- I am all for less meat more fish instead. Not cutting all meat out however. I have anemia and the iron in the meat works for me faster than veggies. The problem that most average americans will find with this "whole grain, no processed foods, more fish, etc" is the cost.
Let me explain: I am in a one income family with a two year old. So I have to cut costs where I can. My husband and I did a "health food" grocery shopping one month and spent $245 on groceries that only lasted about 2 weeks. The problem with these foods is that they expire fast. Fresh fruit and veggies don't stay fresh, milk goes bad in 2 weeks, etc.
When we grocery shop normally, we can spend about $150 for the same amount of time. So if you calculate up the whole month you will find we spend $190 less a month on groceries eating the "american way" instead of the vegian way. So that is why most americans stay on the regular diet. In my opinion of course. - Reply to this comment
- I think that these Firemen have been sniffing to much smoke. They are also trying to blow
smoke up too many butts to get their point across. If you have a balanced diet of Vegetables, meat. fish, poultry, dairy, grains, and nuts, you can live for a long time without eating like a rabbit. My Grandfather came over from the "Old Country" back in 1898. He ate what he wanted, enjoyed it and lived til he was 91, because he ate sensibly.
I think this fireman and his daddy wanted their 5 minutes of fame, and use CBS as a Soap Box. By the way if you "Smoke Eaters" real this comment, I'm making Eggplant Parmesan tonight with meat balls on the side................................ - Reply to this comment

- I am in my 70s and have been a meat eater all of my life. I have been battling high cholesterol for years. I thought I would try going on a vegetarian diet and guess what? My cholesterol is now normal. I don't have to take any kind of meds any more and I feel great. Believe me if a 70 something year old can do it, anyone can.

- Even if people don't choose to go completely vegetarian, there's no doubt that less meat and fat consumption is healthier.
Cutting your meat consumption by half (or substituting with more fish), cutting out most processed foods and eating some more whole grains, fresh veggies and fruits is not too difficult to do. You don't have to go to the extreme, just make some modifications in your diet and habits.
People from the mediterranean area have a much healthier diet based on that. Low in meat and dairy, lots of fresh veggies and grains, olive oil instead of butter, etc.
I love a good cheeseburger and bacon every now and then, but also enjoy Greek, Indian and Middle Eastern veggie foods that make up for it by using spices for flavor so that it's not at all bland. Hummus, tabouleh and falafel with some tahini sauce on pita bread is delicious and much more healthy than a cheeseburger. And all of the above can be found in nearly every supermarket in the "Specialty foods" section.
There are a wide variety of options available these days and considering how expensive meat is these days, in this economy, I don't think it would hurt any of us to find alternatives to meat for at least some of our meals.
I've also heard that buffalo and venison (where available) are much lower in fat and if you hunt, certainly less expensive than beef. - Reply to this comment
- I loved your story on "Going Cold Turkey From Meat" that aired this morning! Congratulations to Rip Esselstyn's success in starting his buddies down the road to meatless living! And finally, a physician, his father, Dr. Esselstyn who sees the importance of healthy eating and how a change in lifestyle can eliminate disease, instead of writing countless prescriptions for high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, antacids, etc. As a registered dietitian myself, and registered nurse, I was just floored when hearing Nancy Rodriguez, the nutritionist who was interviewed, say that by eliminating meat, our diets might be deficient in certain nutrients. Now, I am not sure if Ms. Rodriguez is a registered dietitian or a nutritionist (there is a difference), but a registered dietitian would know the huge benefits of being a vegetarian. I will give her some slack and assume that some of her interview may have been edited out, but being a ?vegetarian? is one of the best things we can do for ourselves. Sure, you want to do it right, just like anything, but the Esselstyn?s have clearly shown that it can be done right. People today in America should not worry about being deficient is certain nutrients. We need to worry about nutrient excess----excess in fat, calories, cholesterol, saturated fat, etc. With vegetarianism done right, we can eliminate so many diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis, depression, and countless other ailments that people bring upon themselves. Please know that the American Dietetic Association is a proponent of vegetarianism. - I have been a vegan vegetarian for over 20 years now. Best thing I have ever done for myself and the planet. Once you leave the meat based diet you will discover the endless possibilities of foods that are so wonderful and tasteful than you could have ever imagined.

- "But why prolong your life if you can't enjoy it? "
Geez. It is so sad that people think that they won't enjoy life if they don't kill animals for food.
Seriously, you won't miss it. - Reply to this comment
- The problem isnt being a vegetarian it is forcing the rest of us to accommodate your eating lifestyle by banning the public consumption or use of animal products. The exeception being the fertilizer utilized to grow those veggies.

- Wow -- Fantastic --- I gave up meat 11 years ago but still eat eggs & fish. Having said that, I have also been eating lots of bad stuff. A week ago, I found Natalia Rose's book "Detox 4 Women" and have been following her detox program. Perfect timing. I plan to order the book and not go back to bad habits. Thanks so very much for the validation and support.
I LOVE SUNDAY MORNING.
