1) I'm not Christian. I really don't care that you are. I don't have a problem with Christians in general, but I do have a problem with Christians who think it's okay to enforce their particular beliefs on everyone who isn't their particular brand of Christian via the law. Separation of Church and State.
2) Based on that, you don't have the right to deny me equality under the law. Homosexuals aren't asking for *special* rights, they are asking for *equal* rights. Your religion stops at the line where my personal rights begin. That line is the same for everyone and is based on equality under the law, which is something that homosexuals currently do not have.
3) Marriage has been defined as one man and one woman for how long? Where? What cultures? Marriage is much more and much different than many Christians like to acknowledge. No particular group, culture or religion has the right to define marriage for ALL groups, cultures or religions. Read up on the history of marriage before you raise that point again.
4) We are generally very tolerant, as a whole, up to the point that we are being trampled upon. We are currently being trampled upon by people who think they have the right to define OUR lives. You do not have that right, nor should you have that right. Unfortunately many people still do not understand that, or separation of church and state, or equality under the law. Notice the repeating theme?
5) The Bible's standards are for CHRISTIANS and ONLY Christians. Your religion is for you, my beliefs are for me.
6) Expulsion of God? By that, you probably mean expulsion of Christianity or Christian principles. If so, you should know that this nation was NOT founded on Christian principles. This is a sadly mistaken, unfortunately common, belief. Read the writings of Madison or some of the letters or correspondence written by Jefferson or Washington.
As for the article: Too little Obama. The attempt is laughable, and sad. Equality is equality. We ask for nothing more, and will accept nothing less. - Reply to this comment
- leftsocialist----You seriously need a logic course. That line of reasoning was the most convoluted example of tortured logic I have yet to see.
I sure hope you were being facetious because ,if not, you just embarrassed yourself with that bit of nonsense. - Reply to this comment
- I agree. Obama knows nothing about foreigh relations or many other things he should know about. When he bowed down to the King of Saudi Arabia he pled homage to the Muslim world which shows his true colors. I lived and work there for seven years. You do not bow down to the head of state from another country unless you are willing to submit to their rule. His aim is to lead this country down the path of ruination claiming he inherited the full problem.

- And I can respect those with whom I disagree with the exception of homosexual christianphobes. That hate-mongering gambit can work both ways. If someone disagrees with the homosexual lifestyle it is called hate, so I guess it follows that if someone disagrees with the Christian lifestyle it can also be called hate.
I know I'm wasting my time as most addicts will justify their lifestyle no matter what. : )

- I guess that's a step. But there are many other gay partnerships that do not recieve the protections that federal employees might get (note, I did not say "have now") if Congress approves.
Since I am not gay myself I will not speak for them but I believe I can advocate the following:
1. Obama should invoke an executive order repealing the Defense of Marriage Act in its entirety.
2. This should be followed by a decree that the official White House position on homosexuality is one of moral neutrality.
3. Given our mess of a foreign policy, I'm not sure "straights" should serve in the millitary let alone gays. OTOH, if the heteros#xual community can serve, then the homos@xual one should be able to with out reservation. "Don't ask don't tell" implies the gay soldier should still hide in the closet. I think that's unfair.
4. And lastly, the "O" man should provide a leadership example that he is truly committed to equality under the law by pushing to fire up the old "Equal Rights Amendment" (remember that one?) with one important addition: Wherever the amendment expressly forbids "discrimination on the basis of s*x" there should be an addition that says "and/or s*xual orientation".
I believe that would be sufficient to pave the way for the gay community to obtain the full validation the rest of us (more or less) enjoy. Of course that would include the right for same s+x couples to marry.
It's all about fairness. That's where I'm coming from. To be honest, homos&xual whoopie makes me itch a little, too. But to parse out a segment of our country that may make up 1/12 of the population for discriminatory treatment or outright abuse is not only grossly unjust but foolish as well. - Reply to this comment

- Saturn, I empathize with your frustration, but I think right now is a time for patience. This is such a hot-button issue for a lot of folks that we just need to wait and see. Obama will be in office for at least four years, so let's see where we are on the issue at the end of that time. Keep up the pressure but don't be discouraged. I think Bill Clinton set back the movement by jumping on the gays in the military issue too quickly and then had to back off and we ended up with the horrible don't ask, don't tell, policy. Many in the military are on your side, but many aren't. Gays will be able to server openly and honorably in the military and gays and lesbians will be afforded federal marriage protections. It is coming and I don't think anything can stop it now. Give this president a chance. Unlike the former administration who only listened to one voice and it wasn't yours, this president is at least trying to act like the president for all Americans. As a straight woman I can tell you that many, many, straight people are on your side and we will get it done. I am sorry there is so much hatred, but it has been pounded into thousands of Americans in their churches. Fortunately, not all churches, but many, so it is a hard prejudice to overcome.

