I appreciate Ben and his observations but I believe he should double check his facts on the Federal Reserve. It is true they can and do print money at will but from what I have been taught it is not a part of the government. It is owned by a private banking cartel. I have heard it said that it is as Federal as "Federal Express". They print money and then "loan" it to the federal government to be paid back with interest.

He says:
The Republicans - who started the problem with excessive tax cuts in the Bush years - will have to agree to raise taxes, at least upon the truly rich (of whom there are plenty).
I say more important that raising taxes on rich individuals is making corporations pay taxes. This will not be achieved by raising the corporate tax rate and leaving the loopholes. Do away with all of their deductions, tax shelters, etc.. If whatever the tax rate is they actually have to pay that, no exceptions or loopholes, we can lower the tax rate and increase revenue. After all even 1% of 14 billion is much more that G.E. paid last year.
For those who argue that making corporations actually pay taxes will increase unemployment and raise prices I have a simple suggestion. Google the top 100 profit making corporations last year. Then Google their employment stats. last year in this country. Then Google their prices last year in this country. Most, while making substantial profit, reduced employment and raised prices in our country. Obviously the current corporate plan for success involves reducing employment in this country to the minimum, whether they pay taxes or not. As unemployment increases they will have to lower rather than raise prices if they wish to sell anything here because otherwise no one will be able to buy their products and services.

In Florida there is a huge underground economy.

Many workers in Florida do not have a S.S. card.

I would guess that things are the same in other states.

With such a large number of workers not paying into S.S. I can see why it might run out of money.

I believe the truth lies somewhere between the two extremes of what people claim is the truth. Republicans and democrat alike are equally responsible for this mess and therefore both will be each required to finally admit that (1) taxes for some people are too low, (2) government spending on non-essential entitlement programs must be curtailed. The tax code must be rewritten in such a way as it actually lowers the tax rate (for corporations and individuals alike) but also removes the thousands of loopholes through which some entitles slide through without
even touching the walls. By their very nature, conservatives are not known for their searing logic even when they are happy. It will therefore be nearly impossible to get them to see the truth now that they are out of their minds with rage. Ironically, their true nemesis is not really with a black president--that for obvious reason they find all kinds of things to complain about.. Because in fact, they are simply proxies for those who really can not show their face on the political stage. Let's face it, we all go to the polls and vote for the government we expect is empowered to represent OUR best interests. Problem is that one man-one vote can never compete with one-corporation-many-lobbyists. Why does anyone think that despite the fact that the county is suffering a cash shortage--- that it is IMPOSSIBLE to get the "most fortunate" among us to pay any taxes--- sure the average conservative buys into all the paid programming they are exposed to. For the upper class, the conservatives are the perfect median to carry their banners. A group already known for its tendency toward jingoism. All they have to do is throw them a "banana" in the form of some outrages lie about something they already dislike--- and the rest is what you see every day. For example: the other day a fellow named THUMP was confronted with the facts concerning a "banana" he was throwing to the masses--- his response, " so what--- it pays the rent." On the democratic side of things,, they pander to their own set of lobbyists who exert such power and influence--they literally make creepy little ****** out of them, as the entire congress.

So how do we get out this mess? Someone on TV yesterday said it best when asked how important things could get done during an election year. He said "first thing-- forget about being reelected. Second thing-- just do the RIGHT THING."

So just tell me if this arch-conservative has finally admitted that Ronnie and his bogus supply side economics were the disaster that history proved them to be or is he just sniping at a moderate democrat?

"Trickle Down Economics" works great in a "perfect world"... which ignorant conservatives believe.

The fact is we live in an "imperfect world". Case in point, the rich narcissistic fat cats will spend the money obtained by their tax cuts on more posh estates, fancy cars, expensive vacations and beach homes for their mistresses.

In the end, these funds simply won't "trickle down" to the masses...

Republicans are so dumb.

We're screwed, and there's no way out. All those things that used to be made in this country, and all those high tech jobs that used to be held by people in this country, have been shipped overseas, and the greed that caused this to happen will not go away. Without all those jobs and the associated industry and employment that went with them, there will be no economic recovery. Unless of course we can somehow get McDonalds and Burger King to hire another 40 million people or so.

As a middle class American, I am tired of having pins stuck in me in the name of voodoo economics.

America will never cut enough out of Defense. That is what brings in all the money selling to other countries. Without the Military Industrial Complex America would rank as a Third World country in terms of GDP.
