Worried About Gas Prices? Ben Stein Says Don’t Look To Government Or OPEC To Help
- I believe there are things the government can do to lower the price of gas:
Put in place price and production controls. The oil companies would have to sell gas at a certain price and produce at levels so there will not be shortage lines.
Declare oil prices as a national emergency so that envionmental laws would be suspended. That would pave the way for more refineries, nuclear power plants, drilling in Alaska, Florida, California etc. Also, start mining and producing oil from oil shale.
President Bush should challenge the American people to be independent of Foriegn oil in 10-years or less. Kennedy did something similar with landing on the moon and it worked. - Reply to this comment
- Keep in mind Directive 51, he could take us over, suspend Congress and our Constitution. Let''''s have an article on that one!!!

There''s no way in hell the people in our military would ever follow his orders to attack Americans under martial law. - Reply to this comment

- He''s a capitalist.... capitalist are the same as communists...as far as creating a super wealthy upper class that is extremely small...and keeping a huge lower class of serfs.... they just go about it a different way. Time to come back to the middle. Stein must have been paid a pretty nice sum to open his stinking hole and say that ***.

- I would like to know what happen to the fines for gouging. The government was ready to fine gas stations for over pricing but yet it''s ok for the oil exec rake in billions in the first 3 months of this year. There is no shortage. That''s just an excuse they are using. Think about it if it was do you really think they only be a $4 a gallon. Gas would $10-15 a gallon by now if we were really running low. We have more oil now than 20 years ago. There is no reason to go from $0.98/per ga in 2000 to $3.89/per ga 2008. Will somebody please tell me what has happen in 8 years that hasn''t happen since cars was invented. I know someone is waiting to say something about 9/11 but did gas go up $4 a gallon after Pearl Harbour. NO

- Wow, I''m surpirsed to see how short sighted these comments are. I guess a lot of you have quite a bit of free time, time that is best filled with blaming every possible disparity of which festers in humanity on conservitve thoughts and ideas. Let the oil companies make their money, the industry is a volitile one, how many of you would like to work in the Niger delta. We are the ones that controls what leaves our wallets, we are not entitled to cheap oil, nor are we entitled to price it. We can however, take the bus, drive effecant and use our money a little wiser.

- Ben Stein tells it like it is. He is extremely intelligent and sees things very clearly. We have got to tell the global warming tree huggars to shut the hell up and get out of our way.

- One needs only look at the difference between the cost of a barrel of oil and the cost of gas to see the 150% profit that Americans are paying at the pump that goes into oil company coffers. That''s horrendous. Putting the welfare of oil companies ahead of the economy generally is wrong in the extreme. Period!
