Whether It's Now Or In The Fall, Both Sides In Congress Say Conditions Must Change
- to tbweb,
Allow me to posit an alternate scenario to yours;
After the Shia gain power, they cordon themselves into a Shiite nation, or join Iran, as they know that messing with the Sunnis will bring down the wrath of the vast majority of world Muslims (like 85%), the Sunni. Saudi Arabia will be supported be the oilholes in the US, as they know that 12% to 15% of the money currently in the US belongs to the Saudis, so the Shia will have to form their own country, and give up all thoughts of antagonizing the Sunni.
They will issue calls for the destruction of Israel, but they will be only calls and the occasional token act, they also know that Israel has nukes, and is only waiting for the smallest excuse to use them. The Saudis will not be with them on this, the Saudis are not only too close, but they know that Israel also exerts a disproportionately large influence on the US.
The situation will stabilize itself, we are only delaying it, at our own cost. - Reply to this comment

Here is an alternate scenario to yours
After the Shia gain power, they cordon themselves into a Shiite nation, as they know that messing with the Sunnis will bring down the wrath of the vast majority of world Muslims, the Sunni. Saudi Arabia will be supported be the warmongers in the US, as they know that 12% to 15% of the money currently in the US belongs to the Saudis, so the Shia will have to form their own country, and give up all thoughts of antagonizing the Sunni.
They will issue calls for the destruction of Israel, but they will be only calls and the occasional token act, they also know that Israel has nukes, and is only waiting for the smallest excuse to use them. I know I repeat myself, but I also believe that the US politicians really don't care one bit about the socio-political upheaval you described.
They preach about human rights, while kidnapping, murdering, and torturing innocents, because they object to our bombing them.
They encouraged the mass media to stir up the "kill all the Muslims" sentiment you see in many posts here, and use it as a scare tactic to excuse furthering their crimes.
The Democrats decry it all, but do nothing to at least demand accountability, let alone to end it, as they were elected to do.
For these and many other reasons, I believe there is absolutely no humane consideration in their thinking.
And what did Iran ever do to us, other than overthrow our puppet, that so many want to kick their a**es? - Reply to this comment
- to tbweb,
It is going to happen anyway.
When the US blew what little stability was left, by lynching Saddam, they opened the barn doors, so to speak. The inevitable resulting power struggle is impossible to contain, or control, and those who have such designs as you suggest have only to wait, we cannot afford to be there forever.
We are only wasting time, lives, and treasury assets, trying to repeat the same hubris that gave us our other shameful debacle, Vietnam.
Our task now should be to end our dependence on oil as our primary energy source, prepare our military to repel attacks against our real physical borders, repair our own economy, and let the Middle East become whatever it is destined to become.
We fooled ourselves thinking we could reshape the region after WWII, our artificial countries could not reshape the cultures contained within, with the traditional rivalries.
Let bush say "I told you so" all he wants, while on his way to the firing squad, I consider the restoration of our country's economy, and the removal of our children from harm's way more important than losing a gainsay battle. - Reply to this comment
- "They hate us for of our freedom"?
No, they hate us for leaving troops in Saudi Arabia long after Gulf I and they hate us for overthrowing a democratically elected leader in Iran and installing the Shah.
We are not all that free, being addicted to oil. - Reply to this comment

Agreed, but how about those who brought us there under false pretexts and lies?
Something needs to change in Washington DC too starting with the White House... - Reply to this comment

I think the real reason the Democrats are not pulling the plug on funding and bringing our troops home is because that outcome is worst than what we have now. First, you hand over Iraq to Iran creating a Shia cresent in the Middle East. Next the Iraqi government will be wiped out and replaced by that extremist Cleric who only cares about Shiites and not all Iraqis. Then after they consolidate their power they go after the Sunnis bringing in the Saudis and others! Its a mess and the Democrats don't want the blame for that because it lets Bush off the hook because he will get to say I told you to leave the troops in Iraq. So more Americans must die while we wait until September which Tony Snow is already lowering expectations for and the saga continues! We are stuck in Iraq for at least as long as we are stuck in South Korea, like, forever! The worst case screnario is another distraction like a war with Iran, personally I would love to bust Irans a s s, I just don't think we are ready for that adventure and need to regroup first and get our troops off the ground and out of Irans missile range. Iran will destroy that Green Zone as soon as the first shot is fired! The sad truth is even the next President will still be stuck in Iraq. We broke it worst than what it was so now its our baby! How retarded do you have to be to say something like that? Or to think it makes any sense? - Reply to this comment

I agree with your assertion that most Americans, want out of this debacle, however, I also believe that if Congress really wanted it to end, they could easily force matters, by pulling funding, revoking the war powers they gave to Bush, (not meant to be permanent anyway) ordering Bush to recall the troops, at the same time commencing impeachment proceedings for all involved.
But something inside me says that most of them have also been bought out, or scared out, and therefore unwilling to act.
The first official words out of Ms. Pelosi's mouth should have been "impeachment proceedings will commence", instead we got " we don't want to start a "witch hunt," we will work together with the administration.
What a load of hooey, if ever we needed to "burn some witches", we need to do so now. - Reply to this comment

Ignored: Something Needs To Change In America
1. Arrest and try Bush, and all co-conspirators complicit in the illegal acts of the executive branch since 9/11.
2. Impeach, or censure any members of Congress who voted to give Bush war powers.
3. Impeach, or censure all members of the legislature who voted for the Patriot Act without reading it first
4. Court martial any and all military and secret service personnel who were participants in the human rights abuses at detention camps, and relevant circumstances.
I have more, but you get the point (I hope)... - Reply to this comment
