Urging Speed To Heal "Sick" Economy, President-Elect Proposes $500 Tax Cuts For Most Workers, $100B For Businesses
- The point of CRA was to force banks to give loans to red lined districts if they were going to be allowed to expand. This would be risky loans and the first to go into default in hard times. These loans were pushed by neighborhood activists. That was a Democratic solution during the Carter years. In the 90''s those mortgages were securitized, bundled with good loans and sold. Clinton and His Treasury Secy embraced the repeal of Glass Stegal. Franks in 2005 stopped legislation proposed by the Bush Administration to regulate Fannie while taking campaign contributions from Fannie. For the last 2 years, Franks and Dodd, sweetheart mortgage from CountryWide, watched and did nothing about the subprime crisis. I think it is safe to say that the Democrats can share a major part of the blame in the subprime mess. Pelosi was wrong, it was not all the Republicans fault.

Clinton also stated that, while other countries also had weapons of mass destruction, Hussein is in a different category because he has used such weapons against his own people and against his neighbors.

- Bush WAS THE STUPID CHIMP who got fooled by SLICK WILLY.

Puhleeze. Bush misoverestimated himself. I don''t think he''s had any enterprise under his command that did not come out in worse shape after he was through. Iraq and Afghanistan, Katrina, the financial meltdown just happened to be the latest installments of this sordid story. - Reply to this comment

Well, we had teachers'' unions even back when we were producing the most number of college graduates. The most in the world. Not anymore. Our high school students are not even top 20 internationally. - Reply to this comment
- Well, Bill Clinton is being trashed again, what else is new? After digging us out of the hole that Daddy Bush dug for us and leaving us in the black, George spent all that and brought us to where we are today.

And you think we can continue to enjoy a high standard of living if we keep falling behind other countries in science and math? Do you know what parts of the U.S. are the poorest? Those where ignorance and low skill levels are endemic. Their intellectual skills are third-world level and their political leaders are no better than what you see in parts of the third-world. - Reply to this comment
- So why lie about WMDs? Why forge evidence? Why start a war based on manipulation of public opinion? Why didn''''''''t the previous presidents start this war and maybe could have done a better job? What stopped them?

Let me try an answer. I admit its speculative but consider:
The WMD were a ruse within the Sadam government that even Sadam thought was real. His government was very opressive and the way ahead was to make war-like promises which is what his underlings did. So far, we know that is true. After 9/11 our government stepped up its espionage efforts aroudn the world and found evidence that Sadam was buying materials from France and Germany to assemble WMD. So far, still true and well known. We also know that our stepped up espionage found documents internal to Sadam that described these WMD.
Now the speculation: In the frightened state our country was in at that time, did we (Bush and Cheney) overestimate the legitimacy of those stolen documents? The Bush haters will say he did but we have no way to know for sure. Our accusations without evidence are equally as wrong.
I dont think Bush has done a great job either. But if we want fairness we have to give it. - Reply to this comment
- nearly any ideas are better than giving billions to the people that made bad loans in the first place....why would anyone think that all of a sudden ...they can do better next time....but dont watch us,,, and,,, you can''t come back on us ....and you cant tell us what to do with it while we all pat each other on the back and pocket millions each.......It''s a friggin congresspiracy,,,and amounts to treason.

If you can''''t answer that question yourself, why the HELL are you even asking it?
Posted by TexHillGirl at 08:45 PM : Jan 05, 2009
Doesn''t mean the person I was having a conversation with couldn''t provide a meaningful response. But that''s the point. I don''t think anybody can. This non-answer demolishes his arguments. - Reply to this comment

We can do this by making our workers educated and skilled to compete in the global economy, achieve superior productivity, create wealth by innovation. We can make education an important goal in our spending priorities to create this workforce. - Reply to this comment
