It would be nice if humans could be relied upon to do the "right" thing. But in a capitalist system, based on the promise of personal reward for personal initiative, where decisions are made by independent entities rather than a centralized government bureaucracy, the primary motivation is financial. Until alternate forms of energy are as cheap or cheaper than oil -- whether that comes from oil prices rising or the costs of alternate energy falling -- oil will remain the preferred choice.

I'm not saying that that's necessarily right -- just a reality that we have to deal with, like it or not.

Lol, erichsh. I didn't vote for Obama, nor am I a liberal. My comment stands -- folks complain about big government, then are the first to complain if big government doesn't rush right in to pick up the pieces that result from government staying out of folks' business.

Make up your mind. Which way do you want it? Do you want a government big enough and pervasive enough to be totally prepared for large events, even though they're considered "unlikely"? Or do you want a small government that leaves it up to large corporations to determine and prepare for risk? Or do you just want to complain?

the obama haters are quite pitiful. one minute they are crying that the govt is too big, then the next minute they are crying for the govt to come swooping in with the immediate fix. the govt is not in the business of plugging oil leaks. legislation after the exxon valdez placed the responsibility on the oil companies to clean up their spills. the right-wingers have been crying that too many safety/environmental regulations exist, when this irresponsible accident shows that indeed too little regulation and not enough enforcement exists.

alternative and green energies are where we need to truly invest. the obama admin has already begun to invest in these and conservation through the stimulus. we own 2% of the world's oil reserves. no amount of drilling will significantly reduce our dependence on foreign oil with our current rate of consumption.

I doubt that the oil spill will help decide, I think Obama has already committed suside on a second term. All he has to do is to keep opening his mouth and he will bury himself long before 2012

I love how the "drill baby drill" Republicans try to blame this on Obama.

And if anyone thinks putting a Republican in the White House is going to fix this problem...??!!? Obama wants to use alternative energy and Republicans want more offshore drilling. You do the math.

"I ultimately take responsibility for solving this crisis - I am the President, and the buck stops with me," said Mr. Obama.

Same ol' story. So many complaints about "big" government, one that's got its fingers in everyone's pies -- but when the feathers hit the fan, these same people are screaming that government doesn't step in and take control.

Make up your minds, folks. If you want a government prepared to respond to the biggest threats at the highest possible level of preparenedness, then quit complaining about "big" government. If you don't like "big" government, then quit complaining about a government that is not fully prepared to handle the biggest threats in the most rapid and competent manner.

Some folks just like to complain.

His wife, like Hillary, wants to be the first woman president. Never forget that. She is an attorney and they all have the same scally skin with the same diamond back pattern. She will run for the first black woman president.
