Actually, the key to what you just said is "made his fortune".
I personally think that Mr. Pickens has recognized a potential threat to his various cash cows and is trying to "head it off at the pass", as a Texan like him would say.
His proposed replacement energy infrastructure would guarantee the continuation of a commercial source SELLING you energy.
What is he trying to head off, you ask?
Every American having his or her own solar (or wind, as the case may be) energy installation and getting energy "for free".
You have to understand that even as T. Boone Pickens is running those seemingly "good-hearted" commercials, he has been attempting to buy up all the water rights that he can in parts of Texas so he can monopolize those.
Pickens is smart - that is how he got rich. Three ways to stay rich - and absolutely control the American people - are to gain a complete or near monopoly on food, water, or energy.

Oh, I don''t know that the Democrats would ever want to use tolls - I think that is what those Republicans who lust after the idea of privatizing our roads see as their personal private tax on the Average American.
lolll...wait - they don''t call it a "tax" - they call it "profit".

If we had roads filled with hybrid cars, the gas tax income would go away anyway because they burn less or, in some cases, no gas at all.

OK - so we''ll raise the income taxes on everybody making more than $250,000 gross annually to make up for the lost gasoline taxes.

About 95% of us out here do believe cheap gas is our birthright and we want a government who can supply it to us.
To stay strong, America needs short term gas price reductions, and in the long term more drilling, more nuclear plants, more wind power, more coal production, and more hybrid cars and trucks.

- lolll...ya know what amuses me the most about Republicans?
They CONSTANTLY yammer on about "individual responsibility" and how awful "entitlement programs" like Medicare/Medicaid are and how "Social Security should be privatized".
OK, then...so untold hundreds of thousands of Americans have gone to work and worked HARD for 20, 30, and even more years to EARN pensions and retirement health care packages that were promised to them.
And what happened?
The corporations, CEOs, boards of directors, and stockholders who make up the backbone of the Republican Party simply said "Sorry, we are not fulfilling those promises.".
What kind of schizophrenia is that? Only people who are not wealthy have to keep promises, live up to contractual obligations, and obey the law?

Please young people just look what would happened to your money you invested in social security in todays market. You would not have one dime to live on. - The "Gas Tax Holiday", a smoke and mirrors gimmick that doesn''''t really solve the gas price problem, creates another problem by taking money away from much needed maintenance of roads and bridges, but gives willing Americans a psychological boost.
