Gee, Obama has finally shown himself! After 300 years he thinks blacks are still oppressed? Goodbye White House, Barack.

And I've got to come back to this because it drives me nuts to be called a racist. I worked for many years with teenage boys so I base my opinion on that. The biggest difference I saw in boys who quit school was that many white boys had an opportunity with a dad or male family member to enter a trade. The black boys on the other hand had little guidance. Nowdays I'm sure the differences have evened out but one thing I'll bet has not changed and that is boys are still dropping out of school and still need an opportunity for good paying jobs.

Those are or were good paying jobs many union jobs and of course they're not completely filled by blacks they are however filled by lower skilled workers of whatever color. My point is that those jobs are no longer good jobs they have no hope of ever being anything but slave jobs and that is due to illegal immigration. It's not a racist statement but the fact is blacks are the ones who suffered and fought for their betterment and equality. If you don't think there are uneducated blacks out there who need good paying low skilled jobs you're nuts. The same applies for single moms who haven't had the opportunity to go to college. Illegal immigration destroys their chance to earn a living. Is that a sexist statement.

to tbweb, I have a better solution, that will end this problem in real terms;

1. make it a crime of human trafficking to hire illegal migrant workers for less than the locally adjusted living (as opposed to minimum) wage, with fixed sentences and fines, say 7 to 25 years jail, and $25,000. per victim, and no judges' discretion...

2. make it a similar crime, with similar sanctions, to pay any workers less than the locally adjusted living (not minimum) wage.

Then sit back and watch the illegals disappear, because the jobs will be filled by American laborers.

Don't forget to enjoy the screaming of the capitalists, as they gripe about the cost of being positive contributors to society for once...

To Bella_L, you are greatly mistaken, bordering on racist, because picking vegetables and fruit for a few cents per hour, or working in sweatshops for precious little more, or being underpaid maids and house servants are not "our jobs", as you put it, we are not those kinds of slaves anymore. If these jobs paid a living wage, there would be a lot of people of all ethnicities doing them, including whites.

Migrant workers do work that the greedy employers don't wish to pay decent wages for, they claim falsely that it keeps the prices down, when in reality it only keeps their profit margins up.

The neocon BS that Americans don't want to do those kinds of work is a dangerous lie, it is the sub human wages Americans don't want.

After reading the posts on this board, all I can say is, Wow.

These posts single handedly support Barack's message. That people become so angry when he points out some hard truths about race in this country it truly a statement of how far we have yet to go in this county

What is even more amazing is how people seem to be projecting their feelings about race, particularly blacks, onto Obama, as if that is what he was saying.

Read the text again - Obama is not playing the race card, he is not saying that we should just give black people handouts or that we all should blame white people for their problems.

He is merely saying that there are people who live in povery, among violence etc and that it isn't enough to just recognize that and move on. We should be willing to help.

And I'm sure if you ask Obama, he'd be the first to say that those same people need to share in the responsibility of making their lives better.

Its sad that as soon as he makes a speech that is considered "black" so many people turn on him.

brianbwb,,,

Cool, you may have just solved the U.S. illegal immigrant problem, we can just tell the illegal Mexicans they are the "NEW" beasts of burden and maybe they will feel insulted and go back to Mexico!

For those who don't understand the negative views re Colin Powell and Condi Rice, let me lay it out. For those who remember the struggles of the '60s (I do), our struggle was to cast off the burden of racism so we could aspire to and make a better life than that allowed by our oppressors. Powell and Rice, by helping Mr. Bush in his illegalities, which he has allowed to be cast by some as a religious war, are therefore furthering the cause of the corrupt and intolerant.

In selling their names, reputations, and souls to Mr. Bush, assisting in the same kinds of intolerance that was once directed mainly at us, they have simply joined the oppressors, "Uncle Tom" now has at long last a female name counterpart in "Aunt Condi".

In short, there are many of us who don't see becoming just like your oppressor as progress, we had such already, they were called "house slaves", who enjoyed the leftover viands on the masters' tables, as opposed to "field slaves" who were dehumanized as beasts of burden.

If these are the only two choices for us, then our struggle is far from over...

Bravo. The blacks have struggled for hundreds of years for equality and illegal immigrants get their civil rights benefits and their jobs. It's the black community that loses big time with this immigration bill

robertr121,,,

I didn't like what happened to Imus because I considered Imus in another category from the norm, like almost a comedian, like a Jay Leno. Imus was a shock jock, that's what he does, thats what he always did. Imus insulted his own wife on his show, nobody was exempt! I think Imus crossed the line big time in the case of the Rutgers female basketball team, that was even a little over the top even by Imus standards. But I thought the "in person" apology was good and sincere and I thought the penalty was too harsh only because thats what Imus does for a living, insult people, he just went too far in the Rutgers case. If it wasn't his job, livelihood, what he did for a living, the punishment would have been just but it was a bad mistake and we all make them.

AJMarine1,,,

You can't win with some people, no matter what you do they will find something wrong with it! This is especially true when someone doesn't like you or your politics. Its easy to criticise but harder to offer solutions and solve real or perceived problems. What people need to do is ask Harry Belfonta what would he do differently, what solutions does he propose and what would make him happy? I'm not even sure I would want to hear his response, because like I said if someone doesn't like you or your politics the response really doesn't matter because whatever the response is you already know in advance it will be nasty so don't even go there!

standlee5,,,

Ahhh, speaking English in the U.S.!! For me the issue of English being the primary and official language in the U.S. is a practical consideration, not based in cultural disrespect or insensitivity. I served as Marine in Vietnam and it blows me away that people can't see the advantage of everyone speaking the same language and being on the same channel. If a fellow soldier needs help in any context, language barriers can be fatal. Even in everyday life, not being able to communicate in a medical emergency can be fatal. This is such a stupid issue and when considered in strictly practical terms, not cultural, makes complete sense to me!

You won't get an argument from me about that.

NOW THIS IS RICH...

Posted by hamiltongrad at 12:02 AM : Jun 06, 2007

hamiltongrad,,,

I'll tell you what's even richer than that, the U.S. let 12 to 20 million plus illegal Mexicans walk into the U.S. and set up camp and the hispanic speaking group now out numbers U.S. born Blacks just like that, overnight! Newt Gingrich said on Fox News Sunday this week that there are now 30,000 Mexican gang members in the U.S. committing crimes and murders making the 54 from LA you are crying about look like a minor event. The Black event was a one time event, the Mexican event is on going and getting worst! You need focus on the right priorities, the clear and present danger, the here and now!

web,

"Blacks could argue they had good role models but the white cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer ate them. You see my point."

The good role model that they have, Condi, Thomas Wilson, Colin Powell, etc., they will say that these are: House N****rs, White want a bes. or Oreos. Any one that is successful is a trader.

AJMarine1,,,

In my view the best role models from any culture are those who live a crime free life, get an education and pursue their dreams. Role models don't have to be rich in assets, titles, wealth, high positions or any of that. A good role model can simply be a good person who respects the rights of others and most importantly gives something back to the world of value instead of just criticism and hate. Keep life simple, life is good!
