- It also warned that %u201Cmany angry young recruits%u201D would fuel the rank of Islamic extremists and "Iraqi political culture is so embued with mores (opposed) to the democratic experience %u2026 that it may resist the most rigorous and prolonged democratic tutorials."
None of those warnings were reflected in the administration's predictions about the war.
In fact, Vice President Cheney stated the day before the war, %u201CNow, I think things have gotten so bad inside Iraq, from the standpoint of the Iraqi people, my belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators.%u201D - Reply to this comment
- Congress is a joke. To give this guy another blank check to keep on killing without any end in sight after everything the Republicans have done to this country is really pathetic.

- In a move sure to raise even more questions about the decision to go to war with Iraq, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence will on Friday release selected portions of pre-war intelligence in which the CIA warned the administration of the risk and consequences of a conflict in the Middle East.
Among other things, the 40-page Senate report reveals that two intelligence assessments before the war accurately predicted that toppling Saddam could lead to a dangerous period of internal violence and provide a boost to terrorists. But those warnings were seemingly ignored.

- infidel_US,
Well said.
Regardless of what ultimately happens in Iraq, I believe we will ultimately prevail against terrorism because of the sacrifices being made by those who serve and because of our principles. We need to rediscover some of our principles but fortunately we've never been without good people willing to sacrifice. - Reply to this comment

- Democrats need to be savvy about how to continue here. There will never be enough votes to carry a deadline in the Senate because of the number of Republicans there, so the next strategy needs to be to mobilize intense pressure against the Senate Republicans in their home districts. Let's not have any ongoing rancor over this vote, the Democrats in Congress have done all they can with honor do, and it's now time to bring the wrath of the public to bear directly on those who have earned it, the Senate Republicans...

- processor2,
You may be right that the Democrats surrendered on the surrender date as you say. But,more importantly, May 7 was surrender democracy day in America when the White House released a directive declaring that in the event of a nationalemergency(as defined by only the President)that all power of the Federal and all local governments would be in the hands of the President. The President would control the entire government, not just the executive branch. Under a crisis as defined by only him, he would be a Dictator holding all power in the country.
Why do you suppose the White House thinks we need this? I'm not making this up, this directive was released by the White House, not by moveon.org.
Can there be any more debate that the President sees himself as being above the law and not beholding to the Constitution or any checks and balances?
This isn't about Democrats vs. Republicans, it's about Democracy vs. Dictatorship.
You all our worried about the terrorists coming here and establishing Sharia law. The White House has just released its own Sharia law. Look it up, the Presidential national Directive announced on May 7,2007. - Reply to this comment

So many are dying because these cowards can only fight by dressing up like women, strapping explosives on themselves, and blowing themselves (and our troops) up. Real manly, wouldn't you say?
I'm no longer in favor of being in Iraq, so I am not defending our being there.....I am only speaking to the troop training level. Many good, highly trained service men have died theu no fault of their own. - Reply to this comment
- WOW! look how fast CBS (Corrupt Broadcasting Station) is moving this story out of the headlines....... really sad. Please take in this information which is "hidden" for the most part by CBS:
Take a look at yesterday's CBS News/New York Times poll. Yes, 63% of those surveyed (including 81% of Dems and 61% of Independents) said the United States should set a "timeline for withdrawal" in 2008.
But the following question asked whether Congress should block all funding of the troops, allow funding for the troops without conditions, or pursue a middle course that allows funding on the condition that the United States "sets benchmarks for progress and the Iraqi government are meeting those goals" - which is exactly what last night's bill did. Phrased that way, 69% of those surveyed were in favor of funding with benchmarks (including 73% of Democrats and 69% of Independents).
Look at it another way. Clinton, Obama, and Dodd just placed themselves on the short end of an 80-14 vote. And of the eleven who joined them in voting against the bill, three were Republicans (Burr, Coburn, and Enzi) who did so out of principle against pork. That leaves the three Democratic presidential hopefuls standing next to Russ Feingold, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Pat Leahy, Barbara Boxer, Sheldon Whitehouse, Ron Wyden, and socialist Bernie Sanders.
There you have it 69% of Americans APPROVE of the bill that was pasted last night......propaganda works in strange ways doesn't it????? - Reply to this comment

- Wow! CBS and the rest of the media are really pushing Monica Goodlings testimony out of sight really quick. I know this article isn't about her but I can't comment anywhere else.
However, it does tie into what's being said about 2008 because, as she testified, attorneygate is all about suppressing Democratic votes to keep the Republicans in power.
The best way to get us out of Iraq is to go after the so-called vote caging operation and put all involved in jail for a very long time.
As the Rove e-mails discovered going to the wrong address have shown, Rove's buddy Tim Griffith(appointed to replace the fired Arkansas prosecutor) was indeed suppressing votes as Goodling testified(corroberating evidence to bolster her testimony).
Do you know whose votes they were suppressing? African-American Iraq vets in theater and homeless shelter residents. So much for supporting the troops.
They did this in 2004. The plan is to get rid of the prosecutors who won't play ball before the 2008 election.
Let's not let the press or the House & Senate Judiciary Committees drop the ball on this one. - Reply to this comment
- "Mr. Bush said he would have preferred less domestic spending than the bill contained."
Because, God forbid, some money goes to helping the people who voted him into office or the country he leads.
And they didn't pass the measure requiring better training for the troops? And we wonder why so many are dying... - Reply to this comment
