Sarcasm on Oh good, just what we need Sarcasm off This is ridiculous, 2nd amendment anyone...The right to bear arms, as long as we say it's ok. That's Bullsh*t. The only thing gun control is gonna do is keep guns out of honest people's hands. Think about it, drugs are illegal but criminals still find a way to get them. The same will happen with guns. *** democraps!!!(and no thats not a typo).

The point isn't to get bad people to do good things. The point is to identify bad people and interdict them before they do bad things.

Good people should favor this.

"Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws." - Plato (427-347 B.C.)

This is probably a spurious quote that has been repeated so often that no one thinks to question its authenticity.

Here's another very famous but spurious quote:

Falsely attributed to Winston Churchill: "If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain."

The Churchill Centre comments: There is no record of anyone hearing Churchill say this. Paul Addison of Edinburgh University makes this comment: "Surely Churchill can't have used the words attributed to him. He'd been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! And would he have talked so disrespectfully of Clemmie [Churchill's wife Clementine Hozier], who is generally thought to have been a lifelong Liberal?"

Would you please tell me in which one of Plato's works this quote is found ? I just searched the Internet and couldn't find it attributed to a specific Dialogue or Letter of Plato.

I suspect, however, that it is quoted out of context.

Plato was not advocating that laws are unnecessary and useless -- he held the opposite opinion, and in fact his final work was entitled "The Laws".

That quote was probably spoken by a person in one of Plato's Dialogues with whom Plato himself (and his mouthpiece Socrates) strongly disagreed.

Plato's own views were not anarchist. He wrote:

"Certain of the unnecessary pleasures and appetites I conceive to be unlawful; every one appears to have them, but in some persons they are controlled by the laws and by reason"
- The Republic, Book IX - On Wrong or Right Government and the Features of Each - by Plato

Why is it always the one case that has to change things for the rest of us? Huh? Why is it always that one guy? And then all of a sudden, the lunatic walks in and says: "WE'RE ALL LIKE DAT!" Huh?

Exceptions aren't the rules! The Constitution is.

Unfortunately, this is just more fluff coming from congress. If a nut-case or a crook wants to get a gun, it's gonna happen. Legislation can only go so far. Booze/dope never goes with guns, cars, relationships,or sexx.

As someone who is a "mental health patient" suffering from depression, but has never been violent or had violent thoughts, I would very much appreciate more clarification in CBS' news reports on this issue. The bill does not require all "mental health patients" to be on the list... only those who have been deemed a danger to themselves or others in a court of law (which I firmly believe is a good thing). Please help stop perpetuating the stigma that "patients" like me face and bring clarity to your news reports.

"We have to remember that unless the Senate has a 60 member majority, a presidential veto cannot be overriden. Let's work to insure the democrats have that 60 member majority at the end on 08. I will do my part."

I will do my part also - to ensure that it NEVER happens.

"Why not require every driver and every gun owner to affirm in writing, under penalty of perjury, that he or she currently abstains from alcohol, and then if he or she ever decides to start using alcohol again, he or she will first voluntarily surrender driving license and/or firearms and gun license?"

"This would requires at most a slight modification to the 2nd Amendment, not its repeal. It would be beneficial to the American public in any number of ways."

I agree - partially. There are those who sip the occasional glass of wine with dinner who likely do not present a problem, and there are those who aren't satisfied until they're puking all over themselves and waking up next to a fat pig and have to figure out how to get her out of the apartment before his neighbors see her. Such a law would be difficult to enforce, but I agree that those who consume mind-altering substances (alcohol included) should give it up before owning firearms.

The people that need to be held responsible are the Hospital staff on that day, not 911. If my loved one is vomiting blood, I guarantee I would make someone help me. I work in a level 1 Truama center and also as a firefighter/EMT. The job of 911 is to get them to a hospital.
