Congressional Leaders Seek Allies Across The Aisle After President Vetoes Kids' Insurance Bill
- so he shall return it with the objection "I don''''t believe the American people want this, even though you were elected on this as well as a couple other premises" or "I don''''t believe you can give health care to those who cannot afford it", or I don''''t believe you have a right to this"
My assertion is this is not the president''''s job.

No, like I said (but you apparently didn''t read) is that the President is in NO WAY anywhere limited to the reasons he can veto something. He could say a little birdie told him to and then it would be up to the Congress to override the veto. That''s why it'' sset up the way it is. But if you want to take another approach, he could point to the Constitution and say "There''s nothing in the Constitution that says anybody has a RIGHT to free health care". Plus, not all the American people want this, and for valid reasons that you choose to ignore. This country is not run by "majority rules". - Reply to this comment

Nowhere in the description of the powers is he given any more power than to "recommend" according to judgment of expediency.
The power of veto is used to shape the evolution of legislation, but there is no provision that specifically allows vetoes based on some vague and nebulous "belief".

Your false claims that he is forcing his beliefs on any one is laughable. Your lack of understanding of the Constitution is also laughable:
Article I, section 7 - "Every bill which shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate, shall, before it become a law, be presented to the President of the United States; if he approve he shall sign it, but if not he shall return it, with his objections to that House in which it shall have originated, who shall enter the objections at large on their journal, and proceed to reconsider it."
There''s all that power you say doesn''t exist, or want to redefine to match what you want it to mean. He only needs to say what his reasons are, not qualify them according to some non-existent set of criteria.- Reply to this comment
Bu$h just asked Congress for over 190 billion dollars for Iraq. The bill for Bu$h''''s little war will be at least a trillion dollars.
If we can afford that, why can''''t we afford to help poor kids get health care here at home?- Reply to this comment
- The Democrats are so afraid of making a decision because they may be criticized that nothing will happen. Just so much hot air adding to global warming. Scrap the present government and start over with a group that care about the country and not their sound bites and ratings. The present gutless wonders make me sick.

- I didn''''t know you were so in love with the rich! Or is it the money you love? Oh well, the way you tell it, nobody really needs the middle class, let alone the poor. In your "reality" only the rich have any purpose in this world, and so you bow down and worship them. Good job, your reward will be where your heart is.

I was only stating a fact to refute another''s comment that the middle class pay 90% of the taxes. I don''t know where you get all that other stuff about me loving money or the rich or what you think my "reality" is or what I am "telling" or even what "it" is , or that I would worship anybody. But then you try criticize me for those things that you just made up?. Good job yourself. - Reply to this comment

- Lovely, blog killed. Short/sweet. Killing children''s programs, kills the reason for enacting them, kills children! Oppressed country is in your own backyard, I live 40 mins from the Ranch. Come see a middle income family like mine. Bottom line..is YOUR child a $ sign? Healthy? Need resources to learn how to hold a spoon? Need assistance to work? Come visit my house..see what it''s like to live in a community with a child not "status quo." Who will do without if budget/program cuts continue. GET EDUCATED in what an entire community is made of.

- I am a mother with a profoundly handicapped child with a rare metabolic disease and premalignant melanomas and tumors. I have a 13 year old son. I am 51 and on disability with a husband who is a civil servant has to work 3 jobs to keep our family afloat. Do we need our state/federally funded programs in the state of Texas in place? You bet your boots. Mr. Perry and I got into a debate on this during a local meeting...he yelled at me. He did not want to respond to the question of what HE was going to do as a rep to help. We need equitable disbursement of state funding to programs not cuts, 1 case worker having to travel through up to 3-4 counties to identify and get children and families onto programs?" I would invite Mr. Bush into a middle class home and SEE it or spend an afternoon with a single mother of five, one 2 year old home on hospice,no nursing coverage. $300 mo my state disability. PERRY CUT OFF agencie and released 1700+ kids waiting for programs. Agency ethics/morale nil. Other oppressed lands?take care of your own back yard. I''m a neighbor, 40 mins from the ranch. Killing childrens'' programs KILLS the reason for creating them, KILLS children. Is YOUR child a dollar sign, healthy, comfortable home or sitting on family oil wells? Check out your community. Do you need resources to teach a child to hold a spoon! There are learning disabiities from top to bottom. GET EDUCATED!!!

REPUBLICAN LOGIC:
Borrowing one trillion dollars from China to pay for a war that should have never been is a great idea.
Subsidising health care for the children of the working poor here at home is a very bad idea.- Reply to this comment

How much will borrowing a trillion dollars from China to finance a war that should have never been raise ours, our childrens, and our grandchildrens taxes?
Remember there''s interest involved. Also factor in the health care expence of every injured vet and fatherless child resulting from this war.- Reply to this comment
- Bush Doesn''t hate Poor Kids just Greedy Democrats that want your tax $$.
If the Democrats had left the bill alone then it would have been signed, again. BUT Noooooo They needed to screw with it + increase your taxes.
Is that what you want? - Reply to this comment

- The top 1% of earners pay 21% of all the federal taxes!
The top 10% pay just under half, at 48.5%! You people are delusional!

- "ex7ec7u7tive (%u012Dg-z%u0115k''y%u0259-t%u012Dv) pronunciation
n.
1, ... 2, ... 3. The branch of government charged with putting into effect a country''s laws and the administering of its functions.
adj.
1,... 2,... 3. Of or relating to the branch of government charged with the execution and administration of the nation''s laws."
That means doing what has been decided by the legislature to do, not refusing on the basis of "belief".
But have you presumed to redefine the meaning of the word executive to suit you own premise? - Reply to this comment
- I have a better idea, read article 2 of the constitution, under "powers of the president" and tell us where he is given the right to force his "beliefs" on others. Such power is not invested in the office by constitutional law, so there is no need to prove that it is not.
Nowhere in the description of the powers is he given any more power than to "recommend" according to judgment of expediency. In short, how to accomplish most efficiently that which the majority of the legislature has decided to do, not how to circumvent or deny it.
The power of veto is used to shape the evolution of legislation, but there is no provision that specifically allows vetoes based on some vague and nebulous "belief", especially when, as in this case the "believer" has often been proven exactly wrong.
What more, history and sheer common sense should lead to the understanding that when "belief" is the only reason given, its usually because there is no other factual reason. - Reply to this comment
- Maybe Bush will get sick and die in office. America cannot afford to keep this man around. Mr.Bush is a budget buster, not poor sick children.
