California Gov. Says Immigrants Should Shun Spanish-Language Media To Learn English
- For extended stays in Mexico, you must apply for the Visitors permit (usually an FM3) through your company and state what the purpose of the visit is, and how long it is likely to take. There are also some forms to fill out and a handling fee to pay. You can download the forms, and find out the latest fees and process by contacting your local Mexican Consulate. Visitor's Permits are issued for up to one year, and are renewable four times, for a maximum of one year each time - for a total maximum period of five years. See more information on Immigration Permits below.

In general, foreign nationals are welcome to visit Mexico for a defined period of time to take part in non-remunerative activities (e.g. a holiday), and requirements for remunerative visits or longer stays (beyond 180 days) require special permits from the Mexican Consulate.
There are two kinds of permit: Non-Immigrant and Immigrant:
Non Immigrant Permits are for people who intend to visit Mexico for a specific purpose and then depart.
Immigrant Permits are for people who wish to live in Mexico, short or long term.
You do not have to surrender your natural Citizenship to be granted full resident status in Mexico. Full resident status entitles you to all rights and benefits of a Mexican National (live, work, claim state benefits and to pay taxes) but you cannot vote in Mexican elections. These permits may also prohibit work in specific industries. These are limited, and relate to bar and waiter/waitress work.- Reply to this comment

Hey Rudy,
Is this supposed to be Italian? Because if so, it doesn't translate very well and I'm can't interpet what you are trying to say besides once again calling someone a racist who clearly is not. Maybe you should come up with a more appropriate insult. - Reply to this comment
- Including the USA I've lived/worked in 90 countries, and ONLY the USA permits broadcasting in a foreign language. I learned over 30 languages pretty much the way the Austrian-born Governor of California learned English as he was trying to point out to media representatives, who instantly labeled him a "racist" because he dared to suggest foreigners learn English if they plan living in the USA. (1) eliminate any broadcasting except in English, (2) defeat Mr. Bush's S.1348 "Senate" Corporate Welfare and Amnesty proposals, (3) arrest, fine, and jail officers, managers, and companies employing illegal aliens (4) cut off Federal funds of any sort to a city, police department or any other State or local entity not cooperating fully with ICE, (5) cut off Federal tax-exempt status for any and all religious organizations (so as no controversy which ones offer "sanctuary" or meddle in or frustrate ICE or local enforcement, or otherwise preach politics from the pulpit), (6) ENFORCE ALL OTHER CURRENT LAWS.

Thank you for noticing I'm Italian! Actually I'm not racist, but I definitely don't like some people based on their attitude. Whatever race they are is not even considered. If you don't like that tuff ***!! You, I don't like! - Reply to this comment
- I believe the Governor was just trying to say that, if you are here, try to learn the native language to get by. He was giving advice based on his experience as an immigrant himself.
It has nothing do with the governor's background who his daddy was, nor the color of any skin.
Does your Dad's sin's reflect who you are?? Anyhoo-- :0}
Actually, it is refreshing to hear someone of any party give advice,to immigrants. Go figure,it is someone that has been there and done that! - Reply to this comment
- I have a daughter-in-law that has been here for 20+ years. She is a spanish speaking individual and refuses to get her citizenship. She came from a household that attended spanish speaking schools, had to attend ESL classes at her high school and could not communicate in English when she married my son. From what I have observed, her attitude is pretty much across the board for most Hispanic immigrants. By the way, her student VISA was expiring, so she got herself pregnant so she could stay in this country. She has made life not pleasant for my son, including sending money without his knowledge back to her "HOME".

