While a Nation and World Paid Tribute to a Passing Singer, a Small Town Mourned a Young Soldier Killed in Afghanistan
- Thank you, thank you, thank you for you wonderful piece on Brian Bradshaw. At last someone in the news media took the time and effort to recognize the service, bravery, and sacrifice of our military people. As the parents of an Air force pilot who has just returned safely from a year in Afghanistan, we know what it is like to have the media spend hours of air time with stories about politicians, entertainers, and sports celebrities, while ignoring the real heroes of our country who every day put their lives on the line for us. Our hearts go out to Brian's family for their devastating loss.

- I saw the piece this morning and it was heart-breaking. I'm so proud there are already more than 100 comments in response. I've posted it to my Facebook page, and I, too, hope this goes viral.
God Bless all who serve us: soldiers, firemen, policemen, teachers and those who unselfishly volunteer their time to help others.
YOU are the true heroes of our country! - Reply to this comment

- To Corneliastout: Unfortunately in some school districts, the schools ARE a battleground. (Have you heard of Columbine, Va. Tech and other schools where students and teachers were gunned down and killed while trying to learn or teach?).
Teachers, like soliders, firemen, policemen, et al, are public servants who are rarely, if ever, recognized for their contributions to a civilized society.

- I agree! Please post the video so we can share it with others. The story is more poignant watching the video.

- I cried as I watched the story of Brian Bradshaw, the 24 year old solder killed in Afganistan on June 25, 2009. His service is much appreciated by our family and we share your sorrow. The sorrow was not only for his family, but also for my nephew, Private David Walter Kramer who was killed by friendly fire on the last day of the Gulf War; he turned 20 year old just 24 days prior to his passing. For a tribute to David, please click this link to his Find A Grave memorial http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Kramer&GSfn=David&GSbyrel=in&GSdyrel=in&GSst=6&GScnty=215&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=3824777&

- May God bless this family and all the other families that lost a son or daughter that are and will forever be a true Hero and Patriot. Shame on the media for not giving more coverage and tribute to the fallen soldiers. Shame on them for not reporting the good and the success stories that are happening over there. Instead, they choose to glorify people that have drug and alcohol additions, no morality or even basic commen sense. They would rather report and even misrepresent a story just to make the soliders efforts invalid. Just like when many in Congress like Sen. Harry Reid said, "We have lost." You enjoyed reporting on that, didnt you? God forbid you say anything good about our military. You wonder why no one is watching you anymore. I was dumb founded when I saw you actually let this wonderful woman's remarks actually run on your program. Must have been a fluke, for sure. You know, it makes me sick to see this President not show any respect or honor to our military. Not like he would know what honor, respect or even sacrifice means anyways. Only if a poll told him (or his teleprompter). You are a joke sir, right along with the media. All of Congress, the President and the media don't have the amount of integrity, class or honor combined, than what one soldier has on the tip of trigger finger.

- My son is serving USAF transport operations he is currently on his 8th deployment since 1997 with his 5th in the middle east. He is in convoy operations Iraq. His wife of two years is in Okinawa Japan expecting their first child in October (Found out last week it?s a girl) He may or may not make it back for the birth. It will be close. He never complains. He said "Dad I have an attitude of gratitude". I can?t help but notice that prior to the election there was story after story about ?blood for oil? or something about ?Pay back for rich Texas Oil interests? or a running body count. The current President said ?the war was a mistake? I was hoping that the news media were running these stories so we were constantly reminded of the sacrifice of our men and woman serving their country. I was wrong. It was all politics. I was reading some of the other comments and some of these people still blame Bush. I thought Bush was no longer the president. If the new President thinks war is a mistake then as commander and chief order the immediate withdrawal of all troops. No he sends more to Afghanistan, sticks to the gradual turning over of operations pull out plan that was in affect prior to taking office and all his pals in the news media just stop reporting about Iraq. I am glad they ran this story. I did not see it until now. Let me guess Sunday morning show. (Don?t get me wrong I am glad they ran it). God bless this family, and all those who have dedicated themselves to the defense of this great country.
- I'd like to add another comment in support of posting this video online. It was incredibly touching and I would very much so like to share it with all those who could not see it live. Thank you, and thank you to the brave and insightful woman who shared her family's heartbreaking story this morning.

- It is not often that I spend my Sunday morning crying over my coffee about a story on "Sunday Morning". Today I did. The sight of his mother at the gravesite is unbearable. You must make Martha's segment a video on your site, so that we may share her emotion and fine tribute to her nephew with the world. In this culture of celebrity, true human sacrifice is rarely lauded. Please remember Brian and his family in your prayers, I will.

- I completely agree with you. I was tremendously moved by this story and glad to see it aired on CBS Sunday Morning. I always enjoy your human interest stories, but this one was especially important to air. I, too, would love to see the video posted so that it (and its tremendous impact) could be shared. I was disappointed not to find it.
Sincere condolences to Brian Bradshaw's family and friends and to all of the other families who have sacrificed so dearly for the rest of us. - Reply to this comment
- my heart goes out to martha gillis and her family and friends on the horrible loss of brian. my son also served in this war, it could have just as easily been my family. it's a crime that we don't honor our soldiers on a more national level, but i guess that would be too "uncomfortable" for our politicians who continue to support this lousy war.i will cry for joy the day this country is no longer at war with anyone.
