laurieleemoo real quik answer how about sending all of our prisoners white collar and others to Iraq.Rangel idea is only to try to bring the war closer to home,he really does not want to reinstate the draft.More bodies is not necessarily the solution. The Iraqis need to come together in pursuit of a stable countey.I do have to run as the ex is giving me hades about a gofpher that is non existent.

RadioB---Hey there! Long time no see. I must confess, I have not. I am sorry. Someday, though I swear to you...I will. So, what do you think about this draft idea. I was telling my friends here that I think we should offer the illegal mexicans a chance to fight in our military in return for citizenship. They think the idea is way out there I think...but I don't know. I'm not so sure.... I mean, I really think we could work out something with some of them and I think if we did---the american people would automatically be more accepting of them. I think we actually could kill two birds with one stone here.

laurieleemoo This is going back quite a few years I knew a German who had done his mandatory service and had the option to do a tour of the US military service which he did and then became a citizen.

laurieleemoo, I could only find one reference to illegal aliens in the military, someone was enlisting them using forged green cards and otehr data. The article (below) also talks about other cases of illegal immigrants being found. So I guess some of them do opt to go into the military. Theres' a lot of foreign nationals serving as well (almost 40,000), but those are the "legal" ones.

Decent article on the subject for ya, laurieleemoo!

pakaal---I recall the british not fighting properly also. I mean, you are not forgetting about the fact that the British burned alive a whole town of people by putting them in a church and setting it on fire. We were not fighting the kind of army back then that fought army to army. The British did actually kill civilians---so you can not just say the americans were cowards who shot from behind trees. What about the coward British who chose to fight all the women and children in america back then. Think God the British have evolved also, but there was a time they too would have actually been considered terrorists. I do not call a terrorist war exactly even handed when it comes to killing defenseless civilians.

and you know...i am still betting a lot of them would take us up on the offer. I mean we have people who do this job vountarily right now....so I could actually imagine that there are a lot of mexicans who might actually want to take us up on the offer. Or are you telling me that mexicans are not the type of people who are willing to die for their country or a country they are trying to become a part of. I'm actually betting that there are some mexicans who would be willing to take the chance---if they want it bad enough. I mean...they would have even more of a reason to fight--even more so than our volunteers in the military presently.
We have americans who are willing to do it for NOTHING in return. You do not think some of them may be willing (and some of 13 million who are here illegally could actually add up to quite a few of them).

pakaal---actually we happen to have quite a few people in our military who are not yet citizens I'm pretty sure. I mean, I would think also you would have to be a citizen already in order to join...but I'm pretty *** sure I read a specific story how one of the american soldiers who died was given an honorary citizenship after he died...so I'm not for sure...but I think you don't exactly have to be an american citizen to actually join in our military. I thought I heard there are people in our military who are not yet citizens.

laurieleemoo, it may sound good to you, but I just don't see your idea getting too far - like I said before, we don't know where the illegal aliens are anyway.

I suppose you could do some sort of "amnesty program" to try and convince them to join, in return for not being prosecuted, they could join the military. I still think that unless they gave citizenship up front, they couldn't join anyway, though.

"If the insurgents put on some uniforms and come out and fight, our troops can handle them in days if not hours."

Hmm, sounds like the British back when they were fighting the settlers during our war for Independence! The 'cowardly' Americans refused to line up and fight "properly" and kept shooting at the Brits from behind trees and rocks and stuff.

Ok, back to the draft, unless we have a major war with hummmmmmmm, say Red China, over Korea, I think our volunteer troops are just fine, they took on the best Afganistan and Iraq could muster and we kicked as@ in weeks.
If the insurgents put on some uniforms and come out and fight, our troops can handle them in days if not hours.
I like the idea about the Mexicans, if they need the money, we have a job in Iraq waiting for them and American citizenship too..

Yes, the Spanish American war. We fought Spain in the Philippines, Spain ceded control of a couple islands to us including Puerto Rico after their "loss" (long, convoluted story on that one, check out Wikipedia), and around the same time we decided we would invade and take control of Hawaii - that whole Manifest Destiny deal.

I don't support the draft but I do support raising the pay of those serving in the military at least to the level that civilian mercenaries are getting, providing the best heath care available for the soldiers and their family, providing education and advanced education for the soldier and their family even after the soldier has left service, and providing a pension for those that have served in a combat situation no matter how long they were in the military. The people that send them in harms way get much more than that while soldiers, firepersons and police persons get a mere pittance of what they should get for what they risk. A congress person doesn't risk that much and they get pay and benifits way beyond what they should be getting. That may encourage more to enlist.

I think all americans would be more accepting of them and at the same time it would help us in a time of war.
