White House Cites "Executive Branch Confidentiality Interests" In Withholding Info On Friendly Fire Death

George Bush is blocking a full public inquiry into 9-11. Richard Cheney threatens Democrats to keep quiet. "Press the issue, Cheney implied, and you risk being accused of interfering with the [war on terrorism]." The Battle Back Home, Newsweek Magazine: 02/04/02. Note: article also available from Newsweek archives.
Senate Leader Tom Daschle said "I can tell you on January 24th, first, and on January 28th second, and on other dates following, that request [by Cheney and Bush not to conduct any Sept. 11 inquiry] was made." Daschle: Bush, Cheney Urged No Sept. 11 Inquiry, Reuters News Service: 5/26/02. Strangely this story is no longer available on the original site, but echoes remain on the web.
"*** Cheney played a behind-the-scenes role last week in derailing an agreement to create an independent commission to investigate the 9-11 attacks. Last month the White House endorsed the formation of the panel. But on Thursday, hours after congressional negotiators hailed a final deal over the scope and powers of a 9-11 panel, Cheney called House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Porter Goss [to block] an independent commission to investigate 9-11." It worked. Goss told a closed-door conference committee he couldn't accept the deal, citing instructions from 'above my pay grade,' sources say." Cheney: Investigators, Keep Out, Newsweek Magazine: 10/21/02. - Reply to this comment

- "Accusing President Bush of covering up the facts surrounding a US soldier's death is really going over the line.
His mother has the right and Privilege to know what happened to her son and why his death was mis represented, she has every right and Bush should comply with her wishes instead of dismissing her right to know. Do you understand he is using the power of his office against Pat%u2019s mother and family and hiding behind a claim of privilege, what could he be afraid of it the truth were known? If he did nothing wrong then release the records, Pat is dead and his family has suffered enough. - Reply to this comment

McCain and Pelosi had nothing to do with the lying and deceit and cover up involving Tillman. It was YOUR right wing conservative administration and pentagon. If the truth came out it would be bad publicity for bush and his oil war.
How could they even think that the truth wouldn't come out? Maybe it is a lack of a brain that the administration you have moron. - Reply to this comment
- Accusing President Bush of covering up the facts surrounding a US soldier's death is really going over the line. . snip ...Does anyone really believe the Pentagon or the president could keep that information secret for even a day? Get real.

According to the article, it was more than 5 weeks before even the family was told that it was friendly fire that killed Pat. According to earlier articles on other sites, news was sent to headquarters IMMEDIATELY that friendly fire had caused the kill. As CiC, Bush was, no doubt, made aware of this, as it was a big factor that could be used for recruiting purposes. And, yes, the information could be kept secret for more than a day. Information frequently is. Some soldiers aren't even allowed to tell family where they are. - Reply to this comment
- Tillman is stil a hero, absolutely. he loved this country, you and me, so much he gave his life. What more did he have to give.
That Bush disgraces him and his family, that the snivelling cowards Cheney and Rove and McCain and Pelosi are dancing on his grave, disgracing him, laughing at his death and coldly using him and the other patriots while they party with the super-rich in their private planes doesn't make hime less of a hero. Nothing they can do can diminish or disgrace that man or the other American heroes. Words don't mean much, but thank you, Pat. Let's be worthy of you, and one thing we can do is to start the process and have the courage as a people to clean out the garbage in Washington, and only accept the leadership of honest, brave and decent men like you were, let's do that. - Reply to this comment
- President Bush and *** Cheney haven't taken a *** in over 7 years. They are witholding their feces along with all the other ************, crazy ******, nasty ******, lying ******, criminal ******, fvcked up ****** and unnecessary ******,; claiming executive privilege.
Oh yeah, if you think the GOP, RNC and the many sycophants surrounding Bush sorta stink too, that's because he is making them hold all of their ****** too. This executive privilege for National Security reasons appears to be just one huge load of ******. - Reply to this comment
- I am at a complete loss to understand why Bush did not order that the complete truthful version be made public at the time of Tillman's death. We were in the country on a mission that the entire world approved of. Although very regreatable, friendly fire happens in all wars. No one has ever been able to prevent it. Even the family would have accepted the truth when Tillman was killed and would have moved on. Tillman would still have been a hero because of what he sacrificed to serve his country.
I very much hope that his family campaigns to have all evidence be made public - even those held by the WH. - Reply to this comment
- If there was a god, Bush and Cheney would be standing in front of him already, before being sent straight to hell.
