How are you going to create jobs with money saved from Iraq?
Posted by WellHell3 at 07:14 PM : Aug 23, 2008

We have a multitude of unmet needs in this country. Healthcare, investment in green technology, rebuilding and upkeep of hard infrastructure to name a few.

And I ask it, because it seems that any money saved from not having war in Iraq...should be going to pay off the debt we have already accrued against it. And I don''t consider it to be money we have to invest in something else.

Jon, I would agree with you if the money was remaining in the US but it isn''t.

It is like a thermo problem where the energy leaves the box. If it leaves the box it is gone forever...... That will mean to us that we will have less wealth to build on in future years and America will have slower growth. Same thing happened to UK until they found oil.

We don''''t really have a good definition of success, and if we did, there is no way to say it''''s a good thing from our point of view. Meanwhile, we are losing soldiers, we are degrading our military power, and we are spending $10/month on top of $700 billion already spent. That''''s money that can create jobs in the U.S. and keep the value of the dollar high.

We spend $700B PER YEAR on imported oil. That money is GONE. It is four times the amount we are spending on the war.

That $700B is wealth lost forever and is a bigger harm to our future than the debt or the war.
Posted by donbl1 at 07:09 PM : Aug 23, 2008

The $700B does not include interest payments on it. The bill for imported oil is an economic cost with a tangible productive return as without it our economy will shut down. Iraq does not have a productive return now or in the forseeable future.

Tucker, Reagan Democrats ARE Democrats and vote in the Democratic Primary. They voted for Hillary mostly.

They are mainly Scots Irish and blue collar.

BTW, McCain is Scots Irish.......

Just saw on MSNBC that the reason Biden was selected because he could draw working class Americans (i.e., Reagan Democrats).

The problem is that Biden got less than 1% of the primary vote and no delegates in three tries for President. He did not attract anyone!

jon, the problem with conservation is that every barrel we do not buy is bought by China or India as they are still growing rapidly.
Posted by donbl1 at 06:51 PM : Aug 23, 2008

If it is a problem, then it could be a lot worse. Not having to burn all that oil in the U.S. means a lot of dollars staying here. We are still the country that accounts for 25% of world oil consumption. Conservation must start somewhere.

Tucker, if Iraq remains a democracy, it will be the only one in that area......... and, it will have a large well equipped army when this is all over.

We will just have to watch and not declare failure before time plays out.
