funny, the democrats controlled congress for the first two years of obama's administration and didn't do diddly. they now have the stones to complain about republicans. also wasn't schumer a weiner supporter as well? bottom line, democrats haven't done much either as far as jobs, border security, ending wars, etc.

How unfortunate that the republicans are so drunk with money and power tha winning elections is all that concerns them. they will let the econmy crater if they think it will give them an advantage in the 2012 elections. Such an attitude is frought with serious problems. If they get back in power will they finish the work Bush started and bankrupt the country?

Converting to solar energy will increase employment tenfold and save tons of money in heating oil and electrical bills. The disposal money will increase and lo and behold our economy will grow again. Too many cowards out there holding on to their purse and investing in foolishness. Get real. Invest in a tangible asset that will produce your homes electrical needs.

Schumer would question whether the Pope is a believer in God.

This guy is always good for bad soundbite.

Schumer is a hypocritical sleazeball. He has been pushing for increases in business taxes until he figures out that it is not going over with the elections coming up. He wants to micromanage businesses from Washington by giving SELECTIVE tax breaks to particular companies that hire. This is exactly bass-ackwards to how business works. Businesses naturally hire when they feel confident in the health of the economy and their particular position in it. They don't hire people to get a reward from the government. He has this all screwed up.

Democrats have controlled the Senate, the House, and the Presidency until lately - they have done exactly the wrong things regarding strengthening the economy (what is needed to turn the business and unemployment mess around. With their misguided policies (increasing massive federal deficit spending by massive government expansion, when there is no money to allow it) they have created chaos in the economy, and they have left businesses with no confidence in the direction of the country. Now, he wants to attempt a bogus reward system in order to pull in a few temporary jobs right before an election. We need sound judgment from Washington, not this crap.

We need get Washington out of the business of attempting to micromanage business, when it has proved it is incompetent in managing itself. Washington needs to do exactly what Paul Ryan recommended; lower the corporate tax rates (ours are the highest in the world and it is killing job growth) and get rid of the stupid loopholes (that empower lobbyist and allow companies like GE to make a $5 billion profit in the US and pay zero taxes).

These the same Dems that refused to pass a budget in the last COngress. Schumer has a lot of nerve since everything they have tried as failed. The Dems are the party of no ideas.

I'd go further and say the republicans would like to see the economy tank. That is how cynical i have become about politics and the pervasive creed of greed that will surely destroy this country.

Shovel ready were not admitted to have never existed. Context, genius, context. The caveat was that you do not just walk onto a bridge building project, there is some setup necessary. That is not to say that workers are not needed for such projects as you are inferring.

cursie, you don't have to be a genius to know that obama sold the first stimulus on the promises of shovel-ready jobs and unemployment not exceeding 8%. And you don't have to be a genius to realize that now, after $2T has been blown, neither promise has come to fruition.
As far as obama admitting there really never were shovel ready jobs, I refer you to CBS's Stefanie Condon article...

Obama: "No Such Thing as Shovel-Ready Projects"
By Stephanie Condon

With unemployment hovering near 10 percent nearly two years after President Obama signed his economic stimulus package, Mr. Obama is acknowledging that, despite his campaign promises, "there's no such thing as shovel-ready projects...."

please explain then why the unemployment rate was so low and one might note that we must create almost 250 thousand jobs a year to even break even so job creation was occurring during most of his time in office. the current recession is not connected to the reduction in manufacturing jobs

=========================

Median house hold wage in 2009 was $49,777 and in 1975 adjusted for inflation it was $42,936.

Contrast that with the cost of housing and you will see a huge disproportionate difference given the relative stagnation of wages. Zero unemployment reached with Mcjobs is not a sustainable economy nor is it "good." So talking in simple unemployment percentages serves to confuse not contextualize.

If you are simply trying to point out lost jobs in construction and the financial sector, yes, there is a direct correlation. Bubbles distort actual economic health by creating a temporary surge in employment in bubble sectors. We have had three bubbles the last 30 years. None of this indicates there was or is a robust economy operating in our nation.
