and will never succeed because too many Iraqis don't want us there.
I pray that the inevitable drawdown will be better planned and executed than the occupation. - Reply to this comment

Iraq pullout plan a rare wartime rebuke
The passage of the legislation in many ways surpasses congressional efforts to end the Vietnam War, a longer and far deadlier war for U.S. forces. Congress went years before it was able to agree on legislation significantly challenging presidential war policy, holding some 94 roll call votes on the war between 1966 and 1972, according to data provided by the Senate Historian office.

viet nam
In sum, Congress played a very important role in building opposition to an unpopular and failed Cold War intervention. Legislators emerged as major voices of skepticism, criticism, and outright opposition to Vietnam. They checked the hawks in the administration who refused to believe the facts on the ground. Congress was ultimately pivotal to placing pressure on the Nixon administration

The last American troops left Vietnam on 29 March 1973.
The following year there were frequent violations of the peace treaty.

- The president's very favorable number is more than 5 times that of Harry Reid at 16% versus 4%.
So that shows that liberals can be critical of their own leadership. If only you cared to scrutinize your beloved leaders only a slight bit, your eyes may open up and you would see all that is wrong in America. What's wrong is there are two people sitting on this forum all day, trying to make fun of others and bash Clinton in the name of fascism. And hey, 16 divided by 4 is not 5.... I won't trust stats from someone who doesn't know math and will just spit forth whatever a republican buddy told them. - Reply to this comment

- I love these Republicans. They constantly remind themselves that Congress' approval rating is much lower than even Dumbyas.
The point they miss is this. We're frustrated with Congress because they havn't been able to muster the votes to end the fiasco in Iraq.
And, we blame the Republican obstructionists. Believe me, come Nov. 08', when we're kicking the bums out, it won't be the democrats bums getting the kicking! - Reply to this comment
- Well, Lincoln was mentally ill. You ever notice that? That the people who have the calling to lead always seem to be the ones who are sick in the head?

He still roams the White House. I think he's telling George what to do. Unfortunately, Clinton didn't listen. He was a Rhodes Scholar thought he knew better. - Reply to this comment
- I'm writing a porno story about a politician, is the reason why I bring this stuff up. A rather dark tale of power and corruption in a democracy. But I'm calling it "History's Mental Disease". The theme being, see.. that all the leaders of the world are sick. Wanting to be leaders of the world..
