CBSNews.com Analysis: The Keys To Deciphering The Presidential Election
- Becky:
On Socialism... I agree that taxes suck, but taxes do not equal socialism.
If you are proposing that we break from all the "socialist" practices of our country, you have a valid point. There was a time when folks bought a subscription to a fire station for protection. If a household had not purchased the protection, no fire station would not spit on it to put it out. We could return to a time when the "gubment" did not fund schools, and only those who could afford to PAY that money out of their incomes could afford to go. We could return to a time when only the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers and Carnegies and their cronies could send their kids to college. Maybe then you wouldn''t have to have suffered from "being around college campuses." There was a time when the vast majority of the elderly were the severely impoverished and lived in closets and ate dog food. There was time when we sent children with disabilities or birth defects (isn''t that one of the pillars of the McCain/Palin camp?) off to institutions instead of finding research-based, effective ways to educate and incorporate them into society.
You are correct. These things were all done away with by the institution of "social" programs. Be careful what you wish for. - Reply to this comment

Becky, have you ever been on the board of a company, or even more so, a charitable organization? If so, did you research the backgrounds of everyone on the board? If so, did you refuse to be a part of a cause you believed in because one of them had a shady background? Again, you are drinking the (fake) kol-aid. There is nothing to the claims. - Reply to this comment
- I can see only the most vicious and hateful McCain supporters are left grasping and gasping on here. For those on both sides who have been respectful and thoughtful contributors to these boards over the past year, I know that you have voted, or are in the process of voting. Thank you for participating. Regardless of who ended up winning this election we need to pull together as Americans, get behind our new POTUS, and address the issues facing our country.
We are so used to having deceitful criminal and divisive people in the executive branch that I know this will be difficult for some, but it is imperative we give the new POTUS every chance to prove he is who he claims to be, and that he is going to follow through with his promises.
Here''''s to America, the greatest country in the world. - Reply to this comment

all I know is I have done a lot of hiring, and presented with the resume''s there is no way I don;t hire Obama... unless of course I have some bias about him... hmmm.. what might that be.
There are more fscist policies on the right than there are socialist tenets in any of Obama''s policies. If you are worried about our government slipping into some other type of system, be worried about fascism. There is nothing in Obama''s policies that even hint of socialism. You are drinking the (fake)kool-aid. (I want to note that in no way do I believe McCain or Palin are fascist, just like I know Obama isn;t socialist. I simply used it as an example of how silly the thought is). - Reply to this comment
- Stratmaster2, what Obama''s experience tells me is that he is very smart and a great student. He is great at being philosophical. He can argue as an ACORN lawyer that poor people deserve mortgages better than anyone, I''m sure. I have been around college campuses all my adult life, and, yes, I have a real problem with those who are really smart philosophically but who have never built anything, just torn it down.
Why isn''t southern Chicago nirvana after his leadership? All the earmarks he''s fought for in his short tenure in the Senate?
I guess I revolt against socialism (it has failed worldwide, and I don''t think even Obama can make it work), and I love McCain and Palin because they do too. - Reply to this comment

- Vaughn Ververs writes: "Nobody needs to be reminded about the narrow split decision in 2000 and in 2004, George W. Bush just barely managed a majority in both."
Actually, I guess I need to be, as well as all the history books. Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000. - Reply to this comment

-US senate
-found time between all of that to be a community organizer on the streets of Chicago.
Sarah Palin experience:
-a member of the PTA
-Mayor of a podunk town, which she left in debt
-governor of a rural wilderness state which has less people in it than most Tier B american cities. - Reply to this comment
- "Both sides in this election (and isn%u2019t it telling that third party candidates have all but disappeared on all levels this year?) are predicting record turnout"
I was disgusted to read this comment. To suggest that third party candidates have all but disappeared is not only untrue, but reckless for a news organization. Just because YOU did not cover all six of the candidates who are on enough ballots to win 270 electoral votes does not mean they don''t exist. They ran hard, national campaigns, fighting against a media blackout. They were shut out of the debates, which are run by a private corporation of Democrats and Republicans.
There is another African American running for president, and she''s a woman. There are Hispanic Vice Presidential candidates. Ralph Nader campaigned in ALL 50 states. Any other candidates who did that?
Your readers depend on you to provide real information. Again, just because you deliberately blacked out 4 presidential candidates does not mean they are not there. They have NOT "all but disappeared". They have been systematically ignored by organizations like yours, robbing Americans of the choice we are supposed to have on Election Day. Shame on you. - Reply to this comment

so you are hoping for failure for your country? What an un-American traiterous approach. If we fail voer the next four years, it will most likely be too late for anyone to come in and salvage things. support the new POTUS, whoever it is. - Reply to this comment

- Obama Supporters: Let''s hope in the process but take nothing for granted! We must all be vigilant at the polls today! If anyone sees evidence of election fraud or voter suppresion make sure to contact The Raw Story Election Fraud Reporting Hotline so that all incidents are documented 1-866-our vote or 1-866-my vote1. Also notify any poll watchers who may be present as well as the media. We know Barack is significantly ahead in all the major polls but that doesn''t mean that McCain and the GOP won''t try to steal the election as happened in 2000. Be especially cynical of any reports of McCain ''just edging out'' Obama for the victory, especially if it''s in the wee, wee hours of the morning when everyone is asleep----My point is that It''s highly improbable/unlikely that McCain can win this election at all, considering all the poll(s) numbers Obama is putting up coupled with the fact that we supporters will indeed be putting out the vote! Also, go to www.LibertytreeFDR.org and sign the pledge to join the Nov.,5 peaceful, nation-wide pro-democracy,voter assembly protests in the event this stolen election scenario actually plays out. No More Stolen Elections! God Bless You one and all and pass the word around!

- Maybe I''m just not getting it! Why is he a ''war hero''? A veteran yes, but hero?? McCain & courage dose''nt seem to mesh! McCain & recklessness does! That''s why he was shot down. I don''t condemn him for giving more than his name, and rank to the North Vietnamese, agreeing to portray himself as a ''black pirate'' or some such thing or even trying to commit suicide twice. Under those circumstances who knows what someone is capable of? The FACT is, none of that represents a display of courage!! Obama, on the other hand, is displaying enormous courage by putting himself in the face of possible assassination every single day for the past two years and, quite likely, for the next eight!!

- I''m an Independent who voted for Hillary in the primaries. I definitely didn''t vote for Obama. If he wins, I hope she''ll reconsider running again and challenge him in 2012. She should buck the tradition and not wait. She would''ve been forced to wait long enough. Now that there''s been a two year run-up to today''s election, would-be candidates for 2012 more than likely are already planning their running strategies for 2012. The entire process has become too expensive and takes up too much of the electorate''s time in following. We need to change this.

That is hilarious. No one likes him? how old are you? as far as supporting him, lets see... several of the gOP have endorsed him, in addition to his own party who it appears will now have a real majority (vs. the bogus one everone ahs been claiming they have had) in the Senate.
From your wild claim of an Obama loss, I expect you will be changing your screen name again after today, huh? Unless you know of some election rigging we aren''t privvy to? - Reply to this comment
