Moreover, quite a while ago, the monarchy made a deal with the state whereby the state receives the income from the highly profitable Crown Estate. That income vastly exceeds the Civil List money that the Queen and Prince Philip receive to help defray their expenses, so the state (and the taxpayers) are doing very well out of that arrangement. Some other members of the royal family receive Parliamentary Annuities in return for carrying out royal engagements and other duties, but the Queen reimburses these.
So, we actually make money out of our Head of State, rather than her costing us money. I doubt the same is true of Obama.
