Paulson Says $700B Plan Not Designed For Big Three, White House Noncommittal But Open To New Ideas
- I think the auto industry is very important to our nation and economy. I would love to be able to purchase a new well-designed AFFORDABLE and COMFORTABLE vehicle COMPLETELY made in the US that gets at least 35 mpg and has air conditioning. Bells and whistles are not important and can create future complications. We are still driving a 94 Buick and 87 Honda and both get over 35 mpg. Have shopped but not found a new car we want to buy. KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID

- ''Bob Lutz, G.M.''s vice chairman...has been quoted as saying that hybrids like the Toyota Prius ''make no economic sense.'' And, in February, D Magazine of Dallas quoted him as saying that global warming ''is a total crock of [expletive].''
These are the guys taxpayers are being asked to bail out.
And please, spare me the alligator tears about G.M.''s health care costs. Sure, they are outrageous. ''But then why did G.M. refuse to lift a finger to support a national health care program when Hillary Clinton was pushing for it?'' asks Dan Becker, a top environmental lobbyist.
Not every automaker is at death''s door. Look at this article that ran two weeks ago on autochannel.com: ''ALLISTON, Ontario, Canada--Honda of Canada Mfg. officially opened its newest investment in Canada--a state-of-the art $154 million engine plant. The new facility will produce 200,000 fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines annually for Civic production in response to growing North American demand for vehicles that provide excellent fuel economy.''

This is where all the current problems with our country stem from. The ideal of "me, me, me". Who cares anymore about fellow humans or our environment. - Reply to this comment
- I hate to see people lose their jobs but the auto makers knew all along that for environmental and economic reasons we needed to go in the direction of alternative fuels and more economic cars but they kept producing the big gas guzzlers and ignoring or shelving alternative fuel vehicles. They kept siding with the oil companies. All along they were digging their own grave and now they are screaming cause they have fallen in.
Most of the industries in this country survived because people had a little extra money in their pockets after they paid their bills and living overhead. The oil companies just stole every spare cent from the pockets of every hard working consumer in the country. Now no one can aford car payments, vacations, new TVs or any of the sevises. These companies are going belly up because of the greed and total lack of heart and foresight of the oil companies. - Reply to this comment

No more "bailouts". Period.
Why would anyone think it a good thing to bail out an ineptly managed industry that has been losing money for years, making cars and trucks that many people do not want to buy and built by people making upwards of $75 an hour with benefits.
Let the chips fall where they may. Someone will come up with a better idea and will overcome the downside.
Of course, Pelosi and Reid don''t want to lose those voters so they will let future generatiuons pay off those loans.
