Comments on: Return To Tiananmen Square, 20 Years Later
Some Things Have Changed Since China's Bloody Crackdown On Demonstrators In 1989, Including The Dreams Of Democracy
- "The hallmark of the new generation that's been educated since the '90s is to shut up about ideals and pursue your own self interest."
A good lesson for Americans -- and how we got into so much economic trouble.
And maybe the reason why our supposed answers to our economic problems are to bail out the banks and the car companies, and to juke unemployment stats. The last thing our political system in Washington wants is for the citizenry to pay attention, be involved, or work towards our nation's ideals.
No, no, the "answer" to our problems is to go back to the mall and do some more shopping. - Reply to this comment
- This was a typical British operation to sensationalize a protest in China in order that PRC could be suckered into taking worthless Federal Reserve Notes in exchange for their labor.
That's why shut down all journalism for at least a while because they knew that the British were using the incident to incite a revolution and get their leaders to make 'blue jeans'.
It's the same tactic that the British Financial Empire (Wall Street/City of London) uses today to get kids to beg their parents for toys McDonald's Happy Meals. - Reply to this comment
- I live in China. Most of these comments deriding the article are very naive I think. Requesting or demanding better reporting??? Give me a break. The US is one of the most psychologically dumbed down countries on the planet. Even the intellectuals think they get real news because their brains tell them they are understanding it and they tell themselves they can recognize the truth. What a bunch of lies. The Chinese deal with a different and similar reality. Most people just aren't as naive or ignorant about the abuses of government and power. The most striking truth in the article are the last two paragraphs.
"The hallmark of the new generation that's been educated since the '90s is to shut up about ideals and pursue your own self interest." And self interest means letting the Communist Party rule ... and letting go of the dreams that 20 years ago - if only for a brief time - so many believed could come true.
The only thing important to these people besides keeping their nose clean is making money.
A centrally planned government has huge advantages. The US has been trying to do the same in coordination with business but under the radar, only they may have run out of time. Who knows, the people are definitely still asleep and ignorant. They don't even understand they should be revolting. Anger comes after you are no longer depressed or afraid. Rich people who have millions but lost a few hundred thousand feel like they need to cut back on their kids college expenses. Give me a break. Drones. - Reply to this comment
- I've come to expect higher levels of professional OBJECTIVE journalism by CBS Sunday Morning. It is your duty to completely re-produce that report and ACCURATELY explain all the reasons why the students staged an uprising.

VERY WELL PUT BRIAN!!! Those of you reading this section please read Brian's complete post.
The bravery and courage the young Chinese man demonstrates in this picture is incredible. It shows to the world that people still have the power to rise up and defy tyranny. This message must be made clear in the minds of the leaders of all nations that we the people do have a point we will not be pushed beyond. Blood has run in the streets through out world history for these very reasons, lets hope we will not have to experience that again. God Speed USA - Reply to this comment
- Good article in as much as you explain the changes that have occurred since Tiananmen in '89, that the ruling communists did make changes as a result, but the obvious question to me that's left unanswered here is "What exactly happened to Tank man?" Please China, would you answer that for us?

- Americans can vote for their leaders
...and they've obtained Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and George Bush, just to name a few of the more "illustrious" ones.
Maybe, CBS, voting for our leaders is just a little over-hyped. - Reply to this comment
- In this world you would be hard pressed to find a true democracy. Whether you have a system of one party or a system of two parties that control you still have no true democracy. Those in control are interested in the will of the people only as long as it serves their best interests to consider the will of the people. The United States is not a democracy but rather a republic. A republic that serves the interest of the rich and powerful. For true freedom, one must look to the core of what is. - Wow, what a skewed report on China. It COMPLETELY ignores the anti-Capitalist reasons for the uprising.
What your reporter fails to mention is that the wealth that was created as mostly for the elite both in China and here in the US as Chicago School advocates of Milton Friedman convinced the Chinese leadership to sell off the government owned corporations. Which they did...to friends and relatives who all made off with billions while workers there earn pennies... and while our own Middle Class has been decimated. Thirty years of anti-worker "Reaganomics" have only enriched a few while ignoring the poor and middle classes around the world.
The irony in your report is that is suggests that most people in China have yet to see the "Tank Man" photo, thus not getting the entire story about that event. In the same way, irresponsbile partisan reporting by the media in the US fails to deliver the entire story to most people in America.
