Comments on: Defiant Dems Weigh Revised Iraq Bill
Legislation Cutting Off Funding If Iraqis Fail To Meet Benchmarks Would Be A Direct Challenge To President

Ya processor, those republicans had a good thing going there. - Reply to this comment
- It really amazes me that some folks here would really be bothered by the domestic spending that was proposed in the vetoed bill. There was money for Katrina victims....it's been 2 yrs and New Orleans seems to be stuck in the mud literally. Since when did Americans not want to help out other Americans in need? Granted, there was arguably some pork in the bill but compared to the pork feast the republicans had, I would think twice about calling the "kettle black". I suppose there are those Americans who would want us to continue to spends hundreds of billions of dollars on the Iraq war at the cost of no funding for health care and education for Americans. I wonder what kind of patriots are those? The same ones who won't spend real money on homeland security...instead they sport their yellow ribbons and drive their SUVs happily insulated from reality.

- The original strategy for ending our involvement in Iraq as I understood it was to give the Iraqis and the President until the fall to both prepare logistically and diplomatically for our redeployment.
That is the strategy that I think has the best chance of getting us out of this quagmire and also involving the Syrians and Saudis in a way that will limit the further loss of life on all sides that will accompany our departure.
Bush has finally begun a dialogue with Syria and is trying with Iran. Iran isn't biting because they already have effective control of the government and won't be as impacted by refugees since their fellow Shiites are now in control.
I believe Syria and Saudi Arabia can be convinced to assist in the protection of their fellow Sunnis after we leave and Turkey can be pressured into keeping their hands off the Kurdish territories since they want entrance into the EU.
It's possible that this kind of diplomacy can bear fruit in 5-6 months but is not logistically possible by July.
The surge won't be fully operational before July. If we pull out that quickly we will not only waste the diplomatic initiative that we've called on Bush to engage in but will have the kind of security fiasco for the troops and civilians like we had in Vietnam.
I think it's worth 3 more months to get it right. - Reply to this comment
- Hello, Democrats.....THE PRESIDENT WILL VETO ANY SPENDING BILL THAT INCLUDES A TIMETABLE FOR TROOPS WITHDRAWLS......Get it through your dense heads! Quit using this as a partisan political tool. Pass a spending bill WITHOUT any timetables (and $billions in pork barrel spending, by the way) and then tackle the issue of getting our troops out of there. Quit giving the terrorists the "warm fuzzies" and tell the troops, in no uncertain terms, that you are going to continue funding them while they're there.

Yes through July, include the MRAPs, VA, Walter Reed and Minimum wage too. Disallow retasking by the Defense Department for MRAPs, VA and Walter Reed.- Reply to this comment
Earlier today, I read someplace, don't remember where that, Al-Maliki and the Iraq government want to take a 2-month summer recess.
Heck, we can send them to Crawford, TX ... where they can join Dumbya on his usual summer vacation.
Of course George will have to ramp-up security in the cafeteria.- Reply to this comment

Wow bellaL, your suddenly bothered by pork? You didn't make a peep about it when Bush and the GOP were running record deficits.
By the way, most of the pork was a bribe to get as many Republicans on board as posssible. You know pork is a staple of the GOP diet.- Reply to this comment
- Let me see the GOP has put so much pork in the bills that this moron president singed in the past and now someone is asking that question. My god wake up and open your eyes, they lied stoled and did other horrible things and you want to talk about how little. Give it a rest wing nut.

- White House spokeswoman Dana Perino immediately shot down Clinton's proposal as a nonstarter, adding that such a bold suggestion was %u201Ctroubling%u201D in light of ongoing negotiations.
Perino can shoot down what she likes, but since she is not in Congress and does not control the agenda and it could be an up or down vote and Bush cannot veto it--it could be the Republican death knell and all she, Bush and co can do is ****, moan and whine about it--but if the Democrats stick together--they cannot stop it. - Reply to this comment
- Democratic Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., and Robert Byrd of West Virginia proposed Thursday a measure to repeal the 2002 resolution authorizing force in Iraq. Under the bill, Bush would be required in October to seek Congress' blessing to continue operations in Iraq.
%u201CIf the president will not bring himself to accept reality, it is time for Congress to bring reality to him,%u201D said Clinton, a presidential contender for 2008.
great idea--then with the Democratic majority in the House and Senate--the President would face no authority to have the war--but also could not keep doing a lot that he has under the umbrella of a war time President. Why, Hilary, I am pleasantly surprised that you came up with this!! LOL - Reply to this comment
- Did the revised bill eliminate the $22Billion in pork and earmarks?
