Wow... Amazing comments... some from the edge of lunacy.

Well this afternoon, I was asked by (actually yelled at by) my 83 year old boss that "Universal health care will skyrocket taxes- who's gonna pay for it?"

I didn't really have an answer for this since I'd never take a politician's promises as sign taxes wouldn't go up. "Read my lips"- yea right!

But later I had to ask myself a question:

If it meant that the uninsured had some basic health care without facing financial ruin through anything catastrophic- then YES... I'm willing to pay higher taxes.

In fact I'd do it enthusiastically.

So the answer to my boss' question is simply "me, I'm going to pay for it". Considering how I'm paying for unpaid medical care for the uninsured through high medical costs, and higher insurance rates for the same reason- this is a deal.

Then with the unpaid medical costs for the uninsured recovered- the free market can work to reduce insurance costs through the recovery of costs associated with the uninsured now having a payer.

It also helps economically/socially/and on the bankruptcy front since no one will have an unpaid bill.

I'm all in.

A total injustice in America is the fact that for some of us, we are paying out half of our wages in health insurance coverage, while others are living off the tax dollars and premiums of us.Who feels sorry for us? No one.I am sorry that there are people who cant afford insurance but get a job just like me.I cant afford it either but I pay it because I have to.Universal coverage must come to balance the scales of injustice, or either more Americans are going to have to get a job and stop depending on the government to take care of their bills.

Another tax upon small business. Lets leave it alone and allow our economy to continue to work. We cannot for a minute think about providing free health care.

Just like the Demecrats, Let's start spending money before we know where it is going to come from.
One of the reasons we have our current level of quality health care is because we do not have socialized health care. Granted, it is the big health care providers that are making a killing, but without competition you do not have the incentive to get better at what you do.
What we need is to get rid of the political parties and be able to vote for the "Man" that is the best for the position. Also make it possible again to have a President with one view and a Vice-President with another. Maybe have it manditory to have a Republican President and a Demacrat Vice-President, etc.
We need to force our politicians to work togather, not fight with each other. Everytime they fight, the American Public looses.

These universal health fanatics forget one key thing. They are advocating use of violence. At least it ends up there, with an armed IRS agent, if you reject their plan. The proof of their evil is simple.

To take another's hard-earned money, claiming it is right, against the consent of the owner is morally wrong. Theft by definition. It is condoning rape, except they want you to call it lovemaking. No means no, so why make special exceptions when it comes to stealing your money?
These politicians aren't too consistent or bright for that matter. They just want to call violence something different, and they'll get angry when you spot their truly violent ways.

Our right to live and be healthy is one thing that should not be subject to the market forces of supply and demand. We should have completely free healthcare for all....but this is at least a start.

Nothing is free! How can you ever think that? Do you know how much money that costs? And where do you think that money will come from? It won't grow on trees, you know? It will come from the pockets of tax payers who already pay too many taxes, for the benefits of those (illegal aliens, lazy bones on social security, etc) who don't pay any taxes and only take from the system. Obama says we'll be saving $2,500 a year in health care premium, but he doesn't say how much more it's going to cost me in additional taxes. And if he isn't going to raise my taxes to pay for universal health care, it means he's going to take money away from other things where my tax money used to go, like schools, roads, public transport, etc. Universal health care is a bad idea!

Where does medicaid, DHSH, state medical coupons and state subsidized health insurance come into this argument. We already provide healthcare to the poor. The rest of us pay our own or get it through employers. What we need to concentrate on is getting wages UP so people can participate and not be condemned to govt. supplemental programs not starting another big govt. entitlement program that will dumb down our medical care. If people can't afford health insurance they need to call their state and get on a subsidized health plan. If they don't make the call it's not our fault.

The plan is good because it is common sense help the poor get coverage by giving them money to buy coverage for existing providers.

brianbwb,
Excellent post! It's refreshing to read a post which emphasises solutions without the remarks being prefaced by ideological digs.

barbara4, I hear what you're saying but it doesn't have to be that way if peole decide that change is needed.

It should be noted that the reason there are mi=oney grubbers in D.C. is because they're bought off by money grubbers from the private sector. The only hope to control money grubbers in either dector is through a publically funded electoral process that puts independent minded people in the game.
