i found it very interesting to see which cartoon figures my friends and family chose....tells alot about a person, i think....i chose charlie brown and linus and the famous charlie brown christmas tree....
reading these comments amazes me....why so much negativity??...if you don't want to change your photo, then don't!!...no one if forcing you to do anything you don't want to do...and if you feel strongly enough about a problem to spend all that time and energy ranting about it, then get up from your computer and go out into the world and do something at makes a difference....those of us who like to do small amusing things, don't need to be subjected to your negativity!!
I thought the purpose of doing these kinds of things was to promote awareness of the issue. Is it not better to talk about it and get it resolved or not talk about it and have the evil doers run rampant?
I think the only downfall has been WHY am I doing this? Why did I have to google why I am doing this.
It is a great cause and the harm done to children should be stopped.
Instead of putting it down because YOU don't like the way it has been handled, rejoice that the message is getting out there.
Why the negative reactions? The alternatives that some are suggesting- while the most pragmatic are not necessarily what seems to be realistic for some. I see this campaign as generating support for adult survivors, while simultaneously and unwittingly raising a very deep awareness of the nature of abuse. For example- it seems that those who are vocalizing support in favour of this action most have been abused themselves- and this should speak volumes. It obvioulsy allows some form of liberation. Really read through the comments. I see this action in a positive light. One that allows some adults who have experienced abuse as a child to remember good childhood memories as opposed to bad ones. As it lets them focus on the parts of their childhood that were untainted -warm, happy memories. It also shows support for those who have been abused (thus reducing the stigmatization and alienation from society that survivors can feel- which often leads to destructive behavior and sadly repeated cycles). And if nothing else it serves as a strong visual reminding us of the power of a child's imagination. Imagination which in many cases is the sole determinant that enables hope and begets strength and survival. Indeed, escapism at its best- in the innocent form of cartoons. What is so wrong with that? I can think of plethora of harmful escapes- this does not constitute one? The sheer fact that their exist children who have to escape through alternate worlds(fantastical) in order to survive is also very telling. I think this campaign has been extremely effective as can be evidenced by the controversy and commentaries being generated in online forums such as this around the world.
I am totally against this campaign. Of course I believe that child abuse is an awful crime that targets victims unable to defend themselves. And yes I believe that awareness is key in the fight to stop abuse, but facebook is not providing the right type of awareness. This campaign did not bring to light an issue that many never knew about (if you didn't know about child abuse prior to facebooks announcement you need to become informed about the world you live in). People need to be made aware of how they can help, through volunteering and donations, and how to recognize the signs of abuse so they can help protect children. Changing your display picture for a few days doesn't actually do anything. Also the groups I have looked at say nothing about what people can do to be proactive in the groups information. Some members have posted links to organizations (and good for them getting involved to help a cause they care about), but most of the comments on the groups wall are, "I love carebears", "Winnie the Pooh is the best" and so on. People aren't even talking about the issue they claim to be helping! I came across the term "slackivism" the other day, and thats exactly what this campaign promotes. People do something small that requires little effort on their part to "make a difference" so they can feel better about themselves. As soon as December 6th hits, and everyone changes their pictures back to ones of themselves, the majority of them will stop talking about child abuse (if they were ever talking about it in the first place). Ask yourself, how many children has this actually helped? If you want to make a difference and help these kids get involved by doing something more than uploading a picture of Rainbow Bright.
Sorry Gs204 I totally disagree with what you are saying. I saw the the post which encouraged to change profile pics to a cartoon a character, liked the idea and decided to do it. I have always felt the NSPCC is a very important organisation, but regrettably this, and al...ot of others, had been put to the back of my mind, as things do during day to day life. But it got me thinking about it, I looked on facebook for other NSPCC pages which I then joined and now have info from them come up on my daily news feed, which will regularly remind me of the organisation and what its about, and also gives me information on what else I can do support them. I'm sure there are plenty of others who this has had a similar effect on. So if only 10% of the people who have "cartonned" their profile pics do this its worth while as far as I am concerned and I'm sure NSPCC also, as you will see on their official facebook page they are grateful for the campaign raising awareness. The rest who do not look it to the NSPCC further and take further action have done no harm. Yes, eveyone should be doing more to help organisations like this, but unfortunately this does not happen. But if this campaign did not come along I doubt the majority of these people would have done anthing at all. So at least this way they have passed the message on which has in turn encouraged those of us who would.
I am SOO AGAINST anyone harming a child in ANY WAY including emotionally and even distress which would cause future harm.
BUT I will NOT partake in this cartoony stand against child abuse.
I dont need to do this as proof of my ideals and dedication to children and families.
But mainly I wont do it because whenever I hear about any group or person who is professing to
"stand against child abuse",
my mind immediately goes to people or organizations who are PRO CPS.
HOW ABOUT THIS, lets do something in honor of ALL the children abused and MURDERED at the hands of those who fail to protect the REAL "at risk" children and exploit those in their "care" and ignore or attempt to cover up this tragic truth.
I know how conniving people do things.
I know how the enemy can be deceitful in posing as the friend.
I have been hurt, traumatized and tormented enough by these demons and I refuse to "stand" next to them.
I can ALMOST guarantee that amongst the sheep there are wolves, bad wolves laughing hysterically at the feast of "lambs" they will be having as they lead all these sheep to their kill.
This is what I feel from this "event" :
Step 1 get a campaign against child abuse to go rampant.
Step 2 further lobby the hysteria and recruit more unprofessional
"mandatory reporter" sheep.
Step 3 follow up on all the "hysteria generated" leads by nosey citizens and bleeding heart do gooders.
Step 4 infiltrate loving, vulnerable, unsuspecting families and harvest their flesh and blood I.E. OUR CHILDREN.
Step 5 traumatize the entire family unit, implement lifelong suffering and emotional damages, laugh while giving them false hopes.
Step 6 engage in the merriment of collecting FAT bonuses from their successful, propaganda, harvest and child auction.
BTW the bonuses are paid for with your own tax dollars. Furthermore, they not only rip your babies from your nursing breasts, but then they charge you child support while they are in the system.
Average Bonus for "legal" abduction, successful alienation of all blood relatives and inevitable termination of rights and adopting out of your child $4000 or $6000 for a special needs child.
Approximate bonuses earned in the Month of November of 2007 in Riverside county California $70,000
Now I have nothing against my friends who have likely innocently and with good intent joined in the force to
"fight against child abuse".
Many people do not realize that the fight against child abuse is on a playground for those who thrive on the planting of seeds called "false accusations".
I AM 1000% against child abuse of course and that includes the FOUL CHILD ABUSE CARRIED OUT by the robot pawns of agencies who claim to be the "protectors" and enforcers of good against evil, when in FACT they are part of the worst evil there can be.