- Silly- very silly. Yes, anyone who expects to stay in the USA needs to learn the language but that doesn't mean they have to give up who they are and were they come from.
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is wrong- they can learn the language AND watch television which presents entertainment and news in their native tongue. Maybe he wasn't smart enough to do both but I bet most people can.
If he said they need to do all they can to learn English and become more immersed into American culture, that would be one thing. To say they need to not watch Spanish language television is ridiculous.
The US is only major industrial power that doesn't require learning a second language. Most of those students that come here seem to do quite well and I bet they watched/listened to TV and audio in their native tongue back home.
That tells you that even the people the governor was speaking of can walk and chew bubble gum at the same time once they apply themselves to the task.
Another Reich Publican spewing silly stupid statements- haven't we come to expect this from that party more and more? - Reply to this comment
- I have been through sections of LA and El Paso where people cannot speak or understand English.
They cannot speak or understand English.
It's appalling. - Reply to this comment
- "Schwarzenegger: Don't Watch Spanish TV"
Typical of politicians to have a narrow vision. And so often their position is only partially beneficial and partly destructive/controversial.
When Arnold and other Americans make such a statement to Hispanics, they need to SIMULTANEOUSLY remind the Hispanics that it is advantageous to be multilingual, and that there is no need to even consider giving up their Mother Tongue, Spanish.
Otherwise, such a statement can come off as being rude and hateful as ARE intended by many mean spirited Americans.
If Arnold would have followed the suggestion above, then he would not have to worry about being 'political incorrect', which can be construed as being disingenuous when place in conjunction with other questionable statemenst. - Reply to this comment
- How hard is it for people who are pis...sing and moaning about how awful it is to expect Hispanics to speak English to understand...it's not about expecting them to GIVE UP speaking their native language here, it's about learning our language to navigate easier. They HIDE because they are illegal, speak no English, and know they should not be here. Seems to me removing even one barrier could increase their odds of succeeding!!! Everyone should be bi-lingual, and that doesn't mean giving up the dominate language. Geeeeeeze! Americans can be so arrogant, especially if they have never traveled outside the states (some never leave their own state), but it is not expecting too much for immigrants...legal or illegal, to attempt to learn even survival English. Speak your dominate language all you want within your own cultural environment, but to integrate (and being unwilling to intigrate is insulting..go home if you aren't interested in learning to live in our society) learn English. And for those who think living in a culture outside your own is easy...do it. It is terrifying and requires guts to persist in constantly being the one outside looking in countless times in a day. This isn't just an experience Hispanics have, you know. We have people from all over the world here and not all have a healthy command of the English language. Try to imagine how it feels.

- If I were to move to Mexico, I would learn how to speak Spanish.
I know that people speak Spanish in Mexico and not English so common sense tells me if I move to Mexico I learn to speak Spanish!
It's a simple concept to understand, it really is. - Reply to this comment
- to Mr. Arnold Shwarze-negger,
(black) (black) In German-Yiddish
Why not change your name to Arnold Black-Black, in keeping with your support for US English xenophobia?
I guess it shouldn't surprise that a man whose father was a nazi officer would express such views. - Reply to this comment
- I can speak :
(fluently) English, Spanish, Dutch (Nederlands), Indo Malay, Sundanese, Javanese...
(not so fluently, but can get by) German, French, Tagalog, Balinese, Chinese (Mandarin and Hokkien, gradually absorbing Cantonese).
It was not difficult for me to pick up these languages, and I am a "Black" American. To turn your xenophobic arguments back upon the advocates, why can't you lazy redneck bigots learn to communicate in languages other than your version of English? (and most of you poorly even then) - Reply to this comment
- "Hmmm...fluent in German and Spanish. But then it came to me , you Nazi's did real well in South America!"
Well, I wouldn't know. Though, I suppose you and your fellow racist "squadristi" would.

- Nobody cares about Hispanics speaking Spanish. We care about the lack of incentive to learn English. They think they can come here and never have to learn English. Send their kids to school and have them teach the kids English. It's lazy and disprespectful to a host nation that has given them much.

- What's up with this paranoia about language? Did anyone see the Godfather? where was the uproar at all the Italians speaking their native language in that movie? Why worry about something you have no control over? Hispanics will continue to speak Spanish no matter how many laws you enact. Those of you that are worried about this need to get a life.
