Dear Ben,
I thought your comments were right on point.
I would have added an apology to our allies ( not the Coalition of the Willing), and ask them to enter into a diplomatic process that would stop the region from now falling apart. At this moment, because we lack energy independence from the region,, we cannot afford to have our energy sources tied to the point of a gun controlled by Islamic fundamentalists

I think that is a well written speech, but it gives no resolutions. I think all that agree that such a speech should be given should think first before they jump on that band wagon, such a speech gives the go ahead to all that hate the US, and all terrorists who look to gain ground in IRAQ another leg to stand on. We need to start supporting the effort to drive out terrorism, starting in a place that is full of it, IRAQ. Quit telling yourself that Iraq never had connections with terrorism, look at the bombs blowing up all over the place killing our troops, that is terrorism at its finest, so you mean to tell me that it wasnt there when the president entered Iraq?? Think about it before you cast it off as bad idea, it may be a tough fight, but lets not beat ourselves.

Oh please.

Stein has been a mindless apologist for conservative idiocy since the beginning. Just Google this moron. See what he has written in the last 5 years.

I guess he thinks we should appreciate the fact that he has had a change of heart. When you're done throwing Bush under the bus how 'bout an apology from YOU Bennie, for being a war-monger and generally clueless yahoo for most of the last decade?

*******.

OK. Ben makes some good points. He did not, though, provide the details to the solution and what to do with the aftermath we leave behind. So the blue ribbon bi-partisan committee solves this in 30 days. I wish I could see any good way out of this World--not just U.S.--situation. Unfortunately, I don't believe radical muslims can control their own people, and they are driven by hatred. Please don't tell us that we deserve to be hated. It does not provide the solution we seek. We are here right now, and I would like to know how to preserve America's security and at the same time assure no further attacks by terrorists.

You might also find that future investigatons will reveal that he was completely justified making the decisions that he made, and he could be seen as a great president.

Only history will tell either way - how many times in history has someone been criticized for making an unpopular decision, and decades later it has proven to be the right one.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but that doesnt mean that everyone is right; and what appears to be right (or wrong) now, may prove to be wrong (or right) when looked back on. Remember hindsight is 20/20.

***, that's good. Too bad Bushie is too much of an egotisitical coward to utter such humble and true words. Hell, he might even come up in my estimation a tad if he did.

I'd love to see that speech.

Then I'd love to see the blowhards who led the cheerleading for this disaster, including Mr. Stein admit they were wrong, apologize to all of those who correctly predicted this disaster and announce their retirement from public discourse.

Sadly, I don't expect we'll see either of those things.

To be truly effective the people who have commented on Mr. Stein's piece need to speak to a broader audience. Let's spend our time flooding the internet chat rooms, blogs, the White House, the RNC, the DNC, and every congressperson in the land with our strong desire to make this country right again and to act the way we know we should to help the US and the world move forward - let's not continue into the hole Bush has dug. Let's be Mad as Hell and Not Take It Anymore!

Though Ben Stein was a speech writer for previous Republican administrations, he obviously doesn't know Bush's style. Speech too simplistic for most Americans, though he did supposedly win in 2000 and 2004 but then again there was the ballot problems, chads, and long lines to vote. Bush would never admit to his mistake, that would be admitting to his father, that George the 1st was right. This war may be the ruination of the Republicans this go-around. For those of us from the VietNam era, this is comparible, it is a "no win" situation!
