The real truth is that the GOP Congress passed the bush tax cuts in 2001/2003 using controversial Congressional reconciliation procedures, and they had sunset provisions that made them expire at the end of 2010, since otherwise they would fall under the Byrd Rule, which would have allowed Senators to block a piece of legislation if it purports significantly to increase the federal deficit beyond a ten-year term.
It was the Democrats that were the real fiscal conservatives back in 2003, seeing deficits beginning to rise while bush was waging TWO WARS, and it took a dickie cheney tie-breaker to finally pass the JGTRRA budget buster!
These budget deficits have only gotten worse since 2001, and unlike saint ronnie who changed course after his 1981 tax cuts, and saw the need for tax increases, the ideological republicans like you saw no reason to change course from tax cuts during WARtime, and have been fiscally irresponsible!
The GOP had to institute the sunset clause in the bush tax cuts, and that time has come, so along with returning the tax rates to more sanity, we also have spending cuts beginning on Jan. 1, 2013 -- both necessary in order to balance our federal budget.
But please, keep up the billy o'liely and rush limbaugh (two multi-millionaires not wanting to pay their fair share) political rhetoric of "gifts" and "free stuff," since it will only lose your republican party of hate and discontent, even more votes in the future!

1] The Senate has not had a single budget since the Democrat Party took control (why have a budget since it might limit your spending), 2] only ONE President has had more than a Trillion dollars in deficit in any given year (and Obama has had EVERY year over this amount - while Bush never had one. Even the last year with both wars AND the first bailout was still under a trillion dollars deficit.), 3] No war has ever been payed for in a timely manner (check your history), 4] not a single President has had a reduction in the deficit since the 1950's (Clinton reduced the public debt side of the deficit but increased the government side more than he reduced the public debt - i.e. he increased the deficit) and last, but not least 5] Both parties are responsible but the simple fact is that if you take EVERY CENT FROM EVERY AMERICAN, you MIGHT pay for a month or two of the current government spending. Until the politicians stop treating taxpayers as an endless source of revenue, until we start WISELY spending the taxpayer money, until we quit supporting the non-productive portion of American society, until we limit what we spend, we are doomed to follow in the footsteps of every other fallen society.
The policies in place have us lined up to be "less great". It started with ObamaCare. What liberals don't understand, it getting everyone covered that is the problem. It's just how it was done and set up. It is not sustainable no matter how much you tax the rich.
