- I always thought as a news reporter you kept your personal opinions out of your interviews, I guess that is not true when it came to your interview with Cain. You are the one who made the decision to chew tabacco and to smoke. I am sorry you developed cancer. I have to and do blame it on my own lack of taking care of me as you should. Because an ad shows someone smoking, we still have the opportunity to say no. Just like drinking, we still have the opportunity to say no.

- I thought the show was a Joke, a free ad for Cain. Oh, the big tongue lashing supposedly by Schieffer, give me a break, that was a tease if nothing else. Is this it, the big go get him we are so afraid. My didn't he just pat him on the back and give him a cookie. Lets see what came out Oh Cain is himself a cancer surviver, not to smoaking but..one strike for Cain, not ending the war, its to soon...This is for all Big Business who wants to keep the war going its Big Money for the Big Business guy, money in their pockets, just ask Cheney, hes all for keeping the war going also...strike against Cain and us little guys. WE'RE NO MAKING A DAM DIME. oops we're not supposed to are we, back to the show. so Obama and Bush are wrong we need to stay in the war and continue to give our childrens lifes away endlessly. Thats about what I got out of it and Oh yes and Mr. Schieffer kissing Cain's butt..talk about a free endorcement. we're not all on that ignorant mass bus yet....If this is all Schieffer can come up with the guy is way to old if he thinks this is 'tough reporting' this show was a joke...

- You missed asking a CRUCIAL question regarding Cain's "life begins at conception" stance. While the "rape and incest" question is important, even more important for millions and millions of women is that the "life begins at conception" stance would defacto outlaw oral contraceptives, IUDs, and morning-after pills because they prevent implantation - _after_ the egg has been fertilized. Too many Americans are ignorant about reproductive biology, and we rely on people like you to educate your viewers about the implications of various positions that affect public policy.

- Bob, I agree with the previous comments concerning the inappropriate attacks on Cain this morning. Were this not Cain, but Obama; were this not you, but say, a Fox News commentator, it would be uniformly designated by the mainstream media as patronizing, derisive, and aided by your mellifluous Southern cadence, sort of racist. I have always admired you, but perhaps it's time to go.

- I am appalled by this morning's broadcast. At the top of the show you decided to show an Internet ad posted by your guest and Republican candidate Herman Cain. That in of itself was not offensive but when you take it upon yourself to use this program to verbalize your personal opinions which have nothing to do with the basis of the show or the point of having a candidate present to discuss their agenda that's where your show no longer has credibility.
Additionally, your comments regarding whether the ad was intentionally promoting smoking were ridiculous and your continual 5 minutes worth of badgering your guest on the subject was appalling to watch. There was no point to this what so ever. In my view it is a journalist's job in the political forum to ask informed questions to clarify a candidate's position not state ones personal opinion. If I wanted to hear someones personal opinion then I can certainly tune into the Fox News or Rush Limbaugh.
Lastly, I would ask you to consider the thousands of fellow citizen's who struggle each day to quit smoking. Perpetuating the notion that all smoker's are trying to encourage others to smoke is an uninformed opinion and does nothing more than continually paint them as disgusting and vile. That's not compassionate nor acceptable and is in direct contrast to your CBS Cares program.
If you feel so strongly about the issue of smoking then I would suggest you use your position in another forum to express those opinions NOT on a political program. I expect more from CBS as a news network and as such I would expect you make a formal apology to both your guest and viewers for not adhering to higher journalist standards. - Reply to this comment
- Bob,
I have been a fan and viewer of your shows and features since I returned from the War long ago. You have always been and impartial interviewer until the Hermain Cain interview. The part of your being a cancer survivor was not impartial. You got personal about that part and it damaged being objective about the Cain commerical. Being free to smoke, drink, and do other undesirable things is a American Liberty Free choice.
Don't get me wrong I don't smoke and hate the darn things that foul the air and peoples health, but, freedom to do so is important. Likewise, Abortion, as undesireable as that is - it is a free choice. Freedom is the key word here - I fought for that and wheather I agree with what free thing you chose to do doesn't matter. If it is legal and free, it is the choice of the person.
One thing for sure, YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID and that is what you should have said. - Reply to this comment
- Mr Schieffer -- Your hypocrisy this morning was appalling. You took offense to the Herman Cain ad where the campaign manager was smoking. You stated that as a cancer survivor you were against the ad. Further you stated that you used to smoke. Well, no one made you smoke, no one made you quit. You chose to do it. Why you did is for you to know. You obviously quit, and you paid the consequences for smoking. And you were lucky. You survived. But it is not for you to sit in judgement of anyone else that smokes. If he chooses to smoke then fine. And if they show it in an ad that is lawful too. You made a choice and paid the price for it. While not as much as known about cancer when you were smoking you still knew there were risks. And to say that you are against smoking in ads and find it distasteful is hypocrisy. At some point you were doing it too.
And for the record, I am a smoker too. I am well aware of the risks and I know I have the choice to quit.
Please refrain from being a hypocrite or you will lose my respect and my viewership.
Sincerely

- I think that you gave Cain and Gingrich a pass when they characterized occupy Wallstreet protesters as anti free market and capitalism. The government gave Wallstreet and the Automakers trillions of our tax dollars because they were 'too big to fail'. I don't think that is free market or capitalistic, those businesses should have failed and their stocks should have gone to zero. Capitalism without bankrupcy is like religion without hell. When one of the 99% gets into trouble they are allowed to fail. Don't let these guys spout off about free markets and captialism when they are talking about the bailouts. BTW it was a freemarket, capatilist, republican that gave the first bailout to Wallstreet....

- Herman Cain is fundamentally wrong when he states that people at the lower end of the income scale will save money under his 9-9-9 plan. He states that they currently pay 15.3 per cent in payroll taxes so his 9 percent will save then @ 6 per cent. The fact is that employees only pay half of the 15.3 or 7.65 percent so they will in fact pay more under his 9-9-9 plan.
Self employed individuals do pay the entire 15.3 percent but then they get to deduct half it if from their income to arrive at their adjusted gross income.
His business acumen doesn't seem to extend to an understanding of payroll taxes and no interviewers ever seem to challenge the accuracy of this statement. - Reply to this comment
