The email exchange between ATF and the Phoenix dealers is consistent with AFT running an incompetent operation to let guns walk into the hands of Mexican cartels. The exchange is also consistent with the claims of Katherine Eban's Fortune article that ATF was watching helplessly as guns walked into Mexico courtesy of lax gun laws and shy prosecutors in Arizona. Under both scenarios, ATF agents would represent themselves in their emails to dealers as being fully in control of the situation, even if they weren't.

Everyone saying "It's Bush" or "It's Obama" are completely missing the point and I think that's whay "they" want. It's a central government that has gotten too strong and power-hungry. The ATF has been rouge for a while now, like the TSA has become. They wanted to pass some laws, that didn't have any support, because there wasn't a problem. So, they tried to create a problem. Vote for people who believe in small government and as soon as they start to grow that government, vote them out. You don't need government telling you how many firearms you can purchase, just like you don't need government telling you how many ounces of cola you can purchase.

This ATF and Justice Department program whose purpose was to work up the line and bust the Mexican Cartel big-wigs for illegal arms shipments started during the Bush Administration yet no Republican "investigating" it wants to talk to or about them. But since something went wrong, guns fell into the wrong hands etc., of course it's the worst most evil thing ever and it's all Obama's fault. One Katie Pavlich of a right-wing website is one of the chief peddlers of this ginned up and exaggerated scandal as it relates to the White House. She sat on C-Span on June 23 with Major Garret spewing distortion. About the toughest question she was asked was, "Is this a partisan issue?" Oh no, she said 36 Democrats said this issue should be investigated. Well certainly they probably would say this or any other issue should be at least investigated. And she cited Fox News "Democrat" Pat Caddell as calling for blood. Pat Cadell is a Fox News patsy Democrat. Also, the Pavlich book is titled, "Fast and Furious: Obama's Bloodiest Scandal and its Shameless Cover-up." Yeah, that sounds real non-partisan, alright.

Not at all surprising that the gun dealers are behaving with a great deal more honesty and integrity than the Obama Administration.

I think it's kind of pathetic that all of the information in that article is old news to me. I've seen those documents, read those letters and heard that info in the past. Gotta love media blackouts.

Reuters reported in 2009 that the U.S. was considering the U.N. or groups of other nations basically determine gun sale regulations for the U.S. Why does it surprise anyone that the DOJ would be used to institute another, ineffective burden on legitimate gun shops across the U.S.? It is very unlikely the Senate will go along with the current House inclination, contempt. What is disastrous is the assertion of privilege for Fast and Furious, for which the White House denies any involvement. What then would be the justification for this provisional privilege? This is not likely a constitutionally authorized act, and underscores the rats nest we now have in Washington. This is somewhat Watergateesque in that the cover-up is at least as bad as the attendant fallout from such shenanigans. Maybe this time, the more leftist press will actually do some honest investigative reporting and find out what information these thugs are hiding from the American people.

I think something everyone here needs to realize, this started in 2006. This isn't Bush bashing I am pointing out what happens when you Republicans gladly allowed your President to exercise considerable power and now you are being in the rear end and you aren't too happy. Obama is simply exercising the power given to the Presidency during the Bush years, now the chickens are coming home to roost.

If you want to blame Obama start with Republicans during the Bush years. Democrats are exactly the same they protect their own and magically become dedicated to the Constitution when they are out of power.

This is what the "American people" wanted, they got it and now are crying foul.

If the allegations are true the Obama administration should suffer the consequences but Democrats won't allow it. Why? Because Bush was given free reign to run roughshod on the civil rights of American citizens with the Patriot Act and the right supported him. Now the shoe is on the Democratic foot so stop crying foul about your civil liberties or rule of law and admit any President cannot exercise this kind of power. Hold Republicans as responsible as the Democrats for creating this fiasco.

What we have here is a firearms dealer making money off the sale expressing his fears about selling to "bad people," and ATF first reassuring him that the sale is critical to ongoing investigations, then using that sale to justify enhanced surveillance of dealer sales of long guns, in a manner specifically prohibited by Congress?!?
