Comments on: Is America Too Sweet On Sugar?
Sugar Has Been In The American Diet Since Columbus, But It Might Be Time To Cut Down
- This was an excellent piece but why not take it a step further. It would be more useful to discuss healthy alternatives, which I never see on television. Healthy sweeteners are RAW unfiltered honey (not processed), which come in many flavors, pure maple syrup (as opposed to sugar water like Log Cabin), and stevia products, like Stevia Plus (an
herb with NO calories and much sweeter than sugar). You would serve the public better by getting the word out on healthier products. Fresh fruit is also very healthy. - Reply to this comment
- This is an excellent report and quite correct. I wish however that more emphasis had been made with regard to the poison alternatives, Aspartame, Splenda and Corn syrup. These products are very dangerous and should be banned.
It is not good enough to lump the whole sugar trip together, natural cane sugar in moderation is exceptable, whereas the afore mentioned chemically produced poisons are not. If we have a modicom of love for our children we should go into our kitchens right now and throw any food or drink containing these chemicals into the garbage.
Start reading labels in the supermarkets and resist buying anything containing this junk, I promise, you're children will be much improved in health, personality and intellect within six months of denying them this mind bending trash. - Reply to this comment
- Thanks for telling America what I found out 3 years ago. I weighed in at over 300 pounds at age 43. I had been morbidly obese for my entire life. I had hypertension, dangerous cholestrol levels and was on allergy medications. I lost 120 pounds of fat and 20 inches in my waist. My blood pressure is now 110/70 and no longer take any medications, even allergy medicine! All this by cutting out the sugar in my diet. I actually weigh less today than when I did in the fifth grade.

- Thank you CBS for not only producing this great piece, but also for giving a nice chunk of air time. I thouroughly enjoyed this indepth story, as it told the truth about today's sugar "epidemic" and the true dangers of consuming it on such a regular basis. I especially appreciated the attention given to the issues of high fructose corn syrup ("HFCS"). More and more is being discovered about this cheap sweetner, including a recent finding that its consumption can disrupt the metabolic pathway that uses copper to make connective tissues (elastin and collagen). The result can be unhealthy skin and "mushy" underlying tissues. And this is the tip of the ice burg of issues with HFCS.
Again, thank you for this excellent story. - Reply to this comment
