I'm adding another comment just so Dem-Gone-Insane's isn't the first one people see. How is it that some people think that voicing their opinion is an argument, and insulting others and shouting louder settles the issue? If you don't like pot, don't use it. And if you think it is bad, say so, and vote accordingly, but don't cite false evidence like the gateway fantasy, and brain damage. It seems natural that humans believe "we're right and they're wrong". What you add after that is how I judge a person. Do you want to beat them into submission, or burn them at the stake, or do you respect that people can want different things? Doesn't democracy presuppose a difference in opinions? And doesn't capitalism require free trade, and not just of some things that some people feel are moral?

The wording of the question fails to distinguish between medical marijuana use and recreational marijuana use. It's likely that those who feel marijuana should be illegal everywhere will want federal laws against its use enforced locally, but that they'll make an exception for medical use. Under the wording of the question, they aren't permitted to make that distinction.

Also, distinguishing between the federal laws enforced can boost the anti-marijuana support. For example, pro-pot supporters gain strength when seeking to downgrade penalties for having small amounts of pot. Likewise, anti-potters could boost support figures by maintaining federal enforcement for possession of large amounts.

While the poll claims to have polled US adults, it did not include Puerto Rico, a place where US citizens are not registered to vote in federal elections. If the sample does not include a random sample of US citizens, then it should be of registered voters. It is neither.

I don't much care personally. I believe that marijuana is not as harmful as vast quantities of alcohol and tobacco, substances that are legal. However, the relaxation of pot laws are technically against social trends that disfavor the use of alcohol and tobacco. Everyone is down on second-hand smoke and intoxicated driving, but people are hip to smoke dope.

Although I think legalizing marijuana is a bad idea, I do think that States should be able to make their own decisions in this matter.

it is not a bad idea... Go after the problem substances like cocaine heroin meth and prescription drug abuse.

We spend more time going after marijuana users and ignore the problem substances.

and no MJ is not a gateway drug, that would be caffeine nicotine and alcohol, because you will find that most everyone has tried those 3 before MJ

If you call yourself a Republican, as I do, then you cannot side with the federal law. We claim to side with states laws on policies we like, so we cannot oppose states laws in which we do not like. You cannot have it both ways. Legalize it, tax it, and treat it like alcohol. Quit filling our prisons with unnecessary inmates, and quit wasting money on these drug task forces. We want personal responsibility. There it is, you want to use drugs, go ahead. Just to come whining for help when you can't control, or pay for your bad habits.

Don't leagealize pot. It will only cause more problems in our already troubled society. the pot itself is harmless it is the drug called THC in the pot that is bad, it's the only thing that makes this "drug" bad. Without this drug people wouldn't even smoke it anymore!. THC is bad for anyone who injests it and it can be lethal.

Then criminalize sugar while you're at it!

Why does the anti-pot cause find it so difficult to stick to the facts. Sure they are entitled to their opinons about values (like fun is bad), but the facts are the facts. Pot isn't lethal. It is as non-lethal a drug as there is. You can't die from too much pot, even if you 'injest' it. Has the Republican party become fact-averse, or is America itself becoming less educated thanks to our over-crowded schools and pablum journalism? Why can't we focus on what people do after they smoke pot or drink, instead of trying to criminalize their enjoyment? Speaking from experience, pot is also just more than fun. It can help open you to God, something drinking is never going to do.

Where are these polls taken? That makes a big difference, as the government knows. Marijuana is a safer drug than alcohol, why not ban alcohol?

andie52 - NO I very rarely drink, maybe 5 times this year! But I do partake in MJ and I can tell you that many people do one without the other!

Don't use the arguement MJ vs Alcohol as that isn't a fair arguement! Its like a kid saying but Jonny's parents say it's ok so it must be!

LEARN why it's illegal and then decide what you think of and why the government has kept it illegal! George Washington grew Hemp as did many of the Fathers of this country! But I guess they were just drug trafficers? Learn the history before you talk about it so you can be informed instead of laking info!!
