Even as a rabid Republican, I have always had serious dounbts about whether Edward broke the law.

However, in my eyes, the worst thing that he did was run for Pres and VP with this miasma hovering over him like swamp gas.

So, John, you want to go out and do some public service in your life, fine. Admirable. But, please don't ever run for public office again.

I don't like him, but I've also had doubts -- even the experts were divided on his guilt.

Guilty or not, he is slimy, way too self-absorbed and I hope he never runs again. Constituents deserve better.

The difference between Edwards and most politicians is that he truly has made every effort for the poor in his career, and he is smart, wicked-scary smart. He may very well be the smartest person who has ever walked in to the Senate in the past 100 years.

Guilty because you don't like him? Isn't that juror misconduct?

This whole thing was a political witch hunt by an out of control prosecutor who just blew a bunch of taxpayer moneey. Sure Edwards is a sleaze but that's not the same as violating the law.

I totally agree. This is one reason our debt is out of control. I think a few should lose their jobs over this. I don't believe most of what was brought up in court should have been allowed. The prosecutor was just trying to score points.

Bjinva, how do you feel about the Ken Starr investigation which -- when it couldn't find any illegal activity on the part of the Clintons -- started investigating their own personal lives?

Which cost the taxpayers millions and millions and millions of dollars.

And finally ended up with the House voting to impeach on something that while immoral (just like what Edwards did) was not illegal?

It's nice to read posts made by intelligent people.

Anyone trying to make this as a pure partisan issue is a foll being taken advantage of.

I have to agree with the jury on the one count on which they came to a verdict. I honestly think that Bunny Mellon knew that Edwards was trying to keep his mistress secret and was giving him money for that express reason. So it wasn't a "campaign contribution" and it's acceptance or use wasn't illegal. Immoral? Most definitely. Unethical? Highly. But not illegal.

However, I'm not real sure I'd be standing in front of a microphone talking about "God" when the entire country knew that I cheated on my wife, who was dying of cancer, with a two-bit nut-case. Never mind that I'd gotten her knocked up and was trying to hide that, too.

If this is really "Christianity", I want nothing to do with it.

There still isn't any doubt in my mind that Edwards did break a few laws in the middle of all of this. But re-trying him for the remainder of the charges is really a waste of money. Truth of the matter is, he's basically already "gotten his." Whatever reputation he ever had is in ruins. His political career is certainly at an end. And, perhaps the biggest justice of all, he's got Rielle Hunter and her bastard brat hung around his neck for the rest of his life.

Webster's dictionary defines the word:

Definition of BASTARD (noun)
1: an illegitimate child

Websters defines "illegitimate":

Definition of ILLEGITIMATE
1: not recognized as lawful offspring; specifically : born of parents not married to each other

Are John Edwards and Rielle Hunter married? No.

Has John Edwards claimed paternity of the child Rielle Hunter bore? Yes.

Does this show that, legally, Rielle Hunter's child is John Edwards' bastard? Yes.

Well, 99%. I don't know enough about the kid to use such strong language, but your first three paragraphs I can instantly identify and fully agree with.

hypnotoad72, the use of the word "bastard" to refer to the offspring of Rielle Hunter and John Edwards isn't "strong language." It is not a pejorative, nor does it speak to any defects in the child's moral character. It merely identifies her as being the illegitimate child of two unmarried people.

There are actually quite a few bastards that have grown up to become very famous and have done things that have significantly advanced the human race. Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Paine and Alexander Hamilton among them.

And the dictionary defines a "brat" as being "1. A child, especially a spoiled or ill-mannered one." I don't know if Edwards' bastard is spoiled or ill-mannered (nor do I care), but she is certainly a child.
