It is perfectly true that an Iraq withdrawal will require something very painful: admitting a colossal strategic mistake. This is the #1 unbearable disgrace for Republicans and all other core backers of the war and occupation. The #2 disgrace would be payment of reparations to Iraq through a UN or World Bank trust. #3 would be the outrage of the post-occupation Iraqi government resolving the oil issue on its own terms, possibly contracting French, Russian, and Chinese firms, while leaving US or UK firms on the sidelines.

Self-denial, vanity, fear to face the music, and greed are at play. It has nothing to do with US security. The fiasco has made us less secure, drained lives and money, and now we are the laughingstock of much of the world.

Don''t believe in polls? Well, how about the value of the US dollar on world exchanges?

Let Iraqis rule Iraq, whether by federation, partition, or unitary state. Any model we impose will crumble the day we leave, whether that occurs now or in 100 years. Iraq will not be pro-US, pro-Israel, or pro-anything we favor so long as we occupy them, or as long as we contrived to have privileged access to their oil.

Medieval Europeans wasted 250 years on their venture. Better to learn from them, plus from Britain''s troubles in Iraq in the 1920s onward, rather than repeat a futile imperial exercise.

The trillion plus we waste in Iraq could have done so much more for our security or economy if spent on just about anything else.

%u201CIn the remarks, Obama said soaring gas prices were the latest manifestation of a Washington establishment that won''t tackle the problems facing most consumers, and that he would bring needed change.%u201D
So he%u2019s gonna bring change to Congress, that only a person IN Congress can do, but he will do it after leaving Congress%u2026%u2026

"I''ve been a strong supporter of ethanol," Obama said, noting that demand for corn to make ethanol is driving up food prices. "Corn-based ethanol is a transitional technology."

So it%u2019s ok to drive up food prices around the world hurting everyone for transition%u2026%u2026. ( it also extremely lowers mileage).

"But the truth is, there is no easy answer to our energy crisis, and we need a president who is going to be straight with us about that," Obama said

So he should be elected so he can be truthful and say, this is the way it is, deal with it%u2026%u2026 Not fix any problems but tell us as we all know, were screwed%u2026

He says Washington is the problem, well I hate to tell ya Obama, but you are part of Washington and part of the problem%u2026

He talks in circles NEVER giving an answer, and says nothing. A true politician%u2026

Suspending the gas tax for the summer is the stupidest idea McCain has had. Ooooo, a whole 15 cents off of $3.75/gallon, that only means $3.60/gallon. Plus, that $10 million it''s suppose to save the American people is $10 million that doesn''t go to repairing our roads. Clinton shows her level of intelligence by going along with it.

bgwinnett--HMS HOOD and VICTORY, weren''t rushed into battle half-finished...HMS PRINCE OF WALES was...and then lost in the East due to incompetence at Admiralty. This, like the loss of the legions in the Teutoburger Wald, has always disturbed me.

jerryomara - Judging on what happened to England when it was in the Euro''s precursor the ERM (nicknamed the "Eternal Recession Machine in the UK). I don''t think that they will be joining the Euro for a while yet.

You can roll your own Bush tax cut:

1) Get a $1000 cash advance on your credit card.
2) Spend $500.
3) Give $500 to your boss.

Wow... this guy is brilliant! Why didn''t someone else realize that the answer to all of our problems is to just write a law that raises fuel efficiency standards?! Just raise the standard to 1,000,000 mpg, and it would magically make all cars run forever on one gallon! The we could all be free!!!! yay!!!!

All you even need to hear about this story is summed up in one line from the 15th paragraph (well buried) above:

"In the speech, Obama called for a windfall profits tax on oil companies, with the money used to help consumers pay utility bills."

OK, so he helps pay utiliity bills for the people already being given hand-outs by the liberals, and forces the rest of us to eat up the tax increase through even higher gas prices.

Way to go Democrats, the best P.O.S.'' money has bought.

Ahhh ---progress.........

got to love it!

Hopefully progressively using less and less gas and oil.

Electricity is the new gas....the only energy necessary...........

President Carter in the 80%u2019s had installed an array of solar electric panels on the White House grounds.

I often wonder what the world would be like had America followed President Carters renewable energy example back in the 80%u2019s.

Obama blames Washington for the high gas prices knowing dam well that the CEO''s have given themselves
billions in bonus''s.

Far be it for Obama to bite the hands that feed him. With all the money the oil companys has launderd through their employees to him, of course he wouldn''t be critical of them.

It''s 3am, the phone rings...an Exxon CEO answers the phone and hears, "This is Barry, I''v been a good boy today, may I have some more money?"
