I%u2019m confused, as always.

If the Democrats want to pass an emergency bail out plan, and the President said he wouldn%u2019t veto he measure, then how can the Republicans be holding it up? Don%u2019t the Democrats control both the House & Senate?

I%u2019m curious, does anyone at CNN have an answer?

---"Let the government assume the mortgages and give the homeowners a fixed rate mortgage. At least then we will see a return on the taxpayers monies, which will not happen if this bailout is given directly to Wall St."---

That''s another thing - the liquidity problem and the bad mortgages are related, but that doesn''t mean the bailout has to be.

The Government could help them out with liquidity (which would amount to far less than $700bil), and then attack the mortgage issue from a different angle - could they like track back the mortgages underlying the mortgage-backed securities and renegotiate them onto sounder footing? I mean yes, that would be cumbersome but so is a bill for $700,000,000,000.00 that we need to borrow from the Chinese to pay!!!!!

party politics are bad for the American people yet everyone is waving their little flags wearing their little party pins supporting the very people who have caused this mess by not doing their job in the first place because party has always come before country or people its all about corruption and greed from corporate America through Wall street and all the way through the halls of Congress to the oval office itself

Washington Mutual fell and the sun will still rise in the east. Let the banks who''s greed drove them to this point go under. Let the government assume the mortgages and give the homeowners a fixed rate mortgage. At least then we will see a return on the taxpayers monies, which will not happen if this bailout is given directly to Wall St.

Shoot, I just read something at Politico that said the O''Neill plan requires them to accurately value the junk securities too. Bad plan!

That''s where all the risk is getting injected into the process. Why not just let the corporations take the transactions off the books by putting them into a trust, we''ll broker the resale auctions for a percent of the cut. Much smaller payout, but no risk either.

If Wall St. needs money, why can''t we just lend it to them like we did with AIG at cost of borrowing from China plus like 5%. We all suffer through dollar deflation, but our 401ks are protected. And we only open ourselves up the the risk of them going bankrupt, just like Warren Buffett. Solves the confidence problem, doesn''t cause the market to bubble as high, but minimizes the inevitable burst that always follows a market flare not rooted in inherent worth.

I mean like what''s the big rush - last time we rushed on something that all the ''experts'' endorsed, we got Iraq.

WMD, WMD, WMD.

CRISIS, CRISIS, CRISIS.

Little liar boy Bush has cried wolf one too many times.

This is just another attempted plundering of the Treasury by the rich power elite.

Here''''s a list of senators and congressmen linked to the failing institutions and the money they''ve been bribed with to be in support of this giveaway/bailout/handout.

Not one dime for corporate socialism.

Vote all incumbents of both crooked parties out.

Take back our country from these criminals.

As an economist I can clearly state this $700 billion dollar bailout is absurd and I sincerely hope everyone emails their congressmen immediately to vote NO on this measure to come before Congress. We obviously have a market failure and our lack of oversight over the past decade has led us to this dire mess. However, everyone is acting out of panic and not thinking about the long term consequences. This bailout only benefits the institutions that got us here in the first place.

I suggest we let capitalism survive and play itself out. Institutions that engaged in poor or unethical business practices should be left to die. And those who continue to be strong will rise to the top even stronger. But we should also encourage Congress to: 1) Realize the government%u2019s first responsibility is to the taxpayer, not Wall Street. There are solutions being offered that would allow Wall Street to work out their problems rather than taxpayers bailing out Wall Street. 2) Impose transparency, oversight and market reform. Lack of oversight is one of the reasons we are in the crisis we are facing today. 3) Not reward Wall Street execs who got us into this problem. 4) Give tax relief that can help companies free up capital. We should temporarily suspend dividend payments by financial institutions and cut capital gains to encourage the market.

Let true capitalism thrive. The general taxpayer doesn%u2019t want this bill passed. Email or telephone your congressmen now and tell them NO!

nope little bud we take half this time half the next kinda keeps the ones left for next time to look for a job so we wont be flooding the job market all at once with bad prospects but if we voted those up now it would send a very clear message to the rest
