When Clinton (and others) said that he had paid down the national debt, that was patently false-- the national debt went up every single year. What Clinton did do was pay down the public debt. But he paid down the public debt by borrowing far more money in the form of intergovernmental holdings.

Interestingly, this most likely was not even a conscious decision by Clinton. The Social Security Administration is legally required to take all its surpluses and buy U.S. Government securities, and the U.S. Government readily sells those securities--which automatically and immediately becomes intergovernmental holdings. The economy was doing well due to the dot-com bubble and people were earning a lot of money and paying a lot into Social Security. Since Social Security had more money coming in than it had to pay in benefits to retired persons, all that extra money was immediately used to buy U.S. Government securities. The government was still running deficits, but since there was so much money coming from excess Social Security contributions there was no need to borrow more money directly from the public. As such, the public debt went down while intergovernmental holdings continued to skyrocket.

The net effect was that the national debt most definitely did not get paid down because we did not have a surplus. The government just covered its deficit by borrowing money from Social Security rather than the public .

The Republicans have driven us deeper in debt than the Democrats ever did. What is it now, 9 trillion and counting? Bill Clinton actually left with a budget surplus.

No, the pervert didn''t leave with a budget surplus. Check out Lieberman/Warner bill circulating in Congress. If it passes it will cost 2.2 trillon dollars and raise everyone''s energy, electricity, gas through the roof. Dimnowits, iie through their teeth and think everyone believes them. Effendi Snob-oma, boilerplate liberalism and a Second Jimmah Carter term.

Effendi Snob-oma, a boilerplate liberal politician with a liberal agenda of tax and spend and tax and spend. He wants YOU. Your MONEY and Your HOPES. He''''s another Washington politician with a good pitch. Some ole, same ole liberal - Second Jimmah Carter term.

Tell me, Mudrose, the virtues of borrow and spend vs. tax and spend. They both slow our economy. The current neo-con group has mangled this budget no worse than the most left-leaning Democratic administration and have run up record deficits. How do you justify that to yourself? By simply ignoring the facts?

We''ve witnessed a huge transfer of wealth from the middle class to the upper class of our society. And the hopes of millions of unemployed have been put on hold. The "liberals" did not do that ... this time. Neither extreme has all the answers. In fact, the extreme positions offer very few real solutions. There is a middle ground where reasoned thought and discussion exists. It''s called non-partisan politics, which both candidates claim to embrace. Let''s hope whoever the winner is can pull it off. Save the name calling for the simpletons'' debate.

If Barack Obama chooses Hillary Clinton as his VP he will have the best support and best chance to win in November. She adds experience to the ticket.

If Barack Obama does not choose Hillary Clinton as his VP, she could always run as an independent, like Joe Lieberman did. She could also encourage her supporters to mount a write-in campaign for her. Everybody can see how many millions have voted for her. She has a huge following.

Looks to me like Hillary Clinton would give Barack what he needs on his ticket, exactly. Compared to her, Joe Biden, John Edwards and the others on his list are lightweights.

How about Jimmy Carter as Obama''s VP? Jimmy only got one term as Pres, you know, but he gained invaluable insights into the Iranian mind, plus he has invaluable knowledge in rebuilding that could be immediately applied to New Orleans. C''mon we''re talking a Georgia plantation owner and a black man on the same ticket, how much better can it get?
