It is a holdover from the slavery days. Back then many white slaveowners would force themselves on young slavegirls. Resulting children born were half black/half white, but for purposes of law (law of those times)the children were labeled black/negro and then pressed into slavery. Often if any black blood was in the system, the child was called black or high-yellow and pressed into slavery. Many times the slaveowners would father their own black grandchildren. Slaves were kept as chattel/property they were often legally listed as farmstock. By fathering more halfbloods, any slaveowner could increase his stock-holdings without the cost of purchasing more slaves.
