I love those EURO-CENTRIC arguments. We should speak the language of Britain - no we should speak the language of Spain!

Sorry the only "universal" language I can think of is Math and there are WAY TOO MANY math illiterates in this nation - From the President on down.

There IS a reason our forefathers neglected to name a "national" tongue. They believed in FREEDOM.

That said, it appears that English got the jump when they controlled commerce and their "colonies" carried on the tradition. It''s pretty difficult for a company to do business beyond a small area without some ability to speak English now.

English has been the DE-FACTO language of business ever since. Maybe if another country dominates business for a couple hundred years they will win the language war but I suspect tradition has set in.

Personally, I believe the Native American languages have more right to be "official" but apparently conquest destroyed most of them.

I was born here and I speak three languages one of course is English. But some Americans think that everyone should speak just one language.

Oh my, what will we do? People speaking Spanish? Don''t they know this is AMERICA? Why when we brought the slaves over here, did we allow them to continue speaking that African language? NO we didn''t. Because we are superior and what we say goes. Don''t these people know that when God founded this country He did so at the expense of all other languages? Except German, because well, they did insist on having the Constitution translated into German for all of those Pennsylvania "Dutch" who didn''t know enough to understand that God had chosen English. But that''s okay, German is also a superior language. So we won''t talk about those Amish teaching their kids in German. And don''t these dummies know that God spoke to his prophets in English? No, in fact in South America and Mexico most of the Native Languages are spoken today. Spanish is the language of the majority, but unlike the US, the Spanish didn''t force the Native culture to learn Spanish and forget their own language. Several languages are now in written form and many Americans even study them. They include Zapoteca, Maya, Nahuatl, Tarahumara, and more.

In contrast, the US separated Indian children from their families and forced them to learn English. They disconnected them completely from their parents, grandparents and the like. The English only standard is so ethnocentric that it literally has wiped out thousands upon thousands of beautiful languages. It divided families and today the tribes are loaded with problems and no one seems to understand the harm that was done to them.