- There has long been a basic problem in dealing with homosexuals and lesbians. The old addage about separating the sin from the sinner doesn't work. This is because homosexuals and lesbians require that one approve of their lifestyle in order to show respect. For a Christian this does not work. I can respect someone I disagree with politically or otherwise, but the homosexual has linked approval of his lifestyle with personal respect. And this presents a problem, especially with pending hate crime legislation.
Marriage has long been defined as between one man and one woman. To change this, even for legal benefits, could have devastating consequences that could affect society for years. These people do not care. They want what they want, and they want it now. I have seen these people preach tolerance only to curse and slander people who have tried to help them. Apparently they are the exceptions to their own rules of tolerance.
The more society cowtows to this crowd the worse off we are going to become. The Bible gave us standards, the Golden Rule for one, but these people want to be placed in a special class which is above that of everyone else. And they will do whatever they think it takes to get what they want.
We used to have standards. But with the systematic expulsion of God in the early 1960's and the subsequent questioning of every standard that had been accepted up until that time, the floodgates are being unleashed. It's time to get back to the tried and true standards. Failure to do that could doom us as a people. - Reply to this comment

- Plenty of christians accept that God created and loves gays and lesbians. Your intolerance is yours alone.
- You really take yourself too seriously. LGBT people do not your respect. We just want you to keep your nose out of bedrooms and your paws off of our constitutional rights.
Also, the very tired "marriage has long been defined as between one man and one woman" argument is so weak. Tradition has always been used to justify, well, tradition. Just because people have always done or believed things does not mean that these things should be impervious to change.
The only "devastating" consequence that would occur from "questioning stnadards" is that people would have to back up their beliefs with facts and analysis. Pointing to "God" is not analysis. It is just an attempt to curb debate.
- You say that gays and lesbians want approval of their lifestyle? Well, if their wanting the same rights as the rest of us is some kind of special treatment, then I think you should move to China.
I dont care what the sky fairy tells you. Keep you religion out of my politics. Hey, if you dont like it, dont be a gay or lesbian, but there is NO reason at all they should not have equal rights.
How do you feel about a black president? gheez.... Welcome to the 21st century.
- Do you notice when a Christian disagrees with a homosexual viewpoint there is the usual accusation of hate-monger Christian homophobe. Did it ever occur to anyone that when a homosexual disagreed with a Christian, using their own rules, the homosexual would be guilty of being a hate mongering Christianphobe?
- You are right. The Bible speaks of the time coming when man will say what God says is evil is good and what God says is good they say is evil. The anti-Christ BO has arrived and is sitting on his throne. But he doesn't realize that temporal throne he is on will burn and melt in the inferno of hell along with all those that say God is wrong.
- What will this JERK do next?? This is one very, scary, scary dude! I always believed I should support the President and my Country. I even expressed that during a visit to Norway after Obamba's election. I cannot, and will not do that any more. I am scared, very scared, for the future of our Country. Not because of this issue alone, but because of the obvious, unmistakeable, and accelerating trend toward socialism and dictatorship. The liberals will scoff, but that only makes me increasingly scared.

- This is a joke. First we have only Federal employees getting at least 4 weeks PAID leave because they choose to have children and yes it extends to the father as well if he is a federal employee and now this crap. Obama is becoming a disappoint to me as an American, a woman, an employee and a lesbian. He thinks by doing this it forgives his terrible oversight at not recalling the hateful Don't Ask Don't Tell Policy or by not giving more power to same-sex marriage, he is so, so wrong. Marriage is a union between two consenting adults and every state should have the same laws and regulations regarding marriage. We are all part of the United States aren't we? We are not like Europe, which is made up of distinctly different COUNTRIES and should establish their own laws and customs. But America is a nation of one and we are separated by bigotry, hate, ignorance and sadness. I often feel sad for all the millions of heterosexuals who fear their marriage is not strong enough to withstand another same-sex couple getting married. Without gays and lesbians being allowed to marry, the divorce rate among the pure htereo marriage hangs around 43%. So are you worried it might jump to 50% because husband Bill might be tempted by the couple next door named John and Larry? Weird ain't it? Let same-sex marriage happen, and be happy in your own life and let me be happy in mine. By-the-way, if you saw me you would never know I am a lesbian. Does that make a difference?

- Those who disagree with your post are being banned. CBS continues to demonstrate their anti-Freedom of speech agenda towards Conservatives.
Sick communists!
- Saturn, I agree with your comments. What I don't understand are people, including members of my family, who can't accept same sex marriage.
I especially agree with your comment about one law for all states.
One last comment, I hope that President Obama is not making these decisions because of campaign promises, but because they are the correct decisions. Saturn, I don't make decisions based on appearance, sexuality, or whatever, my decisions are made on the fact that we are all people pursuing happiness, and I will not be a detour to that pursuit.
- Good news for Chuck and Larry.
