I thought your post was so correct and want to thank you for expressing it so clearly I never thought about authoritarians but that is what it is for sure I always learn and that is a good thing , that is what I love about this post. I love a lot of the things I learn.

This would be the same intelligence that got us in Irag looking for WMD's. Bush wants to monitor anyone or everyone for up to 6 months at his discretion. Then he says quickly vote on his bill. If the House votes on this bill they don't have a hair on their sas.

I agree as a Viet Nam Vet with this:

The Iraqi parliament is taking vacation in August.
The U.S. Congress is taking vacation in August.
No One has to take the heat but the soldiers.

How do you feel about this forecast?

"The Senate, in a high-stakes showdown over national security, has voted to temporarily give President George W. Bush expanded authority to eavesdrop on suspected foreign terrorists without court warrants."

Temporarily???? Can you kill someone..."temporarily" ?

Are not the consequences of this "temporary" authority-- of this magnitude?

This ...fellow...fixed two elections.

Wake up now.

The only little detail that you fail to grasp is that we are not in a war. Just an illegal occupation of Iraq. And that makes you argument void.

You are right about that and while our Freedoms are being taken away to "Protect" us from a group that these people told us nearly 6 years ago weren't important anymore. Guess what? That same group is now as strong or stronger than ever. Also, we were told we'd fight them over there so we wouldn't have to fight them here. Guess what? We're having our freedoms taken away BECAUSE... we have to fight them here. Talk about complete Incompetence and failure?

They are having a rally all over for the Impeachment of Cheney so wear orange that day ad just stand outside with a sign HONK IF YOU WANT CHENEY IMPEACHED. The day is 08-08-07. Get your friends together and lets see. Dennis Kucinich has 100,000 names so far on a petition and will be put in the congressional record.

Republicans need not worry about whether the House conforms to the will of teh Senate and teh President.

George Bush will do what he wants anyway. He is not about to start obeying the law now when all he has to do is refuse to allow anyone to testify against him and everyone will just throw up their hands and bow down.

There's a concept that liberals and folks in our corrupt liberal MSM wolfpack press need to start "warming up" to and that is during "war" Security Trumps Liberty. That's how its been for every war this nation has been in.

Dear phil-in-Fin, did you read the story? CONGRESS (you know who they are?) voted to give our intelligence agenicies this power.

Well, I read "SENATE" so far ... Let's hope congress will be a bit wiser. Otherwise, if they give Bush an enabling act like the German Reichstag gave to Hitler in 1933, be ready to use McVet's favourite words in postings ...

"Al Qaeda is not going on vacation this month," said Sen. Republican leader Mitch McConnell. "And we can't either until we know we've done our duty to the American people."

I don't know where Al Qaeda would be going on vacation but we know that in July 2001, 2 months before 911, Bin Laden was in an American hospital in Dubai and got a visit of the CIA. Interesting vacation, indeed. Maybe it's better when Al Qaeda is
not going on vacation ...

McVet Your Post was a breath of fresh air thank you. After, without mentioning any names, but you and I know who, I am exhausted trying to get my side in in some way. I know I am not always right that is why I love to read these posts I learn and get another perspective. Some people will not hear anything they are always right. I am glad I am Independent and can try to see. I have a hard time with these neocons I tell you The more I try to listen the madder I get because it is all bigotry to me. I hope I am not wrong in my assumptions. If I am I will hear about it. Thanks enjoy your comments.

The positive outlook on this is that it is an interesting time for the student of history. The United States government is embracing an authoritarian model, and it is happening in a slow and steady manner, not like a sudden revolution but more like a death from 1000 cuts. Democrats and Republicans don't agree on much, but what the both agree on is that they want more power and control and the ability to suppress and keep the population in fear. Very interesting time in history. Where will it lead? Will the rich eventually become disgusted at themselves and give us back our country and share the power? Or will they escalate their hawking of fake fears and escalate their spying, suppression and intimidation until we are in fully flowering oppressive authoritarian state? At least we will live in this, what is like a story or movie about some third world country, that's the positive thing. Rather than watching about it on the history channel. Hope that cheered y'all up.

What would you say if Bush declared that he would not relinquish the presidency in 2008, because he reasons that he and he alone is vital for national security?

And why not? According to him he is the only one able to do the job

Relax indeed ...

perception5 - how many wars were you "alive" to have known that concept? that's not taught or learned. that idea/concept is a personal perception when riding on the coattails of particular political party. you my friend are a follower and definitely not a leader, to be believing in such a concept. again, how many wars have you been "alive" through???? such beliefs are ignorant and ill-mannered. it's a very sad, sad day when Americans will say "i will give my liberties for securities". a true American would take nothing short of their liberties, nor would a true American fight to the death for such nonsense as securities. your thoughts are nothing more than by-products of 9/11. keep riding the coattails. please do not standup for us true Americans, whose liberties mean everything to us.

The House vote was a vote to "suspend the rules" and approve the bill. It is the motion to "suspend the rules" which requires a two thirds majority.

No problem.

Follow the rules.

Refer it to a committee for review.

I can wait.

Why does bush even go to the congress? His numerous signing statements have proven if he doesn't agree with a law he'll just break it.
