Palin would have been correct to say that Alaska produces just over 14 percent of all the oil produced in the U.S., leaving out imports and leaving out other forms of power. According to the federal government''s Energy Information Administration, Alaskan wells produced 263.6 million barrels of oil in 2007, or 14.3 percent of the total U.S. production of 1.8 billion barrels.

But Alaskan production accounts for only 4.8 percent of all the crude oil and petroleum products supplied to the U.S. in 2007, counting both domestic production and imports from other nations. According to EIA, the total supply was just over 5.5 billion barrels in 2007.

Furthermore, Palin said "energy," not "oil," so she was actually much further off the mark. According to EIA, Alaska actually produced 2,417.1 trillion BTUs [British Thermal Units] of energy in 2005, the last year for which full state numbers are available. That''s equal to just 3.5 percent of the country''s domestic energy production.

And according to EIA analyst Paul Hess, that would calculate to only "2.4 percent of the 100,368.6 trillion BTUs the U.S. consumes."

Palin didn''t make clear whether she was talking about Alaska''s share of all the energy produced in the U.S. or all the energy consumed here. Either way, she was wrong.

"But it''''s very unbecoming to a political figure like John McCain whose flag was planted long ago in ground that was about ''''straight talk'''' and integrity."

The ''Straight Talk Express'' derailed a looooong time ago. Such a shame--I used to have some respect for him--no more.

curse, selling oil to other countries does not sound right to me but we have not nationalized the oil production like Venezuela, Saudi, Iran or Russia.

This phony investigation is headed by a DEMOCRAT in the Alaska legislature and is being helped by other disgruntled legislators who got put in their proper place by reforms initiated by Palin. This entire "investigation" is nothing more than retribution against a maverick who tried to clean-up the widespread corruption in the Alaska government.

Knowing that, any rational person would just ignore this politics-as-usual slime.

Of course, "rational" doesn''''t apply to the loony-left liberal media.

If it was ''retribution'', then it would be against the Republicans in Alaska that she supposedly fought against. The Democrats up there would have loved her for that.

Your logic has more holes than my spaghetti colander.

Thanks for playing, try again!

GOP strategiest: McCain will pay for all his lying

Harsh words from a Republican strategist in a NYT article about - you guessed it - McCain''s now-serial lying.

"The last month, for sure, I think the predominance of liberty taken with truth and the facts has been more McCain than Obama," said Don Sipple, a Republican advertising strategist....

Mr. Sipple, the Republican strategist, voiced concern that Mr. McCain''s approach could backfire. "Any campaign that is taking liberty with the truth and does it in a serial manner will end up paying for it in the end," he said. "But it''s very unbecoming to a political figure like John McCain whose flag was planted long ago in ground that was about ''straight talk'' and integrity."

Ioweign, McCain said 20% of US production.

That is true as Alaska produces about 1M barrels of our 5M barrels of daily production.

wonder, to me empathy or competition have a lot to do with age and where you are on the race to the top of the ladder.

Now, I am more about empathy but I still like a good challenge.

As discussed earlier, Republicans are more focused on supporting culture as they believe it is the foundation of our country.

Democrats usually look to government to fix all ills.

I prefer limited government and strong family values.
