"Oh holy guacomole! Is there nothing the liberal news media won''''t do to slam a GOP candidate?"-mike71067

If you read the piece, it''s not a slam. The only two people quoted are Giuliani and the owner of the store. The piece is so glowing it might as well have been written by the Giuliani campaign.

"As someone who has been to 34 countries, I know of what you speak. People in Italy and France and Spain are going to assume I will order from them in THEIR language, not MY language."

As someone who has been to not quite 34 countries, I am amazed you would make this statement. In fact, what most amazes me as I travel abroad is how many people around the world speak English. I speak only English and have yet to not be able to order in a restaurant. And I have never experienced hostility for not speaking the local language. I heard a joke while in Coast Rica. What do you call someone who speaks two languages? Answer: bilingual. What do you call someone who speaks three languages? Answer: trilingual. What do you call someone who speaks only one language? Answer: An American!

Parrots7, you are 110% correct. Especially when you point out foreign travel. As someone who has been to 34 countries, I know of what you speak. People in Italy and France and Spain are going to assume I will order from them in THEIR language, not MY language. We have every right to expect the same in the USA. The day we lose our language, which is English, our culture and country will evaporate, and become more like India, a loser country that tries to sanction hundreds of languages and is little better than 4th-world. I suspect most of the lame liberals here who look for every opportunity to scream "racist" at someone have never stepped out of this country. They live in a fantasy la-la land of emotions, constantly thinking how things "should" be, rather than how they are.

thgdriver, none of those are States. Not one. We''re talking about the USA here. The "S" in USA stands for States. You people who go through life holding up the exceptions, rather than the rules, are pathetic, as well as very bad debaters.

I live outside of Philadelphia.

I think I''ll go visit this Vinny Ravioli moron soon. First I''ll order in French, then Spanish, and then German. I''ll even order in Italian, but this idiot won''t understand that either, even though he tells all his Guido buddies he''s an "Italian American".

What''s pathetic is that idiots like this meathead are the one''s who complain about imigrants who speak poor or no English, but they themselves speak horrendous English. These Vinny Spaghettis make Rocky sound like Anthony Hopkins. I say we get rid of all of them.....whatever it takes.

Oh holy guacomole! Is there nothing the liberal news media won''t do to slam a GOP candidate? "Rudy Visits Controversial Cheesesteak Shop". Just what in the hell exactly is a "controversial cheesesteak shop"? Come on! Are they serving abortion sandwiches? Are they asking, "Do you want medical marajuana with that?" Get real, and please report only REAL news stories.

This is America, not some third world entity that you Lefties and Neo-Fascists with your appeasing terrorists and open borders rhetoric want . . . Till then, It''''s our country - you speak English here, or get out.
Posted by Draftreid at 08:49 AM : Oct 02, 2007

Sorry, Draftreid, it''s MY country, and I will kick your stupid racist little butt into oblivion before I get out. Now, go school yourself on the difference between a "lefty" and a "fascist," so you can stop looking so ignorant.

I know you desperately want to show how sensible your views are (...) diversity (...) legally (sic) - when in fact some of these people you''''d call Illegal Immigrants have always owned the land and have been here (...) RELOCATE ....

*****

I think the primary thread that has resulted from this story is about whether a busy American shop owner is entitled to want people to speak English when they order food.

Given that the fellow lives in an English-speaking nation, I don''t see that as being an unreasonable request.

I do see psuedo-intellectual babble sprinkled with words like "diversity", "racism", "relocate", and "illegal" as being nothing more than an attempt to obfuscate the logic and wisdom behind a millennium-old saying:

"When in Rome, do as the Romans do.".

I''m not in Mexico, or Iran, or Somalia, or wherever - I''m in America. If - and "somebody" refers to an immigrant, not a tourist - somebody orders something from me or I wish to order something from somebody or tell somebody driving a taxi to slow down, it is just plain common sense that I should be able to speak the language of the land and that they should be able to comprehend me.

All arguments to the contrary are merely the warping of liberalism from a desire to prevent racism into tilting at windmills, to borrow a phrase, simply for the pleasure of the joust.

Perhaps if you were to specifically point out exactly where, in my comment, I insinuated ANYTHING, I could respond with wording you could understand more clearly.

BTW children can read/understand even the (intentionally) misspelled words you use in your comments too.

Do I EVER get tired of that specious argument.

Hey, the Americas used to be just a part of Pangaea - maybe we should scrap all human languages and talk dinosaur, eh?

Nowhere in my comment did I mention any political party, and I certainly did not suggest that Democrats alone were responsible for the immigration problem.

Jumping to conclusions (assuming) is hazardous at best.

Hows come if I want people to speak English in America, that makes me a rascist, but if I insist upon people speaking English in Mexico, that makes me an "Ugly American"?

Hypocrisy at its finest...

Did ya know Spanish is a descendent of Latin? That is what amused me as I was taking Latin; if I spoke Spanish, I was really speaking Italian.

Somos arrepentidos que usted se puso entiende usted NECESITA aprender a hablar ingles.
(We are sorry you dont understand, you NEED to learn to speak english).

To you and all other white sheeted racist slime: There are a million other places (restaurants) that don''t care what language a person speaks, and will gladly do business with their multilingual clients. The rest of you hate mongers can find refuge where this Rudy finds his. As for Spanish, Spanish has been spoken in the United States long before the country was ever founded, from coast to coast, and has been continually a part of the US culture since.

Pero con respecto a tu estupido intento de escribir en espanol, debes a lo menos tratar de impresionarnos con lo que es gramaticamente correcto. Lo unico que hiciste es demostrar tu estupidez. Ciao, mensa!

HOW MANY OTHER LANGUAGES HAVE YOU HAD TO LEARN .... why are you so DUMB... I bet the Racist and Redneck end to this argument always resort to Fear instead of common sense ...
Posted by parrots7 at 10:43 AM : Oct 02, 2007

Let me think...when I was stationed in Thailand, I had to learn enough Thai to get by; when I was stationed in Korea, I had to learn enough Korean to get by; when I was stationed on Okinawa, I had to learn enough Japanese to get by; oh yeah, and when I was stationed in Georgia I had to learn to pretend to like grits.

Dumb, racist (wish you''d told me earlier - if I''d known I was a racist I would have insisted all the people in those other countries speak English) redneck that I apparently am, I thought it was important to protect Americans from losing their national identity to invasion.

Invasions come in all shapes and forms.

Correct! Our borders need a modern day great wall of china with armed outposts every 100 meters. With minefields in front and shoot to kill ROEs.

Ah let me guess, you were once a part of the Stasi? It figures that you Schweinehunden now try to spread your hatred everywhere you go.
