Comments on: Cost Of Edwards' Haircut Hits $1,250
Beverly Hills Hair Stylist Who Cuts Democratic Presidential Hopeful's Hair Tells All To Washington Post
- First, William Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard and former Chief of Staff for VP Dan Quayle%u2014"I admit it: the liberal media were never that powerful, and the whole thing was often used as an excuse by conservatives for conservative failures."
Second, Pat Buchanan, who I%u2019m sure needs no introduction to your readers: "I've gotten balanced coverage and broad coverage -- all we could have asked . . . For heaven sakes, we kid about the liberal media, but every Republican on earth does that."
The Big Media Profit Motive
More than 80 percent of the stations snared in CMD%u2019s research are owned by large conglomerates. A list of the worst offenders reads like a who%u2019s who of big media, including stations owned by:
Tribune Company (9 stations)
Sinclair Broadcast Group (8 stations)
News Corp/Fox Television (8 stations0
Viacom/CBS Corp (6 stations)
The evidence suggests a strong tie between media consolidation and the use of deceptive, pre-packaged propaganda.
There%u2019s a reason for this: VNRs are free. Reporting news that%u2019s meaningful to local communities isn%u2019t. By opting to air a VNR instead of sending a reporter into the field, station owners save a fortune.
Corporate PR firms offer local stations VNRs knowing there%u2019s a built-in incentive to use them. By dressing up fake news as local reporting, stations cut costs and increase profits. - Reply to this comment
- This article is exactly what is wrong with the American media. This article, which would be more at home at TMZ, and more satisfying if it were published in The Onion, is a perfect caricature of our national obsession with the meaningless and the absurd.
God forbid we select our leaders based on their policies when we can do it based on their hair styles. We have a sitting president who can%u2019t even string simple words together in order to lie to us coherently, and the issue of the day is John Edwards%u2019s hair, or Hillary Clinton%u2019s maiden name.
Shame on you, CBS. Irresponsible reporting like this is the leading edge of the sword that is completely cutting America off from reality. You wield it; your editors get together at night and sharpen it.
Have some journalistic integrity and stop publishing nonsense like this. We can't even reach rock bottom if you won't put away the shovel. - Reply to this comment

Bill Gates likes to help poor people in Africa. Should he become one? Should he adopt one? What do you prescribe for Bill Gates in your infinite wisdom? - Reply to this comment
- Edwards is better than Paris Hilton...? Sounds like a good campaign slogan...after he consults with his stylist, maybe they'll run with it...

- One last thought: they do have a Congressional Barber in D.C. Wonder if he (Mr. Edwards) ever uses the service.

- Oh for crying out loud, he earned his money and can spend it anyway he wishes. Paris Hilton spends more on underware and drugs and makes the news, Oprah spends money on a diet and makes the news! Come on, people with money spend money. Just as all of us would if we had it. Do reporters really think people care all that much about it? What a waste of news space.

yeah...... but were not asking "Paris" to run our country. What the story tell me, is that maybe Mr. Ewards doesn't have good fiscal thinking. If he is willing to spend his own money like that, then I cringeto think of the ways he would spend my hard earned tax dollar! - Reply to this comment
- Yes, it is his money but he spends countless hours pretending to know how it is like for the poverty stricken folks. He cannot have a clude.
The bunko artist that stated on his tomstone, "Lord, let them bury me with one hand sticking out so I can fleece the suckers as they pass by" must have had Edwards in mind.
PLAINLY PUT - we need a guy/gal in the WH who knows the value of a buck. - Reply to this comment
- It just goes to show you how far removed most wealthy Politicians are from the every day life of the average person in America. I think this rings true Dems and Repubs alike.
As for me, I will stick to my local Barber Shop, they do a great job, charge a fair price, and the conversation is great! - Reply to this comment
When Americans care more about hair cuts than issues, Democracy is truly in jeopardy.- Reply to this comment

- A $1200 haircut?---THAT! Not only is he not prudent but he got ripped off to boot...I guess he'll just have to have one of those folksy little get togethers with his Pa's friends down at the plant...they can swap haircut stories...
This huckster took a post at the University of North Carolina Poverty Center...
I may well have been terribly wrong about this fellow's possibilities as a 'dark horse' in a previous post...A man who can't go to the barber shop without creating a public relations disaster might not fare very well...but he still looks good compared to the Clin'Toons. - Reply to this comment
If I were a candidate right now, I would have my picture taken getting a $10 Fantastic Sam's cut and make this dude look like a money spending fool.
If he makes it to the White House, our government will pay $100,000 for it because I seem to remember the $400 for each hammer we all paid for....- Reply to this comment
- CBS won't allow us to discuss the commutation of Libby's sentence for perjury and obstructing a federal investigation involving a serious breach of national security but we can comment on a candidate's haircut.
Wow, that's what I call hard hitting news coverage!
Leave it to the "liberal press". - Reply to this comment
- Great idea the man is running for President of the United States and he%u2019s very wealthy, so he%u2019s going to go into super cuts and let some stranger holding a pair of scissors as he%u2019s sitting down clip his hair. Moreover, what if that barber happens to be a Looney Republican, John E. paying $400 for a hair cut would be equivalent to a person like you paying $20 it%u2019s no big deal.

- Even if Edwards did go to Supercuts Faux News Channel would have their cameras perched and say its a stunt. He used his own money or his campaign money NOT taxpayer dollars. Where is the news? and think about all the *** a stylist has to do in order to cut one clients hair. time equipment, loss of other clients. No one seems to raise an eyebrow for how much is spent on commericials or campaign consultants or the other high ticketed campaign ***. so Stick with the issues.

More important, they also helped to draw away any critical examination from the real engine of our violence: Islamic theology.

- perception5,
Crime in the cities virtually disappeared when Clinton used fed funds for coommunity policing and reappeared with a vengence after Bush cut that funding to provide compassioante conservatism to those making over $200,000/year.
