toddsharafinski: It was caused by people thinking that ARM's were a good idea, who didn't dump these and get into a fixed. It was caused by lenders using stated income instead of proof of income, and giving people making 42K a yr, a loan for a 900K home. It was caused by Wall St. thinking that they could make a buck by packaging these mortgages and selling them to investors, who through greed, thought that the housing market would continue to inflate, it didn't. Wall St did not heed the warning it was given and the bubble burst. Now we have our spineless Congress compensating these people for their incompetence, all at the expense of the American taxpayer. Had the government truly wished to help this crisis, they would have purchased the bad mortgages, which is the underlying problem, and offered the homeowners a fixed they could afford, thus guarenteeing a return on the taxpayers money, not this flawed thinking of throwing good money after bad.

The subprime mortgage crisis was caused by the liberal push to "make housing more affordable". It was this crisis that caused AIG to experience the trouble it has. The liberal efing establishment should get there grubby hands off the banks and return to screwing up what they screw up best - government.

wondering if average american citizens are delusional in holding onto the belief of Duty, Honor, Country.

The American citizens have been delusional for decades now, they just get in that happy comfort zone and don't want to see what's really happening.

Tiny Tim needs to go and go soon! The only reason Obama is keeping him around is to have a scape goat to blame when Obama's policies do not work.

I do not really blame them for not suing. The contracts were completely clear that these fat cats were entitled to the cash, and I have little doubt many of them would have sued. The key will be to solve this going forward.

What about the 11 fat cats who took their "retention" bonuses and then QUIT!? Seems like a breech of contract suit is called for....

They won't return their bonuses in the interest of our country? Fine. Publish their names. They want to live as wealthy pariahs, the very least we can do is assist them. I feel zero sympathy for them. In fact, I'm very curious as to why this hasn't happened already?

Ah yes, the old blame game. Point a finger and guess who's at fault? They're all pointing fingers at each other and in the end it won't be anyone's fault. It will have just happened through political osmosis.

Bernanke said he asked that the payments be stopped but was told that they were mandated by contracts agreed to before the government seized control of AIG on September 16.

Get this the neocons can't break a contract with management but be it labor and they will change it destroy it and do what ever they want.

Had enough of neocons nonsense rebuild America take back the country no matter what. Then deal with the inbread rich morons once and for all.

wondering if congress is just powerless excepting when it comes to earmarks. wondering, too, if bernanke and geithner aren't really just puppets of large corporations and wall street. wondering if obama is just having a tough time getting past being over the top naive in thinking that everyone will do the right thing even though no one is looking. wondering who, except for the rich and powerful, has anything to do with running the usa. wondering if average american citizens are delusional in holding onto the belief of Duty, Honor, Country.
