How any authority could say it's better for a person to know just one language, when they could know two languages well, is beyond me!

I couldn't have said it better myself hope.

"Firstly: I think if we offer press 1 to Spanish speakers, why not the hundred (?) other languages that people speak in this country. If you live here you should speak English, period!! If I moved to another country I WOULD learn their language. I would integrate myself into their culture and keep the parts about who I am present too. But would I expect them to change who they are to allow me to be there? NO"

Statistically speaking, Spanish is the second biggest language spoken in America. Thats why!

My friend's parents moved to Mexico, they get fully serviced in English. Why not learn another language? English is not the official language!

Arrnnolds Web site:
"08/22/2006 - Today, Californians for Schwarzenegger announced the release of a new Spanish-language television ad. "Avanzamos" highlights Governor Schwarzenegger's leadership in moving California forward."

Bush on sang Star Spangled Banner in Spanish on the campaign trail and that didn't keep Arrrnnooold from campaigning for him-
Bush spent $3.3 million on Spanish TV ads for re-election.

Ken Mehlman, Bush-Cheney '04 campaign manager, said: "As While I don't yet speak Spanish, there is one phrase I memorized as Republican National Committee chairman: "Mi partido es su partido." ("My party is your party.")"

The RNC aired SPANISH LANGUAGE radio ads against Harry Reid in 2006: "The 60-second spot says in Spanish that Reid "blocked our leaders from working together" and blames Democrats for legislation that passed the Republican-controlled House that would make illegal immigrants subject to felony charges."

And "...the Nevada Republican Hispanic Coalition, a group affiliated with the state and Clark County GOP, called Reid "a rich Anglo" ... http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/nevada/2006/apr/13/041310264.html

Nothing is "washed up" about our culture...
Welcome to america , the land that rejected "culture" when we sailed from imperialistic england and glad to see you totally reject your own culture.

When we sailed? My generation never sailed from anywhere, they were already here!

So I am an American First, and I am proud of my culture!

Arnold had the right idea, it'll be interesting to see how much those words get stretched out of proportion and twisted to sound hateful.

AND:

Why would you find it offensive to press 1. Would you find it offensive if Germany gave you the option to press 1 for English service? Do you find it offensive when you go to a Mexico and they service you in English?

No sane person expects not to have some way of assisting those new to the country (legally), to not be able to get the language right away and there are some things that can exist in other languages to alert and be informational, but this is way overboard.

Secondly: NO, I do not find it offensive that a service person in Mexico speaks to me in English .. IT'S THEIR JOB to ... It's a resort, they are supposed to cater to the guest, which, by the way is there LEGALLY.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to succeed in school and want to attend with poor English language skills and I'll be damed if I'll ever support Spanish speaking schools. Enough already. Get these kids speaking English.

maybe if your culture did not wash up a couple of generations ago, then you would also speak a foreign language.

Welcome to america , the land that rejected "culture" when we sailed from imperialistic england and glad to see you totally reject your own culture.

hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion;

so help me God.

The redundancy ("absolutely and entirely," "renounce and abjure," "subject or citizen") is clear, emphatic, and essential.

"These are the kids who are confused and end up hanging out on the street corner instead of going to class".

All because they speak spanish, they are hanging out in the street corners?

ha ha, your a joke!

I think you a subliminal racist!

In order to fix the problem we need to legalize these immigrants, and seal the borders.

Why so much negativity? How are these people affecting you? Is it because your paying for their medical bills? I pay for taxes, (they TAKE my taxes) for things that I don not believe they should for? Why would you want to neglect a Human being, Medical benefits, Education, and Social Services?

a) I don't go to Mexico!
b) I won't go to Mexico!
c) I've never vacationed in Mexico!
d) The Mexican gov't and rich aristocracy will not raise taxes for the rich (sound familiar?). Their policies force their overflow po' folk up here where we suckers pay for their medical, welfare, education, accidents, prison terms, etc.

Other than that I love the Mexican people!!

If you were illegal in a foreign country, you would be hiding in the shadows of society.

Good point get the word out that this isn't Disneyland and if you're illegal, life here is not good. We're not going to make life as cushy as it's been. The party's over.

I would hope that Mexican-Americans would support their children's English language skills. you do a big dis-service to your kids if you don't. I've seen parents that forbid their kids to use English because they're trying to make some radical position that Spanish is better. These are the kids who are confused and end up hanging out on the street corner instead of going to class.

I spent a year in Germany, courtesy of Uncle Sucker, and I learned enough German to live on the economy. I don't understand why learning the language of the country you're living in is such a big deal. Most Germans were happy to see the effort and helped out. When you tried to speak in English only people ignored you, even young people who were taught English in school. All we're asking for is immigrants to take the effort. And yes I find it offensive to press 1 for English you Morons. Not lazy, just offended.

Maybe learn another language! Simple! The majority of Puerto Ricans from Puerto Rico do not speak English, And they are Americans! I am 3rd generation Mexican American, and I gladly speak spanish. I am teaching my daughter, a 4th generation Mexican American, to speak spanish. maybe if your culture did not wash up a couple of generations ago, then you would also speak a foreign language.

Maybe if we took the time to learn a few phrases of other languages, by subtle exposure, when traveling to other countries we wouldn't be so quick to expect the rest of the world to speak english for us!
I am not qualified to answer for all US travelers to foreign countries, not can I offer an opinon of foreign travel, since I have no intention of going abroad, but When I did travel, I learned some basic phrases to help me get by. However I think this pertains to our country having notices and signs in other languages.
Honestly, I wish I could hire someone who does speak Spanish and English, that way I could take care of those non-english speaking customers.

A lot of immigrants do speak English. Everybody wants to pick on the Hispanic culture. They fear the immigrant! They want immigrants to communicate. To whom? they are illegal! If you were illegal in a foreign country, you would be hiding in the shadows of society.

Are people to lazy to push 1 on their keypad for English service?

This is a country on many races, ethnic backgrounds, and religions.

English is not the official language in America!

Every country that you visit has different languages that they speak.

Wake up America!
