mikealford3,

I lived in North Carolina through Floyd and you know that didn't happen; you've paraphrased an old joke and presented it as a real event.

However, the real point of your own story is that there are times in everyone's life where they can't act alone to help themselves without the help of others. All citizens have a responsibility to help their neighbors if they can and the government exists to help all its citizens.

If we can't help our own citizens, what're we doing in Iraq? Why can't they just help themselves?

I didn't need Obama to tell me about people in poverty but I want anyone running for President to tell me what they're going to do about the problems we face.

Nobody has done that yet, not even Obama, but at least he's brought it into the discussion. So let's all discuss it.

There were thousands of black people stranded on their roofs and elsewhere in New Orleans for many days that would have taken a truck, a bus, a plane. Where was help, where was God?

For those who blame anybody else for the overwhelming circumstances of the poor and impoverished in this country, let me tell you a little story.

Back in 1999, hurricanes Dennis and Floyd ravaged parts of the east coast, causing whole towns to be under water.

As the storm approached a rescue worker pulled up to a home and offered a man a ride in his truck to safety, the man refused saying "God's going to look after me."

The strom came, the water rose and a man in a boat approached the same man and offered a ride in his boat to safety, again the man refused saying "God's going to look after me".

Eventually the old man was forced onto his roof because the water was so high. Again a man approached in a boat and offered a ride to safety. The old man again refused.

Soon the old man found himself on top of the chimney, looking up toward the heavens and asking, "why god, I have been faithful to you and you let this happen to me."
A voice came down from heaven saying, "My son, I have sent you a truck and 2 boats to carry you to safety, just what do you expect me to do?"

Point being, sometimes you have to recognize help and be willing to help yourself.

He is merely saying that there are people who live in povery, among violence etc and that it isn't enough to just recognize that and move on. We should be willing to help.

steve,

Did you need Obama to tell you about these people or did you already know there are poor people in this country who live in violent areas?

but one thing I'll bet has not changed and that is boys are still dropping out of school and still need an opportunity for good paying jobs.

That in itself is part of our problem. Kids, dropping out of school and expecting good paying jobs. People who drop out of school generally don't get good paying jobs, they don't deserve them. A kid with an 8th grade education can not expect to get a good paying job. Perhaps if these kids where to stay in school and "WORK" for the education they could get a desent paying job.

What a joke, ever heard of personal responsibility? Typical Liberal/Socialist crud....
Considering his color, this is not a shock to hear this type of junk come out of his mouth.

The only people who think Obama is stirring racial fear are people already in the grip of racial fear.

They are in fact clones of the people who said that about MLK... everyone in America is poor by choice, go away and stop making trouble, don't threaten the status quo.

"...one knows Obama also refers to the poor whites of Appalachia, or those who also share the inner cities hell, or the suburban and exburban trailer parks."
brianwb, You can't make them let go of their knee jerk antipathy with such an insignificant detail as the truth.

janem4,

The Republicans are out defending an illegal White House aide who gave up our ability to stop terrorists from getting nukes. You must be outraged!

to rushlimpdrug,
If one incorrectly assumes that all people in poverty are "black", then perhaps there is a racial slant implied in the wording, but if one is more aware, one knows Obama also refers to the poor whites of Appalachia, or those who also share the inner cities hell, or the suburban and exburban trailer parks. He speaks of the poor in general. Talks the talk, but we know he'd never be allowed to walk the walk.

to infidel_us,

All but the "lefty whites"? Then get to worryin', son, 'cause y'all now the minority...

They put MLK in jail for a faulty tail light. I bet that vision of Obama behind bars just warms your nasty little heart...

And not having one doesn't make you smart either. Do you want to pretend that the riots didn't happen. Do you want to pretend that Katrina didn't happen? Better yet, I'll bet you would like to pretend black American's didn't exist. Obama did nothing but tell the truth about something you righty rednecks only want to talk about behind closed doors...

"Osama just alienated himself from all but the lefty whites. Good job, nit-wit. You have once again proven that having an education doesn't make you smart."

At least he's honest in his views. You sound like you want him to lie to you.

Thats a heck of a way to run for president.

You guys tried that with MLK as well. It kinda worked- with him dying and all that.

Betcha it doesn't go that way this time.

To janem4, where in all my posts have I said that I am a democrat? Your willingness to assume without adequate information is a trademark of neocons, but I won't insult you by assuming you are so.

I posit that both "sides" are like the "good cop, bad cop" of corruption, The dems decry it, while practicing it, the repubs try to tell you corruption is not important, or divert your scrutiny to a manufactures "crisis", also while practicing it.

You write, "As for your racist comments on Powell and Rice, disgusting and certainly intolerant."

Show me where they are racist, and or intolerant.

to BellaL, the low paying jobs are not caused by illegals, but rather the fact that the employers don't want to pay a decent wage for the labor needed, 4 or 5 dollars per day is nothing here, but one can at least eat in Mexico, where they send their wages.

Do you really think an "unskilled" mother (if you think mothering doesn't require skills,...) needs a job that pays 4 or 5 dollars a day? Illegals are not a cause, they are a result. Time to stop blaming the victims, and deal with those who make slave labor possible, the employers.
